What is OpenSandbox
OpenSandbox is a general-purpose AI application sandbox platform open-sourced by Alibaba under the Apache 2.0 license, designed specifically for securely executing AI-generated code and automated tasks. It provides multilingual SDKs (Python, Java/Kotlin, JavaScript/TypeScript) and a unified sandbox API, with built-in Docker and Kubernetes runtime support, enabling rapid deployment of various isolated execution environments such as code interpreters, browser automation, and desktop environments (VNC/VS Code). OpenSandbox primarily addresses the security isolation problem when AI Agents (such as Claude Code and Gemini CLI) execute arbitrary code. Through fine-grained network policy control and resource isolation, developers can safely run LLM-generated code, third-party plugins, or automation scripts in a controlled environment while maintaining context persistence and efficient task scheduling capabilities.
Main Features of OpenSandbox
-
Multilingual SDK Support: Provides client SDKs in Python, Java/Kotlin, and JavaScript/TypeScript, designed with a unified API for developers to quickly integrate into various AI applications.
-
Code Interpreter: Built-in Code Interpreter functionality supports secure execution of code in multiple languages such as Python and JavaScript, with persistent context capability to continuously execute multiple code segments while retaining state.
-
Browser Automation: Supports mainstream browser automation scenarios such as Chrome and Playwright, suitable for tasks including web data collection, automated testing, and RPA.
-
Desktop Environment Sandbox: Provides VNC remote desktop and VS Code online development environments, supporting isolated execution of GUI applications and complex interactive tasks.
-
Network Policy Control: Implements multiple routing strategies through a unified ingress gateway, supporting fine-grained control of egress traffic at the sandbox granularity to ensure network security of execution environments.
-
Multi-Runtime Support: Built-in Docker and Kubernetes runtimes support both rapid local startup of a single sandbox and large-scale distributed sandbox cluster scheduling.
-
MCP Protocol Integration: Provides
opensandbox-mcp-server, supporting invocation of sandbox capabilities via Model Context Protocol, enabling seamless integration into AI tools such as Cursor and Claude Desktop. -
Resource Isolation and Limits: Supports isolation and quota limits for resources such as CPU, memory, disk, and network to prevent malicious or abnormal code from affecting the host machine.
-
Unified Sandbox API: Provides standardized sandbox lifecycle management interfaces, including operations such as creation, execution, monitoring, and destruction, simplifying multi-environment adaptation costs.
Technical Principles of OpenSandbox
-
Containerized Isolation: Builds lightweight sandbox containers based on Docker and Kubernetes, using Linux Namespace and Cgroups to achieve isolation of processes, networks, and file systems, ensuring AI-generated code runs in a restricted environment.
-
Unified Sandbox Runtime: Designs an abstract runtime interface layer that supports local single-node Docker operation and distributed Kubernetes cluster scheduling, shielding underlying differences through a unified API.
-
Ingress Gateway Architecture: Uses a unified ingress gateway to handle all sandbox traffic, supports configuration of multiple routing strategies, and enables network egress control and traffic auditing at the sandbox granularity.
-
Multilingual SDK Encapsulation: Encapsulates the underlying sandbox capabilities through gRPC/HTTP protocols, providing idiomatic client SDKs for Python, Java/Kotlin, and JavaScript/TypeScript, lowering the integration barrier.
-
Persistent Context Mechanism: The code interpreter maintains code execution state and environment variables by mounting persistent storage volumes, supporting continuous code execution across multiple rounds of conversation.
-
Resource Quota Management: Integrates Kubernetes ResourceQuota and LimitRange to impose hard limits on the sandbox's CPU, memory, disk, and network bandwidth, preventing resource exhaustion attacks.
-
Security Policy Engine: Built-in configurations for Linux security modules such as Seccomp and AppArmor restrict the system call permissions of processes within the sandbox, minimizing the attack surface.
-
MCP Protocol Adaptation: Implements a Model Context Protocol server, exposing sandbox capabilities as standardized tool interfaces, enabling LLMs to invoke functions such as code execution and browser operations through a structured protocol.
-
Layered Image Building: Adopts a layered image design, where the base image provides the runtime environment and the application image stacks business dependencies, supporting fast startup and elastic scaling.
