Evaluate what the player can infer from the space itself.
Environmental storytelling is not merely placing lore objects. It is the arrangement of evidence that lets players infer history, function, conflict, culture, and recent change.
Evidence Layers
Inspect available material for:
- architecture and spatial function
- wear/use patterns
- objects and material culture
- damage/repair
- ownership/status markers
- adaptation and improvisation
- traces of recent activity
- contrast between intended and current use
- environmental consequences of world rules
- NPC routines if supplied
- readable changes after player/world events
Inference Test
For each intended narrative claim ask:
- What can the player directly observe?
- What inference does that evidence support?
- Is another interpretation equally or more plausible?
- Does dialogue/text redundantly explain what the space already shows?
- Is crucial information hidden behind optional micro-detail?
Audit Categories
Flag:
- decoration without narrative function
- identical storytelling density everywhere
- lore props substituting for spatial logic
- environment contradicting stated economy/culture/history
- important location lacking traces of its supposed use
- catastrophe with no material aftermath
- exposition duplicating obvious environmental evidence
- overly obscure clues required for basic comprehension
- props that exist solely because the author knows the backstory
- level-design/navigation needs fighting the intended narrative read
Findings
For each finding include severity, confidence, intended inference, actual evidence, likely player inference, and smallest repair category.
Repair categories:
- add evidence
- remove redundant explanation
- strengthen spatial contrast
- show aftermath
- clarify function
- redistribute evidence
- align environment with world rule
- preserve gameplay readability
Do not redesign art or level layout unless requested.

Final Quality Check
Ask: If all dialogue and codex text disappeared, what would a careful player still understand about what happened here and how people live?
