What is Claude Skills
Claude Skills is a new feature launched by Anthropic for its AI assistantClaude, which packages instructions, scripts, and resources in the form of folders, enabling Claude to flexibly call professional tools to complete specific tasks like a human. Each Skill is a directory containing askill.mdfile, in which task instructions and execution code are stored, for example, to process Excel spreadsheets or generate PPTs. Unlike traditional plugins, Skills use an on-demand loading mechanism, invoked only for relevant tasks, greatly saving computing resources. Currently, there are preset Skills such as PDF processing and Slack GIF generation, supporting developers in custom sharing, and it is regarded by the industry as an important innovation in AI tooling.
Main features of Claude Skills
- Dynamic task loading and execution: Skills are independent modules (folders) containing detailed instructions, executable scripts, and related resources. Claude can automatically determine and invoke the most relevant skill package according to the user's specific task requirements, ensuring the accuracy and standardization of the output results.
- Powerful document processing capabilities: The feature enables Claude to process documents in multiple formats, such as PDF, Word, PPTX, and Excel files. It can analyze content, extract data, and generate new documents that meet specific formatting requirements, greatly facilitating office scenarios.
- Code execution and automation: Skills support embedding and running scripts such as Python, allowing Claude to perform complex operations such as data analysis, automated tasks (such as web scraping), code generation, and review, extending its capabilities from text processing to practical operation domains.
- Composability and cross-platform compatibility: Multiple Skills can be combined to handle complex workflows, and they are designed to be portable, able to run on different Claude application platforms (such as desktop applications and APIs), providing a high degree of flexibility.
- Enterprise-level integration and customization: The feature places special emphasis on enterprise applications, supports connection with office software such as Microsoft 365, and can make Claude's output conform to organizational standards by loading skill packages containing internal knowledge such as company brand guidelines and code repositories, facilitating team collaboration.

How to use Claude Skills
- Enable the feature and access permissions: You need to have a Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan account, and enable the "code execution and file creation" permission in the application settings.
- Create a Skill through conversation: In Claude's chat interface, you can directly initiate the Skill creation process through natural language instructions (for example, "help me create an image editing skill"). Claude will refer to its documentation and generate for you a draft skill folder structure containing instructions (
SKILL.md), scripts, and resource files. - Design and structure Skill content: The core of a Skill is a Markdown file (usually
SKILL.md), which contains YAML metadata and a detailed description of the skill's functionality. To improve efficiency and save token consumption, it is recommended to split complex instructions into multiple mutually exclusive or independent files, and reference them in the main file. Clearly indicate when Claude should directly run the script and when to use it only as reference documentation. - Let Claude automatically invoke the Skill: Skills are designed to load on demand. When you make a task request, Claude will automatically identify the task type and invoke the most relevant configured Skill to execute it, without you needing to select manually.
- Testing and iterative optimization: Observe how Claude uses your Skill in real usage scenarios. Pay attention to whether it shows misunderstandings, execution difficulties, or over-reliance on certain context, and continuously adjust and optimize the Skill's instructions and structure based on this feedback. This is an iterative process.
- Sharing and cross-platform use: The created Skill folder can be easily shared with others. In addition, Skills have good portability and can run on different Claude clients (such as the desktop app, API, etc.), ensuring a consistent user experience.
Application scenarios of Claude Skills
- Content creation and office automation: It can automatically generate and edit long-form articles, marketing copy, and business reports, and can intelligently convert files between different formats (such as converting files in Box to PowerPoint, Excel, or Word), significantly improving office efficiency.
- Data analysis and research assistance: It excels at processing complex text data and can be used for literature reviews, trend analysis, data mining, and extracting information from charts, providing support for research decisions in industries such as finance and retail.
- Customer service and operations management: As a virtual assistant, it automatically answers customer inquiries and can simplify internal business processes by classifying and summarizing documents, improving operational efficiency and user satisfaction.
- Programming and software development: It has the ability to generate, debug, and explain code as well as generate software blueprints (Blueprints), and can assist developers with tasks across the entire program design cycle.
- Visual information processing: It can understand and analyze uploaded images, charts, graphics, and other visual information, and transcribe text or extract key insights from them, applying this in fields such as logistics and financial services.
- Cross-platform integration and process automation: It can deeply integrate with third-party applications such as Notion and Canva, capture unique contextual information, automate workflows, and achieve a seamless connection from problem to action.
