Researching claims, finding original sources, cross-referencing information across platforms, and verifying online content.
When to Use
- User asks to research a specific claim, tweet, post, or article
- "Find out what X is" / "What was revealed in Y"
- Cross-referencing a social media post with news coverage
- Fact-checking or contextualizing online content
- Investigating a leak, announcement, or controversy
Core Workflow
1. Identify the Source Chain
Before searching, map what you know:
- Primary source: the original tweet/post/article
- Secondary sources: news coverage, reactions, analysis
- Context: what domain knowledge is needed to understand it
2. Source Access Strategy (Critical Path)
⚠️ PITFALL: Do NOT sequentially try search engines. Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Brave, and Yahoo ALL aggressively block automated browsers with CAPTCHAs. Each blocked attempt wastes a tool call and provides zero information. Recognize the pattern after 1-2 blocks and pivot immediately.
⭐ PRIORITY 0 — the web_search TOOL (not the browser). If Hermes web tools
are configured, call web_search FIRST: it bypasses browser bot detection
entirely. Config since 13-ago-2026: web.search_backend = firecrawl (the
upgraded /search v2 returns query-relevant markdown excerpts inside each
result's description — fact-seeking queries are often answerable directly,
no web_extract round-trip needed; ~1 Firecrawl credit per search), with
web.backend = ddgs as automatic fallback (free, no key) and
web.extract_backend = firecrawl. Check hermes config get web.search_backend;
if unset: pip install ddgs in the Hermes venv + hermes config set web.backend ddgs (or firecrawl if a FIRECRAWL_API_KEY is set in the environment).
For full page content use web_extract or curl (raw.githubusercontent.com /
API endpoints).
Recommended approach by priority:
| Priority | Method | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Direct URL navigation to known news sites | If you know the domain (e.g., theverge.com/openai, techcrunch.com) |
| 2 | Site-specific search (e.g., site's own search bar) | Tech news sites (The Verge, TechCrunch, ArsTechnica) are less aggressive with bot detection than general search engines |
| 3 | Hacker News Algolia search (hn.algolia.com) | For tech/AI topics — rarely blocks, good coverage of developer community reactions |
| 4 | Social media platform search (if accessible) | X/Twitter requires login; Bluesky requires login; try Nitter instances as fallback |
| 5 | curl / web_extract for direct page access | Avoids browser bot detection entirely; works for public pages and API endpoints |
| 6 | General search engines (Google, Bing, etc.) | LAST RESORT — almost always blocked for automated browsers |
2b. Catalogues, listings and directories (many pages, server-rendered)
When the target is a catalogue (subsidised training offer, tenders, directories,
job boards) rather than a single article, scraping raw HTML is faster than
web_extract + LLM reading:
- Enumerate the catalogue's programme families first — the offer is split
across several listing pages (one per family/segment), and no single page holds
everything. Fetch one URL per family and save each page to a scratch dir with
curl -sL -A "<browser UA>" <url> -o <name>.html(no JS needed). - For >10 pages, batch the downloads from Python with
subprocess.run(["curl", ...])inside aThreadPoolExecutor(max_workers=8).urllib.requestfails withCERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILEDon macOS Python installs without a CA bundle — curl is the reliable transport. - Parse the card container, not the page text: split the HTML on the item tag
(
<article,<li) and pull each field with its own regex. A single regex that requires several fields (title and date) silently returns ZERO rows whenever the site renders one of them only in some sections — e.g. tabs where only the closed/past list prints a<time>element. Require only what you truly need. - Tabs are state.
id="tab-<pid>-1"/-2split open vs closed items. Split on the tabpanel tag, tag each card with its tab, and dedupe by URL keeping the open state. - Detail pages usually expose structured fields via CSS classes (label + value divs) — extract by class rather than reading prose, and prefer "Sin fecha publicada" over guessing a date the source does not state.
- Re-derive every count (per region, per segment) programmatically from the scraped records and cross-check against the site's own filters before writing anything down.
3. Platform-Specific Notes
X/Twitter: Requires login for search and most profile pages. Nitter instances are unreliable (frequently down or blocked). If the tweet embeds images, those may be accessible via direct URL even without login.
Reddit: All direct routes fail — web_extract/firecrawl returns "Website Not Supported", and old.reddit.com/*.json with a browser User-Agent still hits the challenge wall (even from residential IPs; do NOT loop retries with header variants). Validated ladder: (1) Arctic Shift mirror — https://arctic-shift.photon-reddit.com/api/comments/tree?link_id=t3_<post_id>&limit=N returns the full comment tree as JSON with no auth; parse defensively (nodes may come flat or nested under data), recurse replies.data.children, skip [deleted]/[removed], cap depth and chars. (2) Same domain's other API endpoints for post selftext/metadata. (3) Last resort: real browser automation.
Bluesky: Requires login for search. Public post URLs may be accessible without login.
Google: Almost always blocks automated browsers. Even with different User-Agent strings, returns CAPTCHA/sorry pages.
Tech news sites: The Verge, TechCrunch, Ars Technica, Tom's Guide — these are generally accessible and have their own search functions. Start here.
Hacker News: hn.algolia.com provides search over HN stories and comments. Rarely blocks. Good for tech/AI community discussions.
4. Triangulation Pattern
When you find partial information:
- Note what you confirmed vs. what's still unknown
- Search for the specific terms/names from what you found
- Check if the original source has been covered by multiple outlets
- Look for primary source links within secondary coverage
5. Handling Blocked Access
When a platform blocks you:
- Do NOT retry the same platform with slightly different queries
- Do NOT try all search engines sequentially (they all use similar bot detection)
- DO pivot to direct site navigation
- DO try curl-based approaches for public content
- DO note what you found vs. what remains unconfirmed
Common Research Patterns
"Research this tweet/post"
- Try to find the tweet via direct URL or Nitter
- Search for quoted keywords on tech news sites
- Check HN Algolia for community discussion
- Look for the subject matter on news aggregators
- Summarize what's confirmed, what's inferred, what's unknown
"What is X?" (technical term/concept)
- Check if it's defined in any accessible documentation
- Search HN for developer discussion
- Check tech news sites for coverage
- Cross-reference multiple sources
"Find the original source"
- Start with the most specific information you have
- Work outward to less specific searches
- Use site-specific searches rather than general search engines
- Check if anyone has archived or quoted the original

Anti-Patterns (Do NOT Do These)
- Trying Google then Bing then DuckDuckGo then Brave sequentially when each blocks
- Retrying a blocked platform with minor query variations
- Spending 5+ tool calls on platforms requiring login without noting the limitation
- Treating "search engine blocked" as a novel event — it's the expected default
- Not summarizing partial findings when full research isn't possible
