What is GWM-1
GWM-1 is Runway's first general world model, built on Gen-4.5 . It uses an autoregressive architecture to predict video content frame by frame and supports real-time interaction. The model includes three variants: GWM Worlds for real-time environment simulation, generating immersive, infinitely explorable spaces; GWM Avatars is an audio-driven interactive video generation model that simulates natural human movements and expressions; GWM Robotics is a robot training simulator that generates synthetic data to accelerate robot development. By simulating real-world interactions, GWM-1 can drive AI's shift from passive generation to active simulation, supporting development in fields such as gaming, education, and robotics.
GWM-1's Main Features

GWM-1's Technical Principles
-
Autoregressive Architecture: GWM-1 is an autoregressive model built on Gen-4.5. By predicting video content frame by frame, it uses the information from the current frame to generate the next frame, achieving dynamic simulation.
-
Pixel-Level Prediction: The model learns physics, lighting, geometry, and causality directly from video frames, building an understanding of the world through pixel-level prediction. This approach enables the model to generate coherent virtual environments that conform to physical laws.
-
Multimodal Input and Interaction: GWM-1 supports multiple input methods, such as text prompts, images, and audio, and enables interaction with virtual environments through action conditions such as camera poses and robot commands.
-
Large-Scale Data Training: The model is trained on large-scale, high-quality data, gaining a deep understanding of how the world works and demonstrating good generalization ability across different scenarios.
-
Synthetic Data and Policy Evaluation: In the robotics field, GWM-1 helps robots rehearse behaviors in virtual environments by generating synthetic data, evaluates the reliability of policies, and accelerates development and optimization.

GWM-1's Application Scenarios
-
Infinitely Explorable Worlds: GWM Worlds can generate immersive, infinitely expandable virtual environments, so developers do not need to manually design every scene, greatly saving time and cost.
-
Immersive Virtual Environments: GWM Worlds can generate complex virtual scenes in real time, supporting users to freely explore in VR, suitable for scenarios such as virtual tourism and virtual education.
-
Virtual Meetings and Collaboration: GWM Avatars can generate realistic virtual characters for virtual meetings and remote collaboration, improving communication efficiency and experience.
-
Synthetic data generation: GWM Robotics can generate synthetic data for robot training and policy evaluation, helping robots rehearse behaviors in virtual environments and improve their performance in the real world.
-
High-risk scenario simulation: By simulating high-risk or difficult-to-reproduce real-world scenarios, it helps robots learn and optimize behavioral strategies in advance, reducing risks in actual testing.
