What is BioMedGPT-R1
BioMedGPT-R1 is an upgraded open-source multimodal biomedical large model jointly launched by Tsinghua University's Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR) and Beijing Shuimu Bio Co., Ltd. BioMedGPT-R1 is based on DeepSeek R1 technology, updating the text foundation model and cross-modal feature alignment to achieve unified integration of biological modalities (such as molecules and proteins) with natural language. The model can handle a variety of biomedical tasks, supports cross-modal question answering and deep reasoning, and is widely used in fields such as drug molecule understanding and target mining. Compared with previous versions, BioMedGPT-R1 shows significantly improved performance on tasks such as chemical molecule description, and approaches human expert level on biomedical text question answering tasks.
Main Features of BioMedGPT-R1
- Cross-modal question answering and reasoning: Supports interactive question answering between natural language and biological modalities (such as chemical molecules and proteins), combines text and biological data for deep reasoning, and provides comprehensive analysis for biomedical research.
- Drug molecule understanding and analysis: Performs reasoning and analysis on chemical small molecules in terms of structure, functional groups, biochemical properties, and more.
- Drug target exploration and mining: Analyzes biological data and textual information to assist in discovering potential drug targets and accelerate the early stages of drug development.
Technical Principles of BioMedGPT-R1
- Multimodal fusion architecture: Integrates data from the natural language modality and biological modalities (such as molecules and proteins). Based on biological modality encoders (such as molecular encoders and protein encoders) to extract features, an "alignment translation layer" maps them into the natural language representation space, achieving unified fusion of multimodal data.
- Cross-modal feature alignment: Uses an alignment translation layer (Translator) to align the encoded output of biological modalities with the semantic representation of the text modality. The model simultaneously processes biological data and natural language instructions, supporting cross-modal reasoning.
- DeepSeek R1 distillation technology: Updates the text foundation model based on the distilled version of DeepSeek R1, improving the model's text reasoning capability and further optimizing performance on multimodal tasks.
- Two-stage training strategy:
- First stage: Train only the alignment translation layer to map biological modality representations into the semantic space.
- Second stage: Simultaneously fine-tune the alignment translation layer and the foundation large language model to stimulate the model's multimodal deep reasoning capability on downstream tasks.
