About this skill

Thought Leadership Content — Long-form Personal Brand

Long-form text to buy trust and build authority — DIFFERENT from sales ad copy (skill 05). This skill does not sell directly, but builds expert positioning through value content.

1. For beginners (Newbie section)

What is long-form?

Long-form = articles >500 words (LinkedIn, personal FB, Newsletter) with structure, guiding the reader's thinking from A to Z. Different from short-form (caption <100 words) and ad copy (125-character hook + closing CTA).

Differences from the other 2 formats

Criteria Short-form (caption) Ad copy (skill 05) Long-form (skill 26)
Goal Fast engagement Close orders, CPMess Build authority, buy trust
Length <100 words 125-500 characters 500-3000 words
CTA Comment / Like Message / Buy now Soft CTA or no CTA
Frequency 5-7 posts/week According to ads budget 2-3 posts/week
Audience Cold + warm Targeted ads Organic follower
Success measure Reach, like ROAS, CPA Save, share, DM, in-depth comment

When to write long-form

  1. After the awareness stage — already have 500-1000 quality followers
  2. Want to position as an expert — not just a seller but a teacher
  3. Have real experience — have failed, have worked on big projects, have managed teams
  4. Have private time — 30-60 minutes/post, hard to write, carefully edited
  5. Have a clear audience persona — understand the reader's situation (founder, coach, creator, etc.).

Time investment

  • 30-60 minutes/post for people with writing experience
  • 2-3 posts/week is a sustainable pace — should not force 5 posts/week right from the start
  • Batch writing — spend 1 session (3-4 hours) writing 4-5 posts for the whole week, more effective than writing individually

5 common mistakes

  1. Too long without structure — writing ramblingly, 10-line paragraphs, no rhythm
  2. No story — only listing dry insights, no evidence from real life
  3. Selling too early — paragraph 2 already inserts "my course 9.9m" → audience leaves
  4. Copying gurus — mixing in a Google-translated English tone, not fitting the VN market
  5. No hook — generic line 1 "Today I want to share about..." → skipped

2. Information gathering

Ask at most 4 questions before writing:

  1. Which platform? LinkedIn (B2B, formal), personal FB (mass, casual), Newsletter (deep, owned audience)
  2. Which pillar? 1 of 4 content pillars from skill 23 (Authority / Story / Lesson / Personal). If no context yet → call skill 22-23 first
  3. Goal of the post? Awareness (reach new people), Trust (current warm followers), Authority (positioning as an industry expert)
  4. Audience persona? SME Founder / 1-1 Coach / Creator / Agency Marketer / Other. Be specific about age, main pain point, what they are doing wrong

3. 3 Standard VN Long-form Structures

3.1. PAS-Insight (Founder pattern)

Formula: Problem → Agitate → Solve + Industry Insight

Different from regular PAS (skill 05): there is an extra layer of Insight at the end — elevating the problem from personal to industry-level wisdom. Founders use it to share operating experience, not to sell directly.

When to use: Posts sharing strategic thinking, lessons from the company, industry trend forecasts.

Full example (200 words):

I just fired an employee after 6 months. Not because of poor ability.

He worked well. Met deadlines. Clients praised him. But he never asked the question "why".

6 months, 4 times I gave him big projects. 4 times the output met the "requirements" but missed the "goal". When I explained, he fixed it. Next time he made the same mistake the same way.

I realized: hiring people who are good at DOING is not enough. You have to hire people who are good at ASKING.

3 questions I ask in every interview starting next month:

  1. "When was the last time you asked yourself 'why' on a recent project?"
  2. "When was the last time you pushed back on your boss? What was the result?"
  3. "What did you learn from the last time you were wrong?"

Insight: Marketing in 2026 does not lack people who write copy. It lacks people who ask: "Why is this copy still not closing?". Whoever only writes — gets replaced by AI. Whoever knows how to ask — gets paid 3x.

