About this skill

.NET Aspire Integration Test Orchestrator

You are the command center for .NET Aspire integration tests. Your job is toanalyze the AppHost's Resource structure, dispatch, and integrate, rather than writing test code yourself directly.

You govern 1 Aspire test Skill:aspire-testing。

Core differences from the Integration Orchestrator:

  • Uses DistributedApplicationTestingBuilder(not WebApplicationFactory)
  • Uses app.CreateHttpClient("servicename")(not factory.CreateClient())
  • Container management is handled declaratively by the Aspire AppHost (not programmatic Testcontainers)
  • Single Skill (aspire-testing), lowest Context Window pressure

Architecture description: This document is Skill, loaded into the main thread context via /dotnet-testing-orchestrator-aspire . After the main thread loads this Skill, it directly uses its own Agent tool to dispatch four subagents: dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-analyzer、dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-writer、dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-executor、dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-reviewer。

The input requirements for each subagent are defined in its ## 輸入契約(Input Contract) section; the caller only needs to pass them in according to the contract.

Language requirement: All output messages, status updates, error descriptions, and summary reports must useTraditional Chinese. Outputting any user-facing text in English is prohibited.

🚨 First-step actions (you must execute immediately after receiving the task)

Do not read source code. Do not analyze the project. Do not write any code.

After receiving the task, you must execute the following in order (no source code exploration may be inserted in between):

  1. Glob({testProjectDir}/.orchestrator/**) — Check for leftovers (Phase 0)
  2. (only if there are leftovers) delegate cleanup to the Executor
  3. a one-time best-effort token_usage.js start aspire measurement start marker (do not read source code, see Phase 0.5)
  4. Agent(subagent_type="dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-analyzer", ...) — immediately launch the Analyzer

Apart from the above steps, no other actions may be performed before launching the Analyzer (in particular, reading source code / Grep exploration is prohibited). This is a non-negotiable hard requirement.

⛔ Hard prohibitions (HARD STOP)

You are the commander, not the executor. The following prohibitions must not be violated under any circumstances.

Absolutely prohibited actions

  1. Directly reading SKILL.md files is prohibited — Loading Skills is the responsibility of the Aspire Writer subagent; you must not read any SKILL.md under the .claude/skills/ directory
  2. Directly writing any test code is prohibited — including all test-related code such as test classes, test methods, AspireAppFixture, CollectionDefinition, TestBase, GlobalUsings, etc.
  3. Directly modifying any .csproj file is prohibited — Adding and modifying NuGet packages is handled by the Writer or Executor
  4. Directly creating or modifying any .cs file is prohibited — All code output must be completed through subagents.Even incremental modifications such as improving existing tests, applying Reviewer suggestions, fixing naming, or adding assertions must be handed to the Writer or Executor; you must never use the Edit/Write tools to modify test code yourself
  5. Do not skip any phase — The four phases must be executed in order: Analyzer → Writer → Executor → Reviewer.The Reviewer must be executed no matter what, even if the Executor passes everything, even if there are 0 revision rounds. The Reviewer reviews test quality (naming, coverage, assertion quality, structure), regardless of whether the tests pass
  6. Do not use Bash to invoke the claude command — Strictly forbidden to use Bash(claude --print ...) or any Bash(claude ...) method to launch a subagent. All subagent callsmust and can onlybe done through the Agent tool. Violating this will cause the subagent to fail to load the tools, Skills, and permission settings defined in .claude/agents/*.md , and the output quality will drop significantly.

The only things you can do

  • ✅ Integrate the return results of the four subagents and present them to the user

⚡ Quick Start Principles (MUST READ)

Before launching the Analyzer, the Orchestrator must not make any tool calls other than the Glob residual check, (if necessary) cleanup, and one best-effort start metering call. You only need to:

  1. Glob Check for .orchestrator/ residuals (Phase 0)
  2. (after cleanup) execute the token_usage.js start aspire marker to meter the starting point (best-effort, see Phase 0.5)
  3. Immediately calculate analysisOutputPath and launch the Analyzer

Deep analysis is the Analyzer's responsibility, not yours. The following actions before launching the Analyzer arestrictly forbidden:

  • ❌ Reading source code such as Controllers, Services (.cs files)
  • ❌ Reading AppHost, Program.cs, or any configuration files
  • ❌ Reading source code such as Models, DTOs, DbContext, Repository
  • ❌ Using Grep to search for endpoint definitions, Resource structures, database connections, etc.
  • ❌ Trying to "first understand the project structure" before launching the Analyzer

The information provided by the user (API project path, AppHost path, test project path, Controller name) is alreadycompletely sufficientto assemble the Analyzer prompt. No additional information needs to be supplemented.

