On March 27, 2024, the London, UK-based AI data center Oriole Networks announced that it has raised €11.6 million in seed funding. The funding round was co-led by UCL Technology Fund, Clean Growth Fund, XTX Ventures and Dorilton Ventures.

The company plans to use the raised funds to improve the performance and adoption of artificial intelligence.

Oriole Networks was founded in 2023 by University College London scientists Professor George Zervas, Alessandro Ottino and Joshua Benjamin, along with experienced CEO James Regan. The company has developed a novel method of using light to connect thousands of AI chips together. Through this method, the capabilities of each individual graphics processing unit (GPU) are combined to form a "superbrain" that can be used to train advanced large language models a hundred times faster, with only one-thousandth the latency, while consuming very little energy.
