Overview
We design an email sequence that achieves business goals while fully complying with the recipient consent requirements of Korea's Information and Communications Network Act (Article 50).
It covers various sequence types such as drip campaigns, customer onboarding, reactivation, and newsletters, and automatically includes the required legal elements.

Practical Email Marketing Patterns (Korea 2026 Market)
Email has 38 times the target reachof SNS, and 99% of users check it daily. However, compliance with the Information and Communications Network Act is the baseline, and on top of that, the three axes of content, technique, and marketing must work organically together to produce real performance.
7 Key Patterns
① Korea Average Metrics (Based on the Stibee 2025 Report)
| Industry | Average Open Rate | Average Click Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Apparel/Fashion Accessories | 19.9% (1위) | — |
| Media | 18.9% | 2.2% (1위) |
| Arts/Entertainment | 17.4% | — |
| Corporate Member Average | 13.9% | 1.1% |
| Individual Member Average | 25.4% | 3.0% |
Individual-published newsletters > corporate-published — due to the difference in the density of the publisher-subscriber relationship. B2B SaaS and D2C usually fall within the corporate member distribution.
② Send Timing (Stibee 2025 Data)
- Monday Send: Open rate 15.5% (highest)
- Friday: 14.9%
- Tuesday: 14.2%
Korea differs from the global trend (Tuesday dominance) — the effect comes from exposure during the time when people organize their inboxes after the weekend.
③ Balance of the Three Axes: Content, Technique, and Marketing
Email cannot succeed with just one axis done well. The three axes must work organically together:
| 축 | Purpose | Suitable Email |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Brand loyalty/trust | Knowledge business/B2B/high involvement |
| Technique | Deliverability/open rate | Internal notices/transactions/essential notifications |
| Marketing | Click rate/landing conversion | Direct revenue impact (end of funnel) |
If only the content is good and the technique is weak, it will not reach. If only the technique is good and the content is weak, it ends after one open. Three-axis balanceis the cumulative result.
④ Automated Email = 2-4x Compared with Regular (2025 Verified)
| Automated Email Type | Compared with Regular |
|---|---|
| Automated email (all) | Open rate 1.6배, click-through rate 3.8배 |
| Welcome email | Open rate·click-through rate 2.5배 |
Right after sign-up, right after purchase, right after an event, etc. Timing·personalized automated triggersis key. Prioritize automation over manual bulk sending.
⑤ Subject line patterns that raise open rates (Korea)
- Simple and clear (10 characters or fewer): spark curiosity
- Urgency: "Midnight tonight deadline"·"32 minutes 24 seconds left"
- Numbers·facts: "1,238 people applied this week"
- Listicle: "N-point checklist to look at when doing OO"
- Curiosity negative statement: "OO is not OO"
- Name personalization: Recipient's name = open rate +17%
- Emoji: Appropriate use = open rate ×1.5
⑥ 5 ways to raise click-through rates
- Inverted triangle structure: Text → image → CTA button (focus attention)
- One CTA principle: No multiple buttons, focus on 1 click
- Button color contrast difference: Strong contrast with the background
- Mobile-first design: Over 49% view on mobile
- Body under 500 characters: Short and impactful
⑦ Sequence D+ standard structure (Korean SaaS·D2C)
| Timing | Purpose | CTA |
|---|---|---|
| D+0 | Welcome·onboarding (open rate ×2.5) | Experience 1 core feature |
| D+1 | Value reinforcement | Tutorial·guide |
| D+3 | Social proof | Reviews·cases |
| D+7 | Drive first payment | Limited benefit |
| D+14 | Become an active user | Advanced features |
| D+21 | Re-engagement | Retention content |
| D+30 | Reactivation OR graduation | Incentive OR unsubscribe |
Korea Information and Communications Network Act Article 50 checklist (2025 update)
In case of violation, fines up to 30 million won. Korea may be stricter than global standards (GDPR·CCPA) separately.