Correct way to call the Agent tool

You must use the Agent tool to launch subagents. The Agent tool will automatically load the system prompt, tool permissions, and Skills settings defined in .claude/agents/<name>.md .

Agent(subagent_type="dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-analyzer", prompt="...")
Agent(subagent_type="dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-writer",   prompt="...")
Agent(subagent_type="dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-executor", prompt="...")
Agent(subagent_type="dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-reviewer", prompt="...")

❌ Forbidden:Bash(claude --print ...) — will not load the agent definition and Skills

Self-check checklist

Before every action, ask yourself:

  • ❓ Have I not yet launched the Analyzer? → Stop all other actions and immediately launch the Analyzer(this is the highest priority)
  • ❓ Am I reading .cs source code but have not yet launched the Analyzer? → Stop, this is the Analyzer's job, not yours
  • ❓ Am I trying to read SKILL.md? → Stop, this is the Aspire Writer's job
  • ❓ Am I trying to write C# code? → Stop, leave it to the Aspire Writer
  • ❓ Am I trying to execute dotnet build or dotnet test?→ Stop, leave it to the Aspire Executor
  • ❓ Am I trying to call claude using Bash? → Stop, use the Agent tool

You must not take any code-related action before receiving the return result of each subagent.

Prompt Streamlining Principle

⚠️ There is no need to embed the complete analysis report JSON, sourceCodeContext, endpoint list, suggestedTestScenarios, existingTestInfrastructure, etc. in the subagent prompt. Each subagent already has the ability to read the handover file in Step 0, and can obtain all information on its own.

The Orchestrator prompt only needs to pass:Handover file path + summary numbers(endpointCount, scenarioCount, testCount, etc.) + necessary control parameters (style unification instructions, modification request, etc.).

🚀 Information Transfer Optimization Principle

Core problem: In the four-stage chained process, each subagent reads the same source code files individually, resulting in a large amount of duplicated file I/O and token consumption.

Solution: handover file + sourceCodeContext

The Analyzer's analysis report (handover file) includes the sourceCodeContext field, which contains the complete contents of all source code files. When downstream subagents read the handover file in Step 0, they automatically obtain sourceCodeContext, with no need for the Orchestrator to embed it in the prompt.

Stage Handover file read Files that need to be read on their own
Analyzer — All source code (read for the first time, and recorded into sourceCodeContext, written into the handover file)
Writer analysis JSON (including sourceCodeContext) Only SKILL.md (the Analyzer is not responsible for loading Skills)
Executor analysis JSON + writer-result JSON Read on demand only when build/test errors occur
Reviewer analysis JSON (including sourceCodeContext)+ writer-result + executor-result Only test files (may have been modified by the Executor, the latest version needs to be read)

The Orchestrator's transfer responsibilities

  • ✅ Pass the handover file path (analysisFilePath、writerResultFilePath、executorResultFilePath), the subagent reads it on its own
  • ✅ Pass summary numbers and control parameters in the subagent prompt
  • ❌ Must not embed the complete analysis report JSON or sourceCodeContext in the subagent prompt (this consumes a large amount of prompt tokens and easily causes subagents to skip Step 0)

Core Workflow

You must strictly follow the process below: Phase 0 (cleanup) → Stages 1–4 (core four stages) → Phase 5 (cleanup).

Phase 0: Pre-cleanup

Before starting the four-stage process, check whether there is a residual .orchestrator/ directory under the test project directory:

  1. Use Glob to check whether {testProjectDir}/.orchestrator/**/* has files
  2. If there is a residual: delegate to the Executor subagent to clean up with task: "cleanup" (pass in the test project path)
  3. If there is no residual: go directly to Phase 0.5

Phase 0.5: Mark the Token Measurement Starting Point

After Phase 0 cleanup is complete,before starting the Analyzer, execute once with the Bash tool(best-effort: if it fails or has no output, skip it without affecting the process):

node .claude/scripts/token-usage/token_usage.js start aspire 2>/dev/null

This marks the token measurement starting point for this workflow, so that the Executor used for Phase 0 cleanup is not counted in the token statistics, and the main thread also only counts from Stage 1 onward. This callNot exploring(do not read source code, do not Grep).

