What are Large Action Models
Large Action Models (LAMs) are a development framework for large action models introduced by Microsoft, an intelligent system capable of executing real-world actions, and LAMs go beyond the text generation capabilities of traditional LLMs (Large Language Models). LAMs can understand user intent and automatically execute complex tasks in physical and digital environments. LAMs integrate stages such as data collection, model training, environment interaction, and evaluation, transforming language understanding into executable actions, driving AI toward automation with real impact and the direction of enhancing human capabilities. LAMs are regarded as an important step toward achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Main features of Large Action Models
- User intent interpretation: Accurately understand user intent from various input forms (such as natural language, voice, images, etc.), and transform it into executable plans and action steps.
- Action generation: Transform user intent into specific action instructions, including graphical user interface (GUI) operations, API calls, robotic physical operations, etc.
- Dynamic planning and adaptation: Decompose complex tasks into multiple subtasks, dynamically adjust plans and actions according to environmental changes, and respond to unexpected situations during execution.
- Specialization and efficiency: For specific environments or tasks, LAMs are based on specialized training to improve accuracy and adaptability in specific domains, while reducing computational overhead and improving response speed.
- Environment interaction: Integrate with agent systems, interact with external tools, maintain memory, and interface with the environment to achieve real impact on the physical world.
- Autonomous execution: Autonomously execute tasks, including understanding tasks, planning action steps, executing actions, and adjusting based on feedback.
Technical principles of Large Action Models
- Data collection and preparation: Collect data on user requests, environment states, and corresponding actions. The data is cleaned and preprocessed to provide a foundation for model training.
- Model training: Use the collected data, based on techniques such as supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning, to train LAMs to execute specific actions.
- Environment integration: Integrate the trained LAMs into the agent system and interact with the environment, including collecting observation data, using tools, maintaining memory, and implementing feedback loops.
- Foundation building: Ensure that LAMs execute actions and adjust behavior based on real-time feedback and contextual changes, enhancing the ability to complete tasks in specific environments.
- Evaluation: Before actual deployment, conduct rigorous reliability, robustness, and safety evaluations of LAMs to ensure performance in different environments and tasks and effectively handle unexpected situations.
