On May 15, 2024, according to the Financial Times, the London, UK-based AI call center customer service assistant startupPolyAIhas completed a new round of funding of $50 million, with a valuation of nearly $500 million. This round of funding was led by the Hedosophia group operated by investor Ian Osborne and NVentures, the venture capital arm of chip giant Nvidia, with existing investors Khosla Ventures and Steve Cohen's Point72 Ventures also participating in this round.

PolyAI plans to use the raised funds to address the call center staff shortage by developing customer support AI assistants capable of guiding customers through complex inquiries via conversation. Company CEO and co-founder Nikola Mrkšić said they hope to make people love voice assistants, because phone calls remain the primary way people interact with businesses. In addition, the company plans to expand its business and expects its revenue in 2024 to be triple that of 2023.

PolyAI was founded in 2017 by Nikola Mrkšić, Tsung-Hsien Wen, and Pei-Hao Su, who met at the University of Cambridge Dialogue Systems Group (part of the Machine Intelligence Lab). The company uses its own proprietary large language models as well as technology from ChatGPT maker OpenAI to provide AI voice customer service assistants for call centers, with clients including utility companies, logistics companies, and banks. A major challenge facing PolyAI is how to overcome consumer dissatisfaction with attempts at automated customer support.