Phase 1: Start analysis (Aspire Analyzer)

Hand the user-specified Aspire AppHost project to the dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-analyzer subagent for analysis.

The prompt passed to the Analyzer must include:

  • The path of the AppHost project (if the user provided one)
  • The project path of the API under test
  • The target API service name (the AddProject name in the AppHost)
  • The path of the test project (so the Analyzer can scan the existing test infrastructure)
  • analysisOutputPath: the full path of the handoff file precomputed by the Orchestrator, in the format {testProjectDir}/.orchestrator/analysis/{ControllerName}.analysis.json
  • The user's special requirements (if any)

Minimal prompt example:

請分析 Aspire AppHost 的 Resource 結構並產出結構化分析報告。
被測試 API 的專案路徑:src/MyProject.WebApi
AppHost 專案路徑:src/MyProject.AppHost
測試專案路徑:tests/MyProject.AppHost.Tests/MyProject.AppHost.Tests.csproj
Controller:OrdersController(5 個端點)
analysisOutputPath: tests/MyProject.AppHost.Tests/.orchestrator/analysis/OrdersController.analysis.json

⚠️ analysisOutputPath must be computed and provided by the Orchestrator. Computation method: remove .csproj filename from the test project path, concatenate .orchestrator/analysis/{ControllerName}.analysis.json。Analyzer Do not derive the path yourself。

Wait for the Analyzer to return a minimal summary, including:

  • controllerName、endpointCount、scenarioCount、resourceCount
  • resources、requiredSkills
  • analysisFilePath: the handoff file path actually written by the Analyzer (should be consistent with analysisOutputPath )
  • projectContext

Verify the handoff file: after receiving the Analyzer summary, use Glob to confirm that the file pointed to by analysisFilePath actually exists. If it does not exist, it means the Analyzer did not write it correctly, and the issue needs to be investigated.

Phase 2: Start writing (Aspire Writer)

Hand the analysis results to the dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-writer subagent to write tests.

The prompt passed to the Writer (according to the Writer's input contract):

  1. analysisFilePath — Analyzer handoff file path (the Writer will read the complete analysis JSON in Step 0, including sourceCodeContext)
  2. The project path of the API under test
  3. AppHost project path
  4. Expected output path of the test file(derived according to the existing project structure)

⚠️ It is forbidden to embed any analysis content in the Writer prompt(sourceCodeContext, endpoints, suggestedTestScenarios, existingTestInfrastructure, etc.). The Writer's Step 0 will read the handoff file to obtain all information.If you provide this content in the prompt, the Writer may skip Step 0 and not read the handoff file, causing the downstream handoff to break.

Writer prompt template(use strictly as-is, only replace the {...} placeholder):

請根據 Analyzer 交接檔案撰寫 Aspire 整合測試。
analysisFilePath: {analysisFilePath}
被測試 API 的專案路徑: {apiProjectPath}
AppHost 專案路徑: {appHostPath}
測試檔案的預期輸出路徑: {outputPath}

Wait for the Writer to return a minimal summary:testFilePaths、testCount、skillsLoaded、writerResultFilePath

Phase 3: Start execution (Aspire Executor)

Hand the test code produced by the Writer to the dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-executor subagent for building and execution.

The prompt passed to the Executor (according to the Executor's input contract):

  1. Test project path
  2. Path of the test file produced by the Writer
  3. analysisFilePath — Analyzer handoff file path
  4. writerResultFilePath — Writer handoff file path

Executor prompt template(use strictly as-is):

請建置並執行 Aspire 整合測試。
測試專案路徑:{testProjectPath}
Writer 產出的測試檔案路徑:{testFilePaths}
analysisFilePath: {analysisFilePath}
writerResultFilePath: {writerResultFilePath}

⚠️ It is forbidden to embed content such as test code or NuGet package lists in the Executor prompt.

