What Is CSM
CSM (Conversational Speech Model) is a new type of speech dialogue model introduced by the Sesame team, enhancing the naturalness and emotional interaction capabilities of voice assistants. CSM is based on a multimodal learning framework, combines text and speech data, and uses a Transformer architecture to directly generate natural, coherent speech. The core advantage of CSM lies in dynamically adjusting the intonation, rhythm, and emotional expression of speech based on dialogue history and context, achieving an interactive experience closer to real human conversation. CSM optimizes training efficiency based on computational amortization techniques, is trained on large-scale datasets, and improves the model's performance and expressiveness.
Main Features of CSM
- Emotional Expression: Adjusts the intonation, rhythm, and emotional coloring of speech according to dialogue content and emotional background, making interactions more engaging.
- Natural Dialogue: Based on understanding dialogue history and context, generates more natural and coherent speech responses, avoiding mechanical answers.
- Situational Adaptation: Adjusts speech style according to different scenarios (such as formal, casual, comforting, motivating, etc.), improving the appropriateness of interactions.
- Multimodal Interaction: Combines text and speech input to generate high-quality speech output, supporting more complex dialogue structures.
- Low-Latency Generation: Based on an optimized architecture, achieves low-latency speech generation, suitable for real-time dialogue scenarios.
- Multilingual Support: Currently mainly English, with plans to expand to multiple languages in the future, enhancing cross-language interaction capabilities.
Technical Principles of CSM
- Multimodal Transformer Architecture: CSM combines text and speech data and processes them based on two autoregressive Transformer models. The first "Backbone" model processes the zero-level encoding of text and speech (semantic information), and the second "Decoder" model processes the remaining audio encoding (acoustic details), achieving end-to-end speech generation.
- Residual Vector Quantization(RVQ): Based on RVQ technology, continuous audio waveforms are encoded into discrete audio token sequences, including semantic tokens and acoustic tokens. Semantic tokens capture high-level features of speech, while acoustic tokens preserve the details of natural speech.
- Dialogue History Modeling: CSM models dialogue history, captures contextual information, and generates speech responses that better fit the dialogue scenario.
- Computational Amortization: To address the high memory burden during training, CSM uses computational amortization techniques to train the decoder on only some audio frames while retaining the complete RVQ encoding, significantly improving training efficiency.
- Real-Time Interaction Optimization: Based on an optimized model architecture and training strategy, CSM can generate speech at low latency, making it suitable for real-time dialogue scenarios.
