What is MT-MegatronLM
MT-MegatronLM is an open-source hybrid parallel training framework for full-featured GPUs launched by Moore Threads, mainly used for efficiently training large-scale language models. It supports training of dense models, multimodal models, and MoE (Mixture of Experts) models. The framework supports FP8 mixed precision strategies, high-performance operator libraries, and collective communication libraries based on full-featured GPUs, significantly improving the compute utilization of GPU clusters. Through technologies such as model parallelism, data parallelism, and pipeline parallelism, it achieves efficient distributed training and supports mixed precision training to reduce memory usage and accelerate computation.
Main Features of MT-MegatronLM

- Multimodal Models: Can handle models that include multiple modalities of data such as text and images.
- Mixture of Experts Models (MoE Models): Supports sparsely activated mixture of experts architectures, improving model flexibility and efficiency.
- Efficient Hybrid Parallel Training
- Model Parallelism: Distributes model parameters across multiple GPUs, breaking through single-GPU memory limits.
- Data Parallelism: Accelerates the training process by distributing data across multiple GPUs.
- Pipeline Parallelism: Divides the model into multiple stages and improves throughput in a pipeline manner.
- High-Performance Optimization: Supports FP8 mixed precision strategies, reducing memory usage and accelerating computation. Integrates high-performance operator libraries (such as muDNN) to improve computational efficiency. Uses optimized collective communication libraries (such as MCCL) to reduce communication overhead.
- Flexible Scalability: Supports training from small to ultra-large-scale models, adapting to different hardware configurations. : Optimizes parallel training of multi-GPU clusters, improving cluster utilization.
Technical Principles of MT-MegatronLM
- Hybrid Parallel Strategy: Splits model parameters by dimension and distributes them across multiple GPUs, reducing per-GPU memory usage. Divides the model into multiple stages, assigns them to different GPUs, and improves throughput through micro-batch passing. Divides the dataset across different GPUs, executes the same model, and aggregates gradients through All-Reduce.
- Mixed Precision Training: Uses technologies such as AMP or BF16, employing low-precision computation in forward and backward propagation while using high precision on critical paths to maintain numerical stability.
- Efficient Optimizers and Gradient Aggregation: Provides a fused Adam optimizer, combined with technologies such as ZeRO or 1-bit Adam, reducing communication overhead and saving memory. Uses operations such as All-Reduce to aggregate gradients, ensuring global gradient consistency.
- High-Performance Operator Libraries: Such as muDNN, optimized for GPUs to improve computational efficiency.
- Collective Communication Libraries: Such as MCCL, optimizing inter-GPU communication and reducing communication overhead.