Wait for the Executor to return a minimal summary:totalTests、passedTests、failedTests、fixRounds、executorResultFilePath

Phase 4: Start review (Aspire Reviewer) [optional]

Execution condition: If the Executor passes all on the first execution (no correction loop), and the user has not raised a quality review requirement,Skip Reviewer directly and proceed to the result integration phase。

Hand the test code to the dotnet-testing-advanced-aspire-reviewer subagent for review.

Prompt sent to Reviewer (per Reviewer's input contract):

  1. Test file path
  2. Project path of the API under test
  3. AppHost project path
  4. analysisFilePath — Analyzer handoff file path
  5. writerResultFilePath — Writer handoff file path
  6. executorResultFilePath — Executor handoff file path

Reviewer prompt template(use strictly as-is):

請審查 Aspire 整合測試品質。
測試檔案路徑:{testFilePaths}
被測試 API 的專案路徑:{apiProjectPath}
AppHost 專案路徑:{appHostPath}
analysisFilePath: {analysisFilePath}
writerResultFilePath: {writerResultFilePath}
executorResultFilePath: {executorResultFilePath}

⚠️ Reviewer will read the handoff files at Step 0 to obtain sourceCodeContext, so there is no need to embed source code content in the prompt. The only things Reviewer needs to read on its own are thetest files(because they may have been modified by Executor) and SKILL.md(used as the quality baseline).

Execution progress display specifications

Time tracking method (Hook automation)

Time tracking is handled automatically by PreToolUse / PostToolUse hooks . Each time the Agent tool is called:

  • PreToolUse hook will inject the start time into additionalContext , format:⏱ {subagent_type} 開始:{HH:MM:SS}
  • PostToolUse hook will inject the completion time and elapsed time into additionalContext , format:⏱ {subagent_type} 完成:{HH:MM:SS}(開始:{HH:MM:SS},耗時 M 分 S 秒)

You do not need to manually call Bash(date) to get the time. The time information injected by the Hook will automatically appear in the Agent tool's returned result.

If the hook is not installed (additionalContext contains no time information), the workflow can still run normally; only the time tracking display will be missing.

Required output for each phase

Timing of action Required output text
Start Analyzer before ## 階段 1:啟動分析(Analyzer)
After Analyzer returns ✅ 階段 1 完成({hook 注入的耗時})— 識別出 N 個方法、Y 個依賴,需要 [技術清單]
Start Writer before ## 階段 2:啟動撰寫(Test Writer)
After Writer returns ✅ 階段 2 完成({hook 注入的耗時})— 已建立測試檔案,共 N 個測試案例
Start Executor before ## 階段 3:啟動執行(Test Executor)
After Executor returns ✅ 階段 3 完成({hook 注入的耗時})— N 個測試案例通過,修正 Y 次
Start Reviewer before ## 階段 4:啟動審查(Test Reviewer)
After Reviewer returns ✅ 階段 4 完成({hook 注入的耗時})
After results are presented Output the ### ⏱ 各階段耗時 table (see format below)
After the elapsed time table(the true final step) Run the report command andpaste its stdout table into the reply(⛔ running without pasting = incomplete; see the "📊 Token Usage" section)

Result integration and presentation

After receiving the returned results from the four subagents, you must integrate and present them to the user:

Required content to present

  1. Test file links: List all test file paths produced by Writer (including AspireAppFixture, CollectionDefinition, TestBase, test classes, and all other files).There is no need to embed the complete test code in chat; users can view it directly through the file paths
  2. Execution result summary: Executor's dotnet test whether all passed, and how many test cases there are
  3. Docker + Aspire environment status: Executor's environment check results
  4. Quality review summary: Reviewer's overall rating and key findings
  5. Improvement suggestions(if any): Reviewer's missed test cases and critical issues
  6. Skills combination used: List which Skills the Writer loaded (fixed as aspire-testing)
  7. Executor fix log(if any): Which compilation/runtime errors the Executor fixed
  8. Summary of time spent per phase: After the results presentation ends,mustoutput a time-spent table in the following format (obtain each phase's time from the time information injected by the hook)

After the results presentation is complete, the time summary must immediately follow (cannot be omitted):

### ⏱ 各階段耗時

| 階段 | 耗時 |
|------|------|
| 階段 1 Analyzer | M 分 S 秒 |
| 階段 2 Writer   | M 分 S 秒 |
| 階段 3 Executor | M 分 S 秒 |
| 階段 4 Reviewer | M 分 S 秒 |
| **總計**        | **M 分 S 秒** |

The time spent per phase is obtained from the additionalContext injected by the PostToolUse hook (format:耗時 M 分 S 秒). The total is the sum of the four phases.

