What is Maya1
Maya1 is an open-source model released by the Maya Research teamAI speech synthesismodel, designed specifically for generating emotionally rich speech. The model designs voices through natural language descriptions, supports more than 20 emotional expressions such as laughing, crying, and sighing, and can stream audio in real time. The model is based on a 3-billion-parameter Transformer architecture and on the SNAC neural codec, with audio output at 24kHz, delivering high quality and low latency. It is suitable for many scenarios such as game voiceovers, podcast production, and voice assistant development, making AI voices more human-like and expressive.
Maya1's main features
-
Natural language voice design: Users can define voice characteristics through simple natural language descriptions (such as "30-year-old American woman, gentle voice, sincere tone") without complex parameter tuning.
-
Rich emotional expression: Supports more than 20 emotions, such as laughing (laugh), crying (cry), sighing (sigh), etc., and can precisely control emotional expression through emotion tags in the text (such as
<laugh>). -
Real-time streaming: Uses the SNAC neural codec to support low-latency (about 100 milliseconds) real-time audio generation, suitable for scenarios requiring immediate feedback such as voice assistants and game dialogue.
-
Efficient deployment: Based on a lightweight 3-billion-parameter Transformer architecture, it can run on a single GPU and supports the vLLM inference framework, making it suitable for high-concurrency scenarios.
Maya1's technical principles
-
Architecture: Maya1 is based on a 3-billion-parameter Transformer (similar to Llama) architecture, used to generate the audio token sequence of the SNAC codec, rather than directly generating waveforms.
-
SNAC codec: Through multi-scale hierarchical compression (about 12Hz/23Hz/47Hz), audio is efficiently encoded into 7-token frames, achieving high-quality audio output at a low bitrate (about 0.98kbps).
-
Training process: Pretraininguses large-scale English speech data, covering multiple accents and speaking rates.Based on studio-grade speech samples, annotated with more than 20 emotion and identity tags.
-
Voice description: Uses XML attribute-style natural language descriptions (such as
<description="...">), preventing the model from "reading out" the description content. -
Inference optimization: Supports integration with the vLLM engine and, combined with an automatic prefix caching (APC) mechanism, significantly reduces the computational cost of repeated generation, while also being compatible with WebAudio ring buffers for convenient real-time playback on the browser side.

Maya1's application scenarios
-
Game development: Generates emotional dialogue for game characters, enhancing immersion, for example, letting NPCs have a cold laugh or angry emotion in dialogue.
-
Podcasts and audiobooks: Automatic voiceover, supporting multi-character dialogue and emotional expression, without the need for professional voice actors, enhancing content appeal.
-
AI voice assistants: Creates natural, emotionally rich voice interaction experiences, allowing assistants to express emotions such as sympathy and joy when responding.
-
Short video creation: Quickly generates emotional narration, improving the expressiveness of videos and the audience's immersion.
-
Accessibility applications: Make screen readers more humanized, using a warm, natural voice to help visually impaired people better understand content.