3.2. Story-Lesson-CTA (Coach pattern)

Formula: Personal Story → Lesson Learned → Soft CTA (no hard sell)

Coaches use this pattern: tell a personal story → draw out an applicable lesson → soft CTA ("Have you been in a similar situation? Comment and share").

When to use: Posts sharing your personal journey, transformation, methodology.

Full example (200 words):

In 2022, a client asked for a refund after 1 coaching session.

I was furious. I had prepared 4 hours for that session. Beautiful slides. Great framework. The client also kept nodding along.

The client responded: "I feel like you talked too much. I need someone to listen to me, not someone to teach me."

I thought about it for 3 days. Reread my 12 pages of notes. Came to one adjustment:

In the next 60-minute session, I spoke for 12 minutes and asked questions for 48 minutes. Silence: 0 minutes, not counted.

That client did not proceed with the refund. They bought another 8-session package and referred 3 friends.

Lesson: A bad coach is a coach who talks a lot. A great coach is a coach who asks deeply. The customer already has the answer — they need someone to help them SEE it.

Have you ever heard a customer say "you talk too much"? Comment and share your experience.

3.3. Hook-List-Reveal (Creator pattern)

Formula: Strong Hook → Numbered List (3-5 items) → Final Reveal/Twist

Creators use this pattern because it's easy to scan on mobile, easy to save/share. The last item must have a twist — making the reader surprised and share.

When to use: Listicle posts, "X ways to do Y", "X signs of Z" — the pattern with the highest reach on LinkedIn 2026.

Full example (200 words):

After auditing 47 LinkedIn pages of VN Founders over 90 days, I found 5 signs that kill a personal brand:

1. Banner copying the words "Founder | CEO | Visionary" No one searches these 3 words. Banner = SEO billboard, not a name card.

2. Headline with no numbers "Helping companies grow" loses. "Helped 200+ SMEs scale 3x in 18 months" is specific.

3. Empty Featured section Customer clicks into profile, scrolls down → sees no proof → leaves. 90 seconds decides trust.

4. Posts that only share news links LinkedIn's 2026 algorithm penalizes news links by 70%. Quote the article and add 200 words of opinion → 5x the reach.

5. No specific audience in the bio "I help everyone" = "I help no one". The bio must mention the audience NAME: "I help B2B SaaS founders..."

Final reveal: I thought mistake #1 was the most dangerous. Wrong. Mistake #5 — NOT defining the audience — is the root cause of the other 4 mistakes. Fix mistake #5 first, the other 4 fix themselves.

4. 6 Long-form Hook Formulas

DIFFERENT from short-form hooks (see references/hook-formulas-vn.md for ads/video). Long-form hooks need to build deeper curiosity, leading the reader to continue for 800-3000 words.

Hook 1: Controversial Question

Formula: A controversial question, daring to challenge popular beliefs.

"Why do 99% of VN Founders get it wrong when hiring a CMO?"

Why it works: the question → forces thinking. "99%" → specific. "wrong" → creates tension. Readers want to know whether they're in that 1%.

Hook 2: Contrarian Opinion

Formula: A statement that flips the trend + "Here's why."

"I believe LinkedIn is dying in VN. Here's why."

Why it works: goes against market consensus → curiosity. The words "I believe" → opinion-led, not claiming confidence. "Here's why" → promises an explanation.

Hook 3: Mini-Confession

Formula: Share a hard-to-say action/decision + lesson.

"I had to fire 5 people last week. Here's the lesson."

Why it works: vulnerable → builds trust. "Fire" → high-stakes. "5 people" → specific. "Last week" → freshness, not an old story.

Hook 4: Framework Drop

Formula: Framework name + result + audience size.

"I used the 3-7-21 framework to help 200 businesses raise salaries."

Why it works: framework = systematic = expert. "3-7-21" → memorable. "200 businesses" → social proof. The audience wants to know what that framework is.

Hook 5: Data Drop

Formula: After [analyzing/auditing/doing] X, here are Y findings.

