AI-written web fiction often has common problems: too neat, fond of parallelism, empty lyricism, translationese, highbrow word choice but no web-fiction feel. This skill changes it into the feel of a "real web-fiction author."
When to use
- The main text reads "like AI / like an essay / with translationese"
- AI-generated drafts need to be grounded into web fiction
- The writing is too "stiff/formal," lacking the crisp thrill of web fiction
Typical symptoms of AI flavor → fixes
| Symptom | Manifestation | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Gratuitous rhetoric ⭐ | Metaphors/stacked metaphors that exist for rhetoric's sake and do not help the plot or emotion | For every metaphor ask "does it make readers understand better or feel more thrill?" If not, delete it; for thrilling fiction, prioritize concrete actions over metaphors |
| References with a large span / mismatched references ⭐ | Suddenly quoting classical poems, allusions, academic concepts, or memes unfitting for the character in plain writing; inconsistent register | First define the register and keep it unified throughout; ask "would this narrator say this?" "Is it on the same channel as the whole text?" If mismatched, delete or replace |
| Parallelism addiction | Three-sentence parallelism for lyricism, "not… but…" | Delete two sentences, keep the most powerful one, or change it into action |
| Shouting emotions (not showing) | "I feel so heartache" "he felt incomparably angry" | Show it through expression/action/physiological reaction/subtext and let readers feel it themselves (see details in references/show-emotion.md, for specialized fixes use the emotion skill) |
| Translationese | "This is such a beautiful…" "unbelievable" | Change to colloquial speech: "so beautiful it's unreal" "absurd" |
| Overly neat / sentences too smooth | Every sentence is about the same length, neat and uniform, too smooth; adjacent paragraphs have similar character counts and line counts | Make sentence lengths uneven (alternate short and long + occasional 50-character long sentence), add ellipses/dashes/line breaks for pauses; break paragraph symmetry (see details in references/sentence-rhythm.md) |
| Repeated rhetoric/sentence patterns/words | The same metaphor, sentence pattern, or word appears repeatedly | Check the whole text for duplication; delete or replace |
| Tautology | "He was very angry, he was furious"—saying one meaning twice | Keep the most precise one, preferably change it into action |
| Abuse of extreme words | Very/extremely/greatly/immeasurably/utterly piled up | Delete ninety percent; let degree come from concrete imagery |
| Inexplicable declarative sentences / forced elevation | Suddenly inserting empty talk like "life is always full of challenges" | Delete all |
| Periods used as enumeration commas | "Apple. Banana. Orange." | For items in a list use the enumeration comma "、", commas for pauses, and reserve periods for complete sentences |
| Decorative symbol addiction | Sprinkling ✦✨◆●★ in the main text/titles as decoration or separators | Delete all; use blank lines or "——" for separators, and use plain text for titles |
| Ellipsis used incorrectly | Use ... or 。。。 |
Chinese ellipsis uses "……" (six dots as one punctuation mark) |
| Dash overused | —— appears repeatedly | Use it very rarely; if a period or comma works, don't use it; at most once per chapter |
| Square brackets in the main text | Main text uses 【】 | Main text does not use 【】 (only exception: system-flow pop-ups) |
| Corner brackets/Japanese-style quotes | Dialogue uses 「」 or 『』 | Simplified Chinese web fiction does not use 「」『』; always change to curly double quotes "", and use curly single quotes '' for nesting |
| Quotation marks used incorrectly | Using single quotes '' as the main quote for no reason, or using English "" '' | The main quote uses curly double quotes ""; single quotes '' are only for nesting |
| Overuse of fancy words | Piling up four-character idioms and formal language | Switch to the plain expressions commonly used in web fiction |
| Over-explaining | Explaining all the character's emotions/motives | Leave blanks; let actions and dialogue speak for themselves |
| AI transition words | "However" "Meanwhile" "Moreover" "It is worth mentioning that" | Delete them or replace with colloquial connectors |
| Stiff dialogue | Characters speak like formal writing | Change to colloquial speech that fits the character, with modal particles |
Workflow
- First read the user's text and mark the sentences with the strongest AI flavor
- Rewrite each spot according to the table above, giving an "original sentence → revised" comparison
- Adjust the overall rhythm: add fragmented sentences, single-sentence paragraphs, speed up dialogue
- Keep the plot and payoff unchanged; only change the "feel"
For the complete in-depth checklist (including gratuitous rhetoric, wide-span references, register consistency, show-don't-tell), see
references/anti-ai-checklist.md。
Web fiction writing feel
- Short: avoid long, difficult sentences; one sentence, one meaning
- Fast: dialogue and action drive it forward, less narration
- Hard-hitting: hammer out emotions with concrete details, don't pile up adjectives
- Alive: appropriately colloquial, internet-savvy, with modal particles, but don't overdo it
- Consistent:First define the register (plain/ornate/ancient/modern), keep it uniform throughout——a plain, mature style shouldn't randomly cite allusions and weird stuff; consistency of style > a single brilliant sentence
Note
- Removing AI flavor ≠ adding rotten internet memes; overdoing memes also makes the manuscript cheap
- Keep the author's original style; only remove the "machine feel," don't force a style change
- After revising, you can compare with the original to confirm the plot/characters haven't changed
Coordination
- When writing the main text, produce less AI flavor → use
expand(already has built-in requirements to avoid AI tone). - Before revising, if you want to firstquantify and locate"how strong the AI flavor is, which sentences lose points" → use
aidetect(AI flavor index + eight indicators + location checklist, seereferences/ai-detector.md); cutting according to its priority is faster. - This skill treatssurface(rhetoric/punctuation/symbols/repetition/extreme words). If the surface is cleaned up but it still "feels like AI/like a manual," that'sa deeper lack of human flavor——Use
humanskill to add a sense of loss of control (irrational behavior/incomplete emotion/unclosed loop/personal bias), seereferences/human-texture.md。
