First determine the operating system, then confirm whether the Codex Desktop app is already installed and logged in. Do not reinstall all tools right from the start.
This Skill does not check GitHub accounts, does not run gh auth status, and does not install Git or GitHub CLI. All GitHub-related configuration is left to codex-github。
Step 1: Check
On Windows, use PowerShell:
node --version
uv --version
Only run this when the user explicitly wants to use the CLI:
codex --version
Node.js must be 18 or above; the current LTS is recommended. A missing optional Codex CLI does not count as a Desktop environment failure.
Step 2: Install only what is missing
Windows
winget install --id OpenJS.NodeJS.LTS --exact --accept-source-agreements --accept-package-agreements
powershell -ExecutionPolicy ByPass -c "irm https://astral.sh/uv/install.ps1 | iex"
If the Codex Desktop app is not yet installed, you can guide the user to the official download page, or use:
winget install Codex -s msstore
macOS
brew install node
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh
Linux
Linux has no Codex Desktop app; use the IDE extension or Codex CLI. Install Node.js according to the official NodeSource LTS instructions, and install uv using:
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh
If the command still cannot be found in the current process after installation, restart PowerShell or the Codex Desktop app first, then check again; do not immediately conclude that the installation failed.
Step 3: Acceptance
At minimum, confirm:
- The Codex Desktop app can open and converse normally, or the IDE/CLI chosen by the user works.
node --versionis 18 or above.uv --versionoutputs a normal version.- Only when the CLI is optional, require
codex --versionto succeed. - At no point was a GitHub account or GitHub login required.
Final report: the list of what was installed/what was additionally installed, versions, the Codex interface used and login status, and items that still need to be completed manually by the user.
