What is Eagle 2.5
Eagle 2.5 is a vision-language model introduced by NVIDIA, an AI model focused on long-context multimodal learning, with a parameter scale of only 8B. Despite its relatively small number of parameters, it performs excellently in processing high-resolution images and long video sequences, with performance comparable to the larger Qwen 2.5-VL-72B and InternVL2.5-78B. Eagle 2.5 adopts innovative training strategies: Information-First Sampling and Progressive Post-Training. Information-First Sampling ensures image integrity and optimization of visual details through image region preservation and automatic degradation sampling techniques. Progressive Post-Training gradually expands the context window, allowing the model to maintain stable performance under different input lengths.
Main Features of Eagle 2.5
- Long Video and High-Resolution Image Understanding: Eagle 2.5 can process large-scale videos and high-resolution images, excelling at handling long video sequences (such as 512-frame inputs), scoring as high as 72.4% on the Video-MME benchmark, comparable to larger-scale models.
- Support for Diverse Tasks: It performs excellently in video and image understanding tasks. For example, it scores 74.8%, 77.6%, and 66.4% on video benchmarks such as MVBench, MLVU, and LongVideoBench, respectively, and scores 94.1%, 87.5%, and 80.4% on image understanding tasks such as DocVQA, ChartQA, and InfoVQA, respectively.
- Flexibility and Generalization Ability: By combining SigLIP visual encoding and an MLP projection layer, Eagle 2.5 demonstrates strong flexibility and generalization ability across diverse tasks.
Technical Principles of Eagle 2.5
- Information-First Sampling: Eagle 2.5 adopts Image Area Preservation (IAP) technology, preserving more than 60% of the original image area while reducing aspect ratio distortion. Automatic Degradation Sampling (ADS) technology can dynamically balance visual and textual input according to context length, ensuring text integrity and optimization of visual details.
- Progressive Post-Training: The strategy gradually expands the model's context window from 32K to 128K tokens, enabling the model to maintain stable performance under different input lengths, avoiding overfitting to a single context range. This ensures the model's flexibility across diverse tasks.
- Customized Dataset: Eagle 2.5 uses the customized dataset Eagle-Video-110K, designed specifically for long video understanding. The dataset adopts a dual annotation approach. The top-down method combines story-level segmentation and human-annotated chapter metadata, while the bottom-up method uses GPT-4o to generate question-answer pairs for short clips. Through cosine similarity filtering, the dataset emphasizes diversity rather than redundancy, ensuring narrative coherence and fine-grained annotation.
- Visual Encoding and Projection Layer: Eagle 2.5 combines SigLIP visual encoding and an MLP projection layer to align visual embeddings with the language model representation space. This enhances the model's flexibility and adaptability across diverse tasks.
