What is PaliGemma 2
PaliGemma 2 is a new-generation vision-language model (VLM) released by Google DeepMind based on the Gemma 2 language model family, as an upgraded version of the PaliGemma model. Combining the SigLIP-So400m vision encoder with Gemma 2 models of different sizes, it supports multiple resolutions and, based on multi-stage training, has broad knowledge transfer capabilities. PaliGemma 2 performs excellently on a variety of academic tasks, especially with significant performance under large model and high-resolution configurations, while also achieving breakthroughs in new areas such as OCR, music score recognition, and medical image report generation.
Main features of PaliGemma 2
- Multi-scale image processing: Supports image inputs at different resolutions (224px², 448px², 896px²), adapting to the needs of various visual tasks.
- Broad transfer learning: Based on fine-tuning pretrained models, PaliGemma 2 can transfer to more than 30 different academic tasks, including image captioning, visual question answering (VQA), and more.
- Multimodal task processing: Combines image and text information to perform multimodal tasks such as image caption generation and visual reasoning.
- OCR-related tasks: Includes table structure recognition, molecular structure recognition, music score recognition, and more.
- Long fine-grained description generation: Can generate long image descriptions containing rich details.
- Medical image understanding: Performs excellently on medical image understanding tasks such as radiology report generation.
Technical principles of PaliGemma 2
- Model architecture: PaliGemma 2 is based on the language models of the Gemma 2 family and combines the SigLIP-So400m vision encoder. The vision encoder converts images into embedding representations, which are mapped to the input space of Gemma 2 via linear projection.
- Multi-stage training:
- First stage: Jointly pretrains the vision encoder and Gemma 2 model using a large number of multimodal task samples.
- Second stage: Further trains at higher resolutions, increasing the weight of tasks that benefit from high resolution.
- Third stage: Fine-tunes for specific tasks to optimize model performance.
- Autoregressive sampling: Uses the Gemma 2 language model to autoregressively sample predictions from text prompts, generating the required output sequence.
- Parameter optimization: Adjusts the learning rate according to different model sizes to optimize transfer learning performance.
- Computational efficiency: Controls computational cost based on optimizing view tokens in the LLM.
- Quantization and CPU inference: Supports 8-bit switch floating-point quantization, enabling the model to run efficiently on CPU.
