What is Pippo
Pippo is an image-to-video generationmodel launched by Meta Reality Labs, capable of generating 1K resolution multi-view high-definition portrait videos from a single photo. The model is based on a multi-view diffusion transformer, pre-trained on 3 billion portrait images and post-trained on 2,500 studio-captured images. Pippo's core technologies include the ControlMLP module, used to inject pixel-aligned conditions, and attention bias technology, which can generate more than 5 times the number of views during inference than during training. Pippo introduces re-projection error to evaluate the 3D consistency of multi-view generation.
Pippo's main features
- Multi-view generation: Pippo can generate multi-view high-definition videos from a single full-body or facial photo, supporting full-body, facial, or head generation.
- Efficient content generation: Through the multi-view diffusion transformer, Pippo can generate video content with up to 5 times the training views.
- High-resolution support: Pippo is the first to achieve consistent multi-view portrait generation at 1K resolution.
- Spatial anchors and ControlMLP: The ControlMLP module injects pixel-aligned conditions, such as Plücker rays and spatial anchors, to achieve better 3D consistency.
- Automatic detail completion: When processing monocular video, Pippo can automatically complete missing details, such as shoes, face, or neck, etc.
Pippo's technical principles
- Multi-stage training strategy:
- Pre-training stage: Pippo is first pre-trained on 3 billion unstructured portrait images, which have no annotation information.
- Intermediate training stage: On a high-quality studio dataset, the model jointly generates images from multiple views, using low-resolution views for denoising and roughly encoding the target camera through a shallow MLP.
- Post-training stage: At high resolution, a small number of views are denoised, and pixel-aligned controls (such as spatial anchors and Plücker rays) are introduced to achieve 3D consistency.
- Pixel-aligned control (ControlMLP module): Pippo injects pixel-aligned conditions through the ControlMLP module, such as Plücker rays and spatial anchors. These conditions are used during training and fixed to arbitrary positions during inference.
- Attention bias technology: During inference, Pippo proposes attention bias technology, enabling the model to simultaneously generate more than 5 times the views of the training stage.
- 3D consistency evaluation metric: Pippo introduces an improved 3D consistency evaluation metric—Re-projection Error—to evaluate the 3D consistency of multi-view generation.

Pippo's application scenarios
- Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR): Pippo can generate high-quality multi-view portrait videos, which can be directly used for virtual character generation in VR and AR environments, enhancing immersion.
- Film and television production: In film and television post-production, Pippo can be used to quickly generate multi-view special effects shots, reducing shooting costs and time.
- Video conferencing: By generating multi-view videos from a single photo, Pippo can provide remote participants with a more natural interactive experience in video conferencing.
- Game Development: Pippo can be used to generate character animations in games, enhancing the visual effects of games and players' sense of immersion.
- Social Media and Content Creation: Creators can use Pippo to generate multi-view videos, providing richer content for social media platforms.
