What is LongVILA
LongVILA is a vision-language AI model for long video understanding, jointly developed by NVIDIA, MIT, UC Berkeley, and the University of Texas at Austin. Through the co-design of algorithms and systems, it achieves the ability to train with ultra-long context lengths on a large number of GPUs without gradient checkpointing. LongVILA can extend the number of video frames to 1024, significantly improving the score for long video captioning and achieving 99.5% accuracy in large-scale video captioning tasks. It also introduces Multimodal Sequence Parallelism (MM-SP), which greatly improves training efficiency and can seamlessly integrate with Hugging Face Transformers. LongVILA also proposes a five-stage training pipeline, including alignment, pre-training, short supervised fine-tuning, context extension, and long supervised fine-tuning.
Main Features of LongVILA
- Long-context processing capability: Supports video processing of up to 1024 frames and can understand and analyze information in long videos.
- Multimodal Sequence Parallelism (MM-SP): Allows training with a 2M context length on 256 GPUs, greatly improving training efficiency.
- Five-stage training pipeline: Includes alignment, pre-training, short supervised fine-tuning, context extension, and long supervised fine-tuning, ensuring that the model can gradually adapt to and optimize long video understanding.
- Large-scale dataset construction: Developed a large-scale vision-language pre-training dataset and a long video instruction-following dataset to support the model's multi-stage training.
- High-performance inference: The MM-SP system can efficiently process long videos during inference and supports long-context multimodal language deployment.
Technical Principles of LongVILA
- Long-context Multimodal Sequence Parallelism (MM-SP): LongVILA introduces a new sequence parallelism method that allows a large number of frames from long videos to be distributed and processed simultaneously across multiple GPUs, improving training efficiency and scalability.
- Five-stage training pipeline:
- Multimodal alignment: In the first stage of training, the model learns to align visual information with linguistic information.
- Large-scale pre-training: Uses large amounts of data to pre-train the model and learn general multimodal representations.
- Short supervised fine-tuning: Performs fine-tuning on short supervised data to improve the model's ability to understand short video content and generate captions.
- Context extension: Increases the context length that the model can handle through continued pre-training, enabling it to process longer video sequences.
- Long supervised fine-tuning: Performs fine-tuning on long video data to further improve the model's understanding of long video content and the accuracy of caption generation.
- Dataset development: LongVILA provides rich training materials for model training by constructing a large-scale vision-language pre-training dataset and a long video instruction-following dataset.
- Co-design of systems and algorithms: The design of LongVILA takes into account the synergy between algorithms and system software to achieve efficient training and inference.
