InstantID is a diffusion model-based image generation technology focused on achieving zero-shot identity-preserving personalized image synthesis. This technology allows users to generate personalized images in multiple styles using only a single facial image, while ensuring high fidelity, similar toPhotoMakerThe design of InstantID aims to address some limitations of existing personalized image synthesis methods in practical applications, such as high storage requirements, lengthy fine-tuning processes, and the need for multiple reference images.

InstantID's features
- Personalized image synthesis: Users can generate personalized images with different poses or styles based on a single facial image, while maintaining high fidelity.
- Identity feature preservation: When generating new images, InstantID can accurately preserve the facial features of the original image, such as expression, age, and identity.
- Style transfer: InstantID can transfer a person's facial features to different artistic styles or backgrounds, for example, integrating realistic facial features into anime-style images.
- Novel view synthesis: Through InstantID, novel view images of the same person can be generated, even if these views are not present in the original image.
- Identity interpolation: InstantID can achieve smooth transitions between different people's features, for example, interpolating facial features between two different people.
- Multi-identity synthesis: In complex scenes, InstantID can simultaneously handle multiple people and generate images containing multiple characters.
- Compatible with pretrained models: As a plugin, InstantID can be seamlessly integrated into popular pretrained text-to-image diffusion models, such as SD1.5 and SDXL, without the need for additional fine-tuning.
InstantID's working principle
InstantID contains three key components: ID embedding, image adapter, and IdentityNet.
- ID embedding: First, InstantID uses a pretrained facial model to extract the identity embedding of the reference facial image, which contains rich semantic information such as identity, age, and gender, thereby preserving the facial details in the generated image.
- Image adapter: InstantID introduces a lightweight image adapter that uses a decoupled cross-attention mechanism to support images as visual prompts. This adapter can take the reference image as conditional input without affecting other model parameters.
- IdentityNet: A specially designed network for encoding the detailed features of the reference facial image and incorporating additional spatial control. IdentityNet guides the image generation process by combining facial features with text prompts, ensuring that the details of facial identity are preserved during generation.
- Training and inference strategy: During training, InstantID only optimizes the parameters of the image adapter and IdentityNet, while keeping the parameters of the pretrained diffusion model unchanged. In this way, even without additional fine-tuning, InstantID can maintain flexibility during inference.
- Generation process: When generating an image, InstantID first uses the ID embedding as a condition, and then, through the guidance of the image adapter and IdentityNet, passes these conditions to the diffusion model, which then generates the image under these conditions.