- Consent to receive advertising information explicit prior consent (spam-style opt-out prohibited)
- At the start of the email subject line,
(광고)mark - Sender name·address·phone number in the body
- Guidance on free unsubscribe method (no cost burden)
- Notification of unsubscribe processing result
- Periodic (2 years) reconfirmation of consent to receive
- Prohibition of sending advertisements at night (21:00–08:00 the next day) (separate prior consent required)
- Separate processing of consent under the Personal Information Protection Act and consent under the Information and Communications Network Act §50 (no mixing)
SPF·DKIM·DMARC deliverability basics
Email forgery verification — if not set up, it goes straight to the spam filter. For Korean domains, automatic setup is possible when using sending tools (Stibee, Mailplug, Mailchimp). If running SMTP directly, register 3 types of TXT records in DNS.
Comparison of Korean Email Sending Tools (2025)
| Tool | Strengths | Price Range |
|---|---|---|
| Stibee | Korea-optimized, UI-friendly, rich KR statistics | Free–₩30K per month |
| Mailchimp | Global standard, powerful automation | $0-$300+ |
| Mailplug | Mass sending for Korean companies | 월 ₩50K+ |
| Channel Talk / Kakao Channel | Messenger-integrated CRM | Separate |
Brand Utilization Trends (Stibee 2025)
- Main purposes of email marketing: Driving visits to own mall/homepage 72.2%
- Most frequently sent type: Newsletter 88.9% (regular delivery of brand, product, and event updates)
💡 Top causes of failure in Korean email marketing: (1) Non-compliance with the Information and Communications Network Act → fines (2) Manual bulk sending without automation (3) Failure to follow the dominant timing of Monday, Friday, and Tuesday (4) Mixed handling of personal information and advertising receipt consent. Just setting up automation + a welcome sequence well can be 2-4 times more effective than regular sending.
Workflow
Step 1: Confirm sequence purpose and target
Select the sequence type (welcome/onboarding, drip nurturing, reactivation, promotion, newsletter), define the target segment, and set the conversion goal.
Step 2: Legal compliance check (required)
Check the mandatory items for compliance with Article 50 of the Information and Communications Network Act:
- Explicit prior consent from the recipient to receive advertising information
- At the beginning of the email subject line,
(광고)mark - State the sender's name, address, and phone number in the body
- Provide a free opt-out method
- Notify the result when processing opt-outs
- Regularly reconfirm whether consent to receive is maintained
Step 3: Design the sequence structure
Define the timing and purpose of email sends for each stage, such as D+0, D+1, D+3, D+7, D+14, D+21, D+30. Design the key message and CTA for each stage.
Step 4: Write the email body
Apply the AIDA principle (Attention-Interest-Desire-Action) to write the subject line (within 30 characters), preheader (within 40 characters), body (recommended within 500 characters), CTA (one-button principle), and footer (sender information, opt-out link).
Step 5: Set performance metrics and plan A/B tests
Set open rate targets (B2B 25-35%, B2C 15-25%), click-through rate targets (2.5-5%), and conversion rate targets. Plan A/B test items (subject line, send time, CTA button copy).
Usage Examples
Example 1: "Create a 7-step onboarding email sequence for new SaaS product signups" → Legal check → Sequence structure → Draft email for each step → Sending schedule
Example 2: "Design a 3-stage reactivation drip campaign for customers inactive for 90 days or more" → Segment definition → Reactivation sequence → Incentive offer → Final unsubscribe handling
Output format
- Sequence flow diagram (triggers and conditions per stage)
- Draft body copy for each email (including subject lines)
- Information and Communications Network Act compliance checklist
- Performance measurement KPI dashboard design
- Unsubscribe handling process document
Precautions
| Situation | Response |
|---|---|
| When there is no customer data or segment information | Compose a general sequence based on industry and goals. Recommend segmentation after securing actual data |
| When legal requirements are unclear | Design based on conservative standards (separate consent to receive advertising). Recommend review by the legal team |
| When the sending tool has not been decided | Recommend tools based on scale and budget, then adjust the design direction accordingly |
Post-processing (required chain)
Each stage's email body, subject line, preheader, etc. Text deliverablesmust go through the post-processing chain before sending. Structural and numerical deliverables such as sequence flow diagrams and KPI tables are not subject to this.
