What is SigLIP 2
SigLIP 2 is an advanced multilingual vision-language model proposed by Google DeepMind. It is an upgraded version of SigLIP that improves the alignment between images and text. Through improved training methods and architecture, it significantly enhances the model's performance in tasks such as multilingual understanding, zero-shot classification, and image-text retrieval. SigLIP 2 can process text input in multiple languages and accurately match it with images. It introduces self-supervised learning techniques, such as masked prediction and self-distillation, to further optimize the model's feature extraction capability. SigLIP 2 provides two variants:FixRes(fixed resolution) and NaFlex(supporting multiple resolutions and aspect ratios), which can adapt to image inputs of different resolutions.

Main features of SigLIP 2
- Multilingual support: SigLIP 2 can process multiple languages and provides powerful multilingual vision-language encoding capabilities, making it suitable for tasks in different languages and cultural backgrounds.
- Zero-shot classification: Without fine-tuning for a specific task, SigLIP 2 can directly classify new categories.
- Image-text retrieval: It supports image-to-text retrieval as well as text-to-image retrieval, and can quickly find the corresponding item that best matches the input content.
- Providing visual capabilities for large language models: SigLIP 2 can serve as a visual module to provide image understanding capabilities for other language models.
- Efficient training and optimization: It uses the Sigmoid loss function, which solves the storage and computation bottlenecks of traditional contrastive learning methods (such as CLIP's InfoNCE loss) and improves training efficiency.
Technical principles of SigLIP 2
- Sigmoid loss function: SigLIP 2 uses the Sigmoid loss function to replace traditional contrastive loss functions (such as CLIP's InfoNCE loss). It can learn global and local features in a more balanced way, avoiding the computational bottlenecks common in contrastive learning.
- Self-supervised learning and decoder pretraining: SigLIP 2 combines image caption pretraining and self-supervised learning methods, such as self-distillation and masked prediction. Through decoder pretraining, the model can better understand image regions and their corresponding text descriptions, improving its ability to capture fine-grained details.
- Dynamic resolution support: SigLIP 2 introduces the NaFlex variant, which supports multiple resolutions and original aspect ratios. It can preserve the spatial information of images and is suitable for resolution-sensitive tasks such as document understanding or OCR.
- Multilingual support and debiasing techniques: SigLIP 2 uses multilingual datasets during training and reduces unfair gender or cultural biases through debiasing techniques. This makes the model's performance in multilingual tasks fairer and more accurate.
- Combination of global and local features: Through Global-Local Loss and Masked Prediction Loss, SigLIP 2 can simultaneously focus on global semantics and local details, performing better in dense prediction tasks such as semantic segmentation and depth estimation.
- Backward compatibility: SigLIP 2 is based on the Vision Transformer architecture and maintains compatibility with earlier versions. Users can seamlessly replace model weights without refactoring the entire system.

Application scenarios of SigLIP 2
- Multilingual image classification: SigLIP 2 supports zero-shot classification tasks in multiple languages, and can recognize and classify images cross-lingually. Users can upload an image, and the model can recognize that the image belongs to the "animal" category.
- Visual Question Answering (VQA): Combined with a language model, SigLIP 2 can handle visual question answering tasks and provide users with natural language answers based on image content.
- Document Understanding: SigLIP 2 supports multi-resolution and aspect-ratio-preserving features, making it suitable for document image processing, such as OCR and document content understanding.
- Open-Vocabulary Segmentation and Detection: In semantic segmentation and object detection tasks, SigLIP 2 can handle unseen categories and is suitable for visual tasks in dynamic environments.