"After analyzing 500 Vietnamese startups, here are 3 signs that kill a business."

Why it works: research-led → authority. "500" → not a personal opinion. "3 signs" → a listicle promise that's easy to scan. "Kill business" → high stakes.

Hook 6: Character-driven Story

Formula: Ms./Mr. [specific character] [unusual action] → unexpected result.

"There's this student who kept starting a bubble tea business. 18 months later, she has 3 stores."

Why it works: specific character → story-mode brain. Action "starting a business" → quirky. Result "3 stores" → curiosity about how. Readers want to know the secret.

Hook selection table by platform

Hook LinkedIn FB Personal Newsletter
Controversial question GREAT OK GREAT
Contrarian opinion GREAT GREAT GREAT
Mini-confession OK GREAT GREAT
Framework drop GREAT OK GREAT
Data drop GREAT OK GREAT
Character-driven OK GREAT GREAT

5. Sentence Rhythm Engineering

Long-form differs from short-form in sentence rhythm — it must rise and fall, not be uniform.

The 1-2-3 rule

Short sentences + long sentences alternating in a pattern:

  • Sentence 1: 5-8 words (impact)
  • Sentence 2: 10-15 words (explanation)
  • Sentence 3: 15-25 words (detail, expansion)
  • Repeat the pattern every 3-5 sentences

White space rules

  • 1 line break between paragraphs — no 10-line block of text
  • Paragraphs of 2-3 sentences — don't write 8-sentence paragraphs
  • List/bullet every 200-300 words to break up long content
  • Bold 3-5 key phrases every 500 words — don't bold entire sentences

Before/After example

Before (bad, no rhythm):

During the process of building a personal brand, there are many factors to pay attention to, especially clearly identifying the target audience and your core values so that you can thereby convey the message effectively and build trust with followers in a sustainable way.

After (good, has rhythm):

Building a personal brand is hard.

Everyone thinks they have to know "who the audience is" and "what the value is" from the start. Wrong.

I spent 18 months writing 200 posts before understanding my audience. Not everyone who says it knows — you have to write, make mistakes, fix, repeat.

The real audience = the people who comment 3 times or more within 90 days.

Compare: 70 words in the first version even, flat, no rhythm. 75 words in the later version has a 3-word sentence (impact), a 15-word sentence (detail), a 30-word sentence (expansion) — rising and falling for readability.

Rhythm check question

Read it aloud. If you feel your breath running out between paragraphs → the sentence is too long. If it sounds choppy, choppy → the sentences are too short and even. Good is the feeling of rising and falling.

6. Format By Platform

Platform Char/Word count Para length Hashtags Image Best post time
LinkedIn 1300-3000 char 2-3 lines 3-5 Optional carousel 8 slides 8-10 AM weekday
FB Personal 500-1500 words 3-5 lines 0 Yes (1 photo) 7-9 PM
Newsletter 800-2000 words 3-5 lines N/A 1-2 inline images Tuesday/Thursday

Algorithm preferences

LinkedIn 2026:

  • Prioritize dwell time > like — write long enough to be read for 30s+
  • Comments of 5+ words within the first hour → boost reach 3-5x
  • External links → a 70% reduction in reach. Solution: put the link in the first comment
  • Carousel slide format = document upload PDF → 3x the reach of plain text.

FB Personal 2026:

  • Prioritize comment threads — a post with 50+ comments > a post with 500 likes
  • Tag <3 people/post → won't be flagged as spam
  • A real photo of the writer > a stock photo → 2x the engagement.
  • Link out caps reach, losing 60% — use the first comment containing the link

Newsletter (Substack/Email):

  • Open rate > click rate in the early stage (build trust)
  • Subject <50 characters, with specificity (numbers or a question)
  • Tuesday/Thursday 8-10 AM has the highest open rate in VN
  • 1-2 inline images, no more than 5 — sluggish load

7. Repurpose Matrix 1:5

1 long-form post → 5 derivative content pieces within the next 7 days:

