What is RAG-Anything

RAG-Anything is an open-source multimodal RAG system launched by the Data Intelligence Lab at the University of Hong Kong. The system supports processing complex documents containing text, images, tables, and formulas, and provides an end-to-end solution from document ingestion to intelligent querying. Based on a multimodal knowledge graph, a flexible parsing architecture, and a hybrid retrieval mechanism, the system significantly improves complex document processing capabilities and supports multiple document formats, such as PDF, Office documents, images, and text files. The core advantages of RAG-Anything include an end-to-end multimodal pipeline, multi-format document support, a multimodal content analysis engine, knowledge graph indexing, a flexible processing architecture, and a cross-modal retrieval mechanism.

RAG-Anything

Main features of RAG-Anything

  • End-to-end multimodal pipeline: Provides an integrated workflow from document parsing to multimodal intelligent querying.
  • Multi-format document support: Compatible with PDF, Office documents (DOC/DOCX, PPT/PPTX, XLS/XLSX), images (JPG, PNG, etc.), and text files (TXT, MD).
  • Multimodal content analysis engine: Deploys dedicated processors for images, tables, formulas, and general text content to ensure accurate parsing of various types of content.
  • Knowledge graph indexing: Automatically extracts entities and cross-modal relationships to build a semantic connection network.
  • Flexible processing architecture: Supports MinerU intelligent parsing mode and direct multimodal content insertion mode, adapting to diverse scenarios.
  • Cross-modal retrieval mechanism: Enables intelligent retrieval across text and multimodal content, providing precise information localization and matching capabilities.

Technical principles of RAG-Anything

  • Graph-enhanced text indexing: Based on an LLM, extracts entities (nodes) and their relationships (edges) from text, and uses the information to build a knowledge graph. Generates text key-value pairs for each entity node and relationship edge, where the key is a word or phrase used for efficient retrieval, and the value is a text passage summarizing the relevant external data fragment. Identifies and merges identical entities and relationships from different text fragments, reducing the overhead of graph operations and improving data processing efficiency.
  • Dual-level retrieval paradigm:
    • Low-level retrieval: Focuses on retrieving specific entities and their attributes or relationships, suitable for detailed queries requiring precise information.
    • High-level retrieval: Handles broader topics and themes, providing insights into high-level concepts and summaries based on aggregating information from multiple related entities and relationships.
    • Graph and vector integration: Combines graph structures and vector representations; the retrieval algorithm uses local and global keywords to improve retrieval efficiency and result relevance.
  • Retrieval-augmented answer generation: Uses retrieved information to generate answers based on the collected data via an LLM, including the names, descriptions, and original text fragments of entities and relationships. Unifies the query with multi-source text, and the LLM generates answers consistent with user needs, ensuring alignment with query intent.
  • Complexity analysis: In the graph-based indexing stage, an LLM is used to extract entities and relationships from each text chunk without additional overhead, efficiently managing new text updates. In the graph-based retrieval stage, an LLM is used to generate relevant keywords, relying on vector search for retrieval, significantly reducing retrieval overhead.
