A skill for designing paid/free structure for note serial articles. Use it in combination with the ai-interview-article skill (interview-style article creation).
As a serial monetization design advisor, you propose the placement of free/paid content, the position of the paid line, and pricing.
Basic Principles
Separation of Roles Between Free and Paid
| Category | Role | Reader Psychology |
|---|---|---|
| Free Content | Attracting readers, building trust, establishing "I want to learn from this person" | "Interesting, I want to read more" |
| Paid Content | Monetization, providing deep value, primary information unavailable elsewhere | "You can only read this here, it's worth paying for" |
Iron rule: The free portion alone must be substantial enough to be worth reading. A stingy free portion will not serve as a path to the paid content.
Follower Count and Sales Do Not Correlate
You must not judge the timing of monetization by follower count. Facts shown by actual data:
- There is a case where a paid article sold with 13 followers on the 3rd day after opening
- There is a case where it was purchased 60 times with 76 followers
- There is a case where it sold on the first day with 17 followers
- Conversely, there are cases where paid articles barely sell even with 5,000 or more followers
What determines purchase is not follower count but:
- Scarcity of the content — Whether there is primary information that "can only be read here"
- External traffic paths — Whether it reaches "people who need it" via search or social media
- Quality of the free portion — Whether readers can have trust and expectations
Important: If you monetize after your followers increase, you become fixed in their perception as "a free person," and there is a risk of mass unfollowing when you monetize. It is more advantageous in the long term to be recognized from the start as "a person who also writes paid articles."
Design Layers
Layer 1: Placement of Free/Paid Installments Across the Serial
Design each installment of the serial as free or paid.
Pattern A: First installment free → subsequent installments paid (recommended, simplest)
- Create "I want to read the continuation" in installment 1
- The quality of installment 1 determines everything. If this is weak, the paid installments will not sell
- Always include in installment 1 a presentation of the benefits of what can be gained in the paid installments
Pattern B: Alternating type (when you want to continue attracting readers)
...
- Free installments are regularly spread on social media, continuously bringing in new readers
- Set up a lead-in to paid installments at the end of every free installment
- Because management becomes complicated, for cases where the series will be long-running
Pattern C: Magazine Bulk Type
- Offer both individual purchase and magazine purchase
- Readers who start reading midway can buy the whole collection via the magazine
Decision Flow
│ ├─ YES → パターンA or B(外部から有料回へ直接流入が見込める)
Don't judge by follower count. Most buyers aren't followers; they're people who found the article via search or social media.
Layer 2: Designing the Paid Line Within a Single Article
Where within a single article to draw the "paid from here" line.
The 3 elements needed in the free area (based on note's official analysis of 100 cases)
| Element | Role | Example |
|---|---|---|
| (A) Empathy / Question | Make them feel "this article is aimed at me" | "Have you ever wanted to have AI create a stand-in for yourself?" |
| (B) Story of Change | Draw interest with Before/After | "When I broke down 15 years of a composing career into 15 items, I saw something" |
| (C) Presenting Benefits | Clearly state what can be gained in the paid section | "In this article, I'll share the actual design document for the cognitive model and the results of feeding it to AI" |
Where to Place the Paid Line
Principle: Place it at the point where the reader "can't turn back after reading this far."
Common failures:
- The free section is too short → value isn't conveyed and readers leave
- Showing everything in the free section → there's no reason to buy the paid section
- No notice right before the paid line → "Wait, you're cutting it off here?" and distrust
Designing the Paid Line in Interview Format
When used together with the ai-interview-article skill:
[無料] 導入の対話(問題提起、読者の共感を呼ぶやりとり)
[無料] 核心に触れる1つのやりとり(「発見」を見せる)
[無料] 質問者が「それ、もう少し詳しく聞いていいですか?」
--- 有料ライン ---
[有料] 詳細な対話(設計書の中身、具体的なプロセス、数字)
[有料] FAQ
[有料] 導線
You can draw the paid line naturally within the flow of dialogue. The interviewer's "tell me a little more" becomes the bridge to the paid section.
Layer 3: Pricing Design
Guideline for Initial Pricing
| Rarity of content | Recommended price range | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| General know-how organization | 100–300 yen | Below the threshold for an impulse buy |
| Original experience / firsthand information | 480–980 yen | The median range for note paid articles |
| Irreproducible expert knowledge / design documents | 980–1,980 yen | Compensation for "something you can only read here" |
| Comprehensive guide / with templates | 1,980–4,980 yen | The value of one book |
Price Change Strategy
- Set it low at firstto lower the hurdle for purchase
- Observe readers' reactions andraise the price in stages(note allows price changes even after publication)
- When raising the price, clearly state the reason, such as "Added additional information"
- Early buyers could purchase at a lower price = this becomes an incentive for early purchase
Magazine pricing
- Compared with the total of individual purchases,20–30% offis the guideline
- If it is a series of 3 or more installments, consider making it into a magazine
Design checklist
Check before publishing an article.
Series design
- Is the placement pattern for free and paid installments decided?
- Does the first installment (free installment) have a device that makes readers want to read more?
- Are the benefits of the paid installments previewed in the free installment?
Paid line within one article
- Does the free area contain at least 2 of the 3 elements: "empathy," "change," and "benefit"?
- Is the free area alone substantial enough to read (are you not being stingy)?
- Is it clearly stated immediately before the paid line what can be gained beyond it?
- Does the paid area contain primary information that can only be read here?
Price
- Is the price range appropriate for the rarity of the content?
- Is the price set with the purchase hurdle taken into account for the first time?
- Is there room left for a price increase?
Coordination with the ai-interview-article skill
This skill handles the "structure and monetization design" of articles, and the ai-interview-article skill handles the "content and quality" of articles.
Workflow when used together:
- With this skill, design the free/paid placement for the entire series
- ai-interview-articlepass each installment through the quality gates (discovery, external anchor, one-sentence test)
- With this skill, design the paid line within one article
- ai-interview-articlecreate the article body according to the format rules
- With this skill,do a final check using the design checklist
Relationship with the quality gates:
- Articles that do not pass the ai-interview-article quality gates will not sell even if made paid
- Conversely, even articles that pass the quality gates will not be purchased if the paid line design is poor
- Only by passing both do they become "paid articles that sell"
