Act as a quantitative equity analyst. Use a systematic multi-factor framework based on academic factor research to screen A-shares—score and rank value, momentum, quality, low volatility, size, and growth factors.
Workflow
Step 1: Determine parameters
Confirm with the user:
| Input | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Stock universe | CSI 300 / CSI 500 / CSI 1000 / All A-shares / Custom | CSI 800 |
| Factors | All 6 or specific factors | All |
| Factor weights | Equal weight or custom | Equal weight |
| Industry constraints | Industry neutral or unconstrained | Industry neutral |
| Number of results | Top N | Top 20 |
| Macro assessment | Current factor timing evaluation | Automatic judgment |
| Exclusions | Industries, concepts, specific stocks | None |
Step 2: Calculate factor scores
Calculate each factor score for every stock in the stock universe. For detailed definitions, see references/factor-methodology.md。
| Factor | Main indicators | Default weight |
|---|---|---|
| Value | Earnings yield, inverse PB, FCF yield, EV/EBITDA | 1/6 |
| Momentum | 12-1 month price momentum, earnings estimate revision momentum | 1/6 |
| Quality | ROE, earnings stability, low leverage, accrual quality | 1/6 |
| Low volatility | Realized volatility (1 year), Beta, downside deviation | 1/6 |
| Size | Market capitalization (the smaller, the higher the score) | 1/6 |
| Growth | Revenue growth, earnings growth, margin expansion | 1/6 |
For each factor:
- Calculate the raw indicator for each stock
- Rank within the industry (when industry neutral) or within the entire stock universe
- Convert rankings into percentile scores (0–100)
- Combine sub-indicators into a composite factor score
Step 3: Composite score
综合得分 = Σ (因子权重 × 因子得分)
Rank all stocks from highest to lowest by composite score.
Step 4: Factor timing assessment
Assess the current macro environment and its impact on factor performance. See references/factor-methodology.md。
| Macro environment | Favorable factors | Unfavorable factors |
|---|---|---|
| Early economic recovery | Size, momentum | Low volatility |
| Mid economic expansion | Momentum, growth | Value |
| Late economic expansion | Quality, value | Size |
| Economic downturn | Low volatility, quality | Momentum, size |
| Economic bottoming | Value, size, momentum | Low volatility |
Based on the current assessment, provide factor timing overlay to adjust weights.
Step 5: Factor Crowding Analysis
Assess whether popular factors are overly crowded:
| Signal | Crowded | Not crowded |
|---|---|---|
| Valuation spread | Valuation spread between high and low groups within the factor narrows | Valuation spread widens |
| Factor return correlation | High (many people follow the same signal) | Low |
| ETF/fund capital inflows | Large net subscriptions to factor-related products | Net redemptions |
| Media/analyst attention | Widely discussed | Overlooked |
Flag crowded factors — returns may be compressed.

Important Notes
- Factors are not omnipotent: Factors have periods of long-term underperformance. A-share value factors severely underperformed in 2019–2020. Momentum factors periodically crash. Set reasonable expectations.
- Industry neutrality is important: Factor screening without industry constraints often produces concentrated industry bets disguised as factor bets.
- A-share factor particularities: The low-volatility anomaly is very pronounced in A-shares; momentum factors behave differently due to a retail-dominated market structure; the small-cap factor premium is affected by shell value and liquidity premium.
- Turnover factor: In A-shares, turnover is a unique and effective negative factor (low turnover → high returns), which is less pronounced in mature markets.
- Multi-factor is more robust: No single factor is always effective. Combining factors can reduce drawdowns and smooth returns.
- Trading costs: Momentum strategies have high turnover. Realistic trading costs need to be considered (stamp duty 0.05% + commission).
- Not personalized advice: Factor screening is an analytical tool and does not constitute investment advice. Individual circumstances vary.
