What is SearchAgent-X
SearchAgent-X is an efficient reasoning framework introduced by researchers from Nankai University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), capable of improving the efficiency of search Agents based on large language models (LLMs). Based on high-recall approximate retrieval and two key technologies, priority-aware scheduling and non-stall retrieval, it significantly improves system throughput (1.3 to 3.4 times) and reduces latency (to 1/1.7 to 1/5 of the original), without sacrificing generation quality. The framework addresses the two major efficiency bottlenecks of retrieval accuracy and latency, optimizes resource utilization, and provides an important reference for the practical deployment of complex AI Agents.
Main Features of SearchAgent-X
- Significantly Improved Throughput: SearchAgent-X can achieve a 1.3 to 3.4 times throughput improvement, significantly enhancing the system's processing capacity.
- Greatly Reduced Latency: Reduces latency to 1/1.7 to 1/5 of the original, ensuring rapid response.
- Maintained Generation Quality: While improving efficiency, it does not sacrifice the quality of generated answers, ensuring the system's practicality and reliability.
- Dynamic Interaction Optimization: Efficiently handles complex multi-step reasoning tasks and supports flexible retrieval and reasoning interaction.
Technical Principles of SearchAgent-X
- Priority-Aware Scheduling: Dynamically orders concurrent requests based on their real-time status (such as the number of completed retrievals, the context length of the current sequence, and the waiting time of the request). By prioritizing high-value computation tasks, it reduces unnecessary waiting and repeated computation, and significantly improves KV-cache utilization.
- Non-Stall Retrieval: Monitors the maturity of retrieval results and the readiness of the LLM engine, and adaptively terminates retrieval tasks early. It avoids unnecessary waiting in retrieval tasks, ensures that the generation process can proceed in a timely manner, and significantly reduces end-to-end latency.
- High-Recall Approximate Retrieval: Uses a high-recall approximate retrieval method to avoid the negative impact of excessively high or low retrieval accuracy on system efficiency. Based on a reasonable retrieval range setting, it ensures that the retrieval process efficiently supports high-quality reasoning.
