What is HealthBench
HealthBench is an open-source medical testing benchmark launched by OpenAI, used to evaluate the performance and safety of large language models (LLMs) in the healthcare field. HealthBench contains 5,000 multi-turn conversations between models and users or medical professionals, evaluated using conversation-specific scoring criteria created by 262 doctors. The conversations cover various health scenarios (such as emergencies, clinical data transformation, global health) and behavioral dimensions (such as accuracy, instruction following, communication). HealthBench can measure the overall performance of models, with subdivided evaluations by theme (such as emergency referrals, global health) and behavioral dimensions (such as clinical accuracy, communication quality), helping to diagnose the specific behavioral performance of different AI models and identify conversation types and performance dimensions that need improvement.
Main features of HealthBench
- Multi-dimensional evaluation: Provides overall scoring, or subdivided evaluations by theme (such as emergency referrals, global health) and behavioral dimensions (such as accuracy, communication quality).
- Measurement of performance and safety: Measures the performance and safety of models in different health tasks, ensuring the reliability and safety of models in high-risk health scenarios.
- Guidance for model improvement: Provides detailed performance analysis, helping developers identify the strengths and weaknesses of models and guiding the direction of model improvement.
- Benchmark testing and comparison: Provides a unified evaluation standard for different models, facilitating comparison and selection of the most suitable models for healthcare scenarios.
- Variant support: Provides two variants, HealthBench Consensus and HealthBench Hard, which respectively evaluate particularly important behavioral dimensions and particularly difficult conversations.
Technical principles of HealthBench
- Scoring criteria (Rubric): Each conversation has corresponding scoring criteria, written by doctors based on the conversation content. The scoring criteria contain multiple specific criteria, each with a corresponding score value (positive or negative), used to evaluate various aspects of the model's response (such as accuracy, completeness, communication quality, etc.).
- Model response scoring: The model generates a response to the last user message in each conversation. A model-based grader scores the model's response. The grader independently judges whether the model's response satisfies each criterion in the scoring criteria, and if so, awards the corresponding score; otherwise, no score is given.
- Overall score calculation: Calculates the average score across all conversations to obtain the model's overall score on HealthBench. Subdivides the scores by themes and axes to provide more detailed performance analysis.
- Model validation and improvement: Based on comparison with doctor scores, validates the accuracy of the model grader, and adjusts and improves the grader as needed to ensure the reliability and validity of the evaluation results.