Workflow

Day 0: Viet 1 long-form post LinkedIn (1500 char)
Day 1: Cat thanh Twitter/X thread (10 tweets)
Day 2: Lam Carousel slide (8-10 slides Canva)
Day 3: Quay short video script 60s (TikTok/Reels)
Day 4: Convert thanh email newsletter (forward to subscriber list)
Day 7: Tom y thanh podcast talking points (5 bullets cho podcast guest)

Conversion guide

Long-form → Twitter thread:

  • Hook: line 1 of LinkedIn = tweet 1
  • Each numbered point = 1 tweet
  • Final reveal = last tweet + RT CTA
  • 10 tweets ideal, max 12

Long-form → Carousel:

  • Slide 1: Hook + your name
  • Slide 2-7: 1 point/slide (max 50 words/slide)
  • Slide 8-9: Final insight
  • Slide 10: CTA "Follow to see more posts like this"

Long-form → Short video script (60s):

  • 0-3s: Fast spoken hook (8-10 words)
  • 3-10s: Set up the problem
  • 10-45s: 2-3 main points (15s/point)
  • 45-55s: Reveal + lesson
  • 55-60s: Soft CTA ("Comment 'GUI' and I'll send you the full post")

Long-form → Newsletter:

  • Newsletter opener: that day's P.S.
  • Body: copy the long-form + add 2-3 more detailed paragraphs (subscribers deserve more)
  • End: link to the original LinkedIn post + soft CTA

Long-form → Podcast points:

  • 5 bullets for the host to ask about
  • Example from your own story (not in the post)
  • A stat or data you already have
  • 1 new framework not yet public
  • 1 controversial hot take

Repurpose rules

  1. Don't copy verbatim — rewrite each format to fit the platform's voice
  2. Stagger by 1-2 days — don't post on 5 platforms the same day
  3. Hashtags differ by platform — LinkedIn use 3-5, Twitter 1-2, FB 0
  4. Track conversion — whichever post drives the most LinkedIn → newsletter signups → make more like it

8. Authority Signal Injection + QA Score 100

5 types of authority signal

Signal Example Frequency
Numbers/data "After auditing 47 LinkedIn pages..." 1-2 times/post
Namedrop (carefully) "A Vingroup client shared..." (only with permission) <1 time/post
Frameworks/systems "I use the 3-7-21 framework..." 1 time/post
Failures shared "I laid off 5 people last week..." Vulnerability — 1/3 posts
Specific timeline "Last week, 18 months ago, Q3/2024" 1-2 times/post

Anti-pattern: Avoid using "a lot", "very big", "successful". Always replace with numbers.

QA Score 100 (10 criteria × 10 points)

Score before posting. Only post when >=80/100.

# Criterion 8-10 points 5-7 points 1-4 points
1 Hook strength 1 of 6 formulas, single-line stop scroll OK but not impressive "Today I want to..."
2 Structure clarity 1 of 3 patterns, coherent Has structure but loose Rambling, no frame
3 Authority signals 3+ signals (data/named/framework) 1-2 signals 0 signals, self-narration
4 Sentence rhythm Short/long sentences alternating 1-2-3 OK but evenly paced Block text with no rhythm
5 Platform fit Correct char count + para length Roughly correct Seriously wrong char count
6 CTA appropriate Soft CTA or no CTA CTA OK but a bit pushy Hard sell, selling
7 Story authenticity Real, has details, specific characters Has story but copied Generic "I have a friend..."
8 Lesson applicable Reader can apply right away Lesson is generic Nothing to take away
9 Engagement bait Closing question sparks healthy debate Has question but weak No question or a pointless one
10 AI disclosure Notes if AI-assisted (voluntary) N/A Denies when clearly AI
Total Action
90-100 Post now, track reach
80-89 Can post, note improvements
70-79 Fix 1-2 lowest items before posting
<70 Rewrite from the hook

Each post, add final line: QA Score: [X]/100 — [Danh gia].
