What is REEF

REEF (Representation Encoding Fingerprints) is a fingerprinting technology for large language models (LLMs). By embedding specific encoding information during model training, it generates a unique "fingerprint" for each model. This "fingerprint" contains the model's basic characteristics and its evolution across different stages. REEF technology features high accuracy, low overhead, robustness, and compatibility. It enables high-accuracy identification of models without degrading model performance, and even if a model has undergone multiple modifications or merges, its "fingerprint" can still be accurately identified.

REEF's main functions

  • Model fingerprinting: REEF technology creates unique "fingerprints" for large language models (LLMs), enabling the identification and differentiation of different large models. Even if these models have undergone pruning or merging, they can still be accurately identified.
  • Copyright protection: REEF technology effectively prevents models from being "wrapped" or disguised, protects model copyright, prevents unauthorized use and tampering, and provides strong support for model copyright protection.
  • High-accuracy identification: REEF technology can achieve high-accuracy identification of models without degrading model performance. Even if a model has undergone multiple modifications or merges, its "fingerprint" can still be accurately identified.
  • Low overhead: REEF technology's implementation does not significantly increase the model's computational and storage costs, and it can be widely applied to models of various scales.
  • Compatibility: REEF technology can seamlessly integrate with existing large language models without requiring major adjustments to the model structure.
  • Combating illegal behavior: REEF technology provides a new means of addressing large model infringement issues and combating unauthorized model copying, modification, or merging.

REEF's technical principles

  • Feature representation extraction: The REEF system first extracts key features from the internal structure of a large language model (LLM). These features can reflect the model's unique attributes.
  • Encoding vector generation: The extracted features are then encoded into a compact vector, namely the "fingerprint." This "fingerprint" contains the model's basic information and can reflect the model's performance characteristics on different tasks.
  • Hash function encoding: The REEF system uses a hash function-based encoding method to convert the feature vector into a fixed-length binary string, reducing storage space and improving identification speed.
  • Noise robustness mechanism: The REEF system introduces a noise robustness mechanism, so that even if the model has undergone pruning or merging, the consistency of the "fingerprint" can be maintained.
  • Centered Kernel Alignment similarity (CKA): The REEF system compares the CKA similarity of the feature representations of the suspect model and the victim model on the same samples. CKA is a similarity metric based on the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC), used to measure the independence between two sets of random variables.
  • Training-free method: REEF is a training-free method, which means it will not harm the model's overall performance or increase additional training costs.
  • Robustness: REEF is resilient to various subsequent model development techniques, including fine-tuning, pruning, merging, permutation, and scaling transformations. Even after extensive fine-tuning or pruning of a model, REEF can still effectively identify the victim model.
