What is LMEval
LMEval is an open-source framework launched by Google, used to simplify cross-provider evaluation of large models (LLMs). The framework supports multimodal (text, image, code) and multi-metric evaluation, and is compatible with mainstream model providers such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. LMEval is based on an incremental evaluation engine, running only the necessary tests to save time and computing resources. The framework's self-encrypting SQLite database ensures secure storage of evaluation results. LMEvalboard provides an interactive visualization interface to help users quickly analyze model performance and intuitively compare the strengths and weaknesses of different models.
Main Features of LMEval
- Multi-Provider Compatibility: Supports mainstream model providers such as Google, OpenAI, etc.
- Incremental and Efficient Evaluation: The intelligent evaluation engine runs only the necessary tests, avoiding redundant computations and saving time and resources.
- Multimodal Support: Supports evaluation of multiple modalities such as text, images, and code.
- Multi-Metric Support: Supports a variety of scoring metrics, including boolean questions, multiple choice, free-text generation, etc.
- Secure Storage: Uses a self-encrypting SQLite database to ensure data security.
- Visualization Tool: LMEvalboard provides an interactive visualization interface to help users quickly analyze model performance.
Technical Principles of LMEval
- Multi-Provider Adaptation: Based on the LiteLLM framework, LMEval provides a unified interface to adapt to models from different providers. Based on an abstraction layer, it encapsulates API calls from different providers, so users do not need to worry about underlying implementation details.
- Incremental Evaluation Engine: Uses an incremental evaluation mechanism to run the necessary evaluations for new models, new prompts, or new questions. Based on a caching mechanism, it stores already evaluated results to avoid redundant computations. Multithreading technology accelerates the evaluation process and improves efficiency.
- Visualization Tool: LMEvalboard implements interactive visualization based on web technologies (such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript). It provides various charts (such as radar charts and bar charts) and interactive features to help users intuitively analyze evaluation results.
