What is ReasonIR-8B
ReasonIR-8B is a model introduced by Meta AI designed specifically for reasoning-intensive retrieval tasks. Trained based on LLaMA3.1-8B, it adopts a dual-encoder architecture, encoding queries and documents separately into embedding vectors and scoring them by cosine similarity. The model combines the innovative data generation tool ReasonIR-SYNTHESIZER to construct synthetic query-document pairs that simulate real reasoning challenges, effectively improving its ability to handle long contexts and abstract problems.
ReasonIR-8B's main features
- Complex query processing: ReasonIR-8B adopts a dual-encoder architecture, encoding queries and documents separately into embedding vectors and scoring them by cosine similarity, and can effectively handle long and cross-domain complex queries. The training data includes diverse-length queries (VL Queries) up to 2000 tokens long and hard queries (HQ) that require logical reasoning, significantly improving the model's ability to handle long contexts and abstract problems.
- Improved reasoning accuracy: On the BRIGHT benchmark, ReasonIR-8B achieved an original query score of 24.4 nDCG@10, which increased to 36.9 when combined with Qwen2.5 reranking, far surpassing the larger Rank1-32B model, with only 1/200 of the latter's computational cost. In addition, in RAG tasks such as MMLU and GPQA, the model brought significant improvements of 6.4% and 22.6%, respectively.
- Synthetic data generation: ReasonIR-8B combines the innovative data generation tool ReasonIR-SYNTHESIZER to construct synthetic query-document pairs that simulate real reasoning challenges, supporting complex tasks more precisely. Through multi-turn prompting, it constructs "hard negatives", differing from traditional lexical-matching-based negative sampling methods.
ReasonIR-8B's technical principles
- Dual-encoder architecture: ReasonIR-8B adopts a dual-encoder architecture, encoding queries and documents independently into embedding vectors and scoring them by cosine similarity. It can effectively handle long and complex queries, supporting diverse-length queries (VL Queries) up to 2000 tokens long as well as hard queries (HQ) that require logical reasoning.
- Varied-Length Data (VL): Generates queries of different lengths and their corresponding synthetic documents, extending the retriever's effective context length.
- Hard Query Data (HQ): Generates reasoning-intensive queries based on high-quality documents, and generates "hard negatives" through a multi-turn method.
- Public Data: Combines existing public datasets (such as MS MARCO and Natural Questions) to provide diverse training data.
- Contrastive learning: Through a contrastive learning objective, the retriever is optimized to embed queries into a vector space closer to relevant documents while moving away from irrelevant documents. This contrastive learning method, combined with mixed training on synthetic data and public data, significantly improves the model's performance on reasoning-intensive tasks.
- Test-time optimization: ReasonIR-8B further improves performance at test time in the following ways:
- Query rewriting: Uses a language model to rewrite the original query into a longer, more detailed and informative query, improving retrieval quality.
- LLM reranker: Combines a language model to rerank retrieval results, further improving retrieval accuracy and relevance.
