What is AutoDocs
AutoDocs is an open-source code documentation automation tool developed by TrySita, helping developers efficiently generate and maintain codebase documentation. By deeply parsing the codebase's abstract syntax tree (AST) and building a dependency graph, it generates accurate and dependency-aware documentation and summaries. AutoDocs supports multiple programming languages, including TypeScript, JavaScript, and Python, and is expanding support for more languages. The tool provides a FastAPI backend for data ingestion and search, as well as a Next.js Web UI for browsing and exploring documentation. It has a built-in MCP server, allowing intelligent tools to perform deep searches via HTTP.
Main features of AutoDocs
-
Deep codebase parsing: Parses the codebase via tree-sitter and SCIP, builds a dependency graph, and generates documentation in dependency order.
-
Multi-language support: Supports TypeScript, JavaScript, and Python, and is expanding support for Go, Kotlin, Java, and Rust.
-
Automatic document generation and updates: Automatically generates repository-level, dependency-aware documentation and summaries, and can automatically update them after code changes.
-
Built-in MCP server: Provides an HTTP interface and supports deep searches by intelligent tools.
-
Web UI exploration: Provides a Next.js Web UI for users to browse and explore documentation.
-
Flexible integration: Supports rapid deployment via Docker and is easy to integrate into existing projects.
Technical principles of AutoDocs
-
Abstract syntax tree (AST) parsing: Uses tree-sitter to parse code and obtain code structure and semantic information.
-
Symbol information protocol (SCIP): Parses symbol information in code via SCIP, used to build the dependency graph.
-
Dependency graph construction: Builds a code dependency graph based on the parsing results of AST and SCIP, including files, definitions, calls, and import relationships.
-
Documentation generation: Generates repository-level, dependency-aware documentation and summaries based on the dependency graph, ensuring documentation accuracy and high signal.
-
FastAPI backend: Provides data ingestion and search functions, supporting dynamic generation and querying of documentation.
-
Next.js Web UI: Provides a user interface for users to browse and explore the generated documentation.
-
MCP server: The built-in MCP server allows intelligent tools to perform deep searches via the HTTP interface.
-
Docker deployment: Provides a local deployment solution via Docker and Docker Compose, making it easy to quickly set up and use.

Application scenarios of AutoDocs
-
Agile development teams: In a rapidly iterating development environment, AutoDocs can automatically generate and update documentation, reducing the workload of manual documentation maintenance and ensuring documentation stays in sync with code.
-
Large enterprise applications: In large projects involving collaboration among multiple teams, AutoDocs can generate high-quality code documentation, promoting understanding and collaboration among different teams.
-
Continuous integration processes: Integrated into continuous integration (CI) processes, it automatically updates documentation after each code commit, ensuring documentation always reflects the latest project status.
-
Project showcase and maintenance: In open source projects or public code repositories, AutoDocs can automatically generate README files and other documentation, improving the readability and appeal of the project.
