What is Cua
Cua is an open-source AI Agent project launched by the trycua team, providing macOS users with high-performance virtualization and AI agent capabilities. Cua is based on Apple's Virtualization.Framework and supports creating and running macOS and Linux virtual machines on Apple Silicon, with performance close to native levels (about 90%). With Cua, users can transform AI from a chat tool into an intelligent assistant that directly operates the operating system, improving efficiency in development, automated office work, and intelligent assistance.
Cua's main features
- High-performance virtualization: Run macOS and Linux virtual machines on Apple Silicon, with performance close to native.
- AI agent operation: AI operates applications in a virtual machine (such as a browser or VS Code).
- Secure isolation: All operations run in a sandbox environment, protecting the host system.
- Multi-application support: AI simultaneously controls multiple programs to accomplish complex tasks.
- Compatibility with multiple models: Supports AI models such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
- Task automation: Provides task script support, making it convenient for users to define AI operation workflows.
Cua's technical principles
- Apple's Virtualization.Framework: A low-level framework provided by Apple for virtualization, supporting the creation and management of virtual machines on macOS. Cua implements high-performance virtualization based on this framework, ensuring that virtual machine operating efficiency is close to that of the native system.
- Sandboxed environment: All virtual machines run in an isolated sandbox environment, ensuring the security of the host system. The sandbox environment restricts virtual machine access to host resources and prevents potential security risks.
- AI agent framework: The core of Cua is the AI agent framework, which supports AI directly operating desktop applications in a virtual machine. Users define task scripts, and AI executes complex tasks, such as opening applications, entering text, and clicking buttons.
- Multi-model support: Cua supports multiple AI models, including OpenAI's GPT series and Anthropic's Claude series, and users can choose different models according to their needs.
- Task trajectory recording: Cua provides task trajectory recording functionality, recording AI operation processes in the virtual machine. Trajectory recording is used for debugging, analyzing, and optimizing AI behavior.
- Python bindings and extensions: Cua provides Python bindings, making it convenient for developers to call and control AI agents based on Python scripts. Developers can write custom task scripts to implement complex automated workflows.

Cua's application scenarios
- Automated office work: Automatically process documents, fill out forms, send emails, etc., improving work efficiency and reducing repetitive labor.
- Software development: Assist in writing code, debugging programs, searching documentation, and automatically fixing errors in code, improving development speed and quality.
- Education and training: Provide guidance according to learning progress, helping students better understand and master knowledge, while protecting the host system from impact.
- Security testing: AI simulates various attack scenarios, detects system vulnerabilities, and ensures the security of the host system.
- Automation of complex tasks: Operate a browser, terminal, and code editor simultaneously within a virtual machine to complete complex multi-step tasks, such as automated deployment, data scraping, and analysis, etc.