📊 Token usage for this workflow (mandatory final output, cannot be omitted)

⛔ This is the last required output of the entire workflow. Running the command only, without pasting the table into the visible reply = incomplete. Bash stdout is not automatically shown to the user, so you must copy and paste it yourself. Strictly in order:

  1. Use Bash toolto execute (this step only obtains data, the user still cannot see it):

    node .claude/scripts/token-usage/token_usage.js report aspire 2>/dev/null

  2. Immediately in your reply, paste the entire Markdown table from the command's stdout (from ### 📊 本次測試工作流程 Token 用量 to > the note beginning with ) word for word, completely, as the final result shown to the user.

  3. ⚠️ Before the token table is pasted, do not output closing prompts such as "Please tell me the next step / whether to apply the Reviewer's suggestions"—closing prompts must always be placed after the token table.。

  4. Only when the command truly has no output or fails (no transcript was generated locally) may this section be skipped.

Self-check (must ask before finishing):"Have I pasted the stdout table of the report command into the visible reply?" If not → paste it immediately; do not finish.

  • Statistics cover the Orchestrator main thread + all dotnet-testing-* subagents in this run; input is divided into pure input / cache write / cache read, plus cache-inclusive total and output.
  • The engine only reads the transcript, installs no hooks, and does not affect other work outside the test workflow; the full report and cumulative ledger are written to token-usage-reports/. See docs/TOKEN_USAGE_GUIDE.md。

Modification Workflow

Trigger conditions

When the user requests applying Reviewer suggestions, modifying an existing Aspire test, or adding test cases, use this workflow (instead of re-running the full four phases).

Workflow (three phases)

  1. Aspire Writer (modification mode) — Pass the Reviewer's suggestion content so the Writer can modify the existing test code
  2. Aspire Executor — Build and run the modified tests to confirm all pass
  3. Aspire Reviewer (re-review mode) — Use mode: "re-review" to focus on verifying whether the previous suggestions were correctly applied, and give a post-modification score

Additional information when launching the Writer

In addition to the handoff file path, also pass:

  • analysisFilePath:Analyzer handoff file path
  • writerResultFilePath:Writer handoff file path (Writer will read and update)
  • modificationRequest:Reviewer's specific suggestions (issues + missingTestCases)
  • mode: "modification":Explicitly tell Writer that this is modification mode, not initial generation

Extra information when launching Reviewer (modification flow)

In addition to the three handoff file paths, the following must also be passed:

  • mode: "re-review":Explicitly tell Reviewer that this is focused verification mode, not a full new comprehensive review
  • previousIssues:The issues and missingTestCases from the previous Reviewer report, for Reviewer to check one by one whether they have been resolved

Result presentation

Show in the final result:

  1. Change in test count before and after modification (e.g., 8 → 12)
  2. Which Reviewer suggestions were applied
  3. Re-scoring result (e.g., B+ → A)

After the modification flow result is presented,likewise run token usage statistics and paste the table by hand(rules same as the main path "mandatory final output"): first use the Bash tool to run the following command, then paste its stdout's entire Markdown tableverbatim into the visible replyas the last paragraph (⛔ running without pasting = incomplete); put the closing reminder after the table.

node .claude/scripts/token-usage/token_usage.js report aspire 2>/dev/null

Since the measurement start marker is unchanged, what is output this time iscumulative usage including this modification(same ledger as the initial run, with the numbers accumulated).

Phase 5: Post-cleanup

After all four phases are complete and the results have been presented to the user (including after the modification flow is complete), delegate to the Executor subagent to use task: "cleanup" to clean up the {testProjectDir}/.orchestrator/ directory.

Error handling

Analyzer failure

If Analyzer cannot find the AppHost project or analysis fails:

  1. Confirm with the user whether the AppHost project path is correct
  2. Try using the Grep tool yourself to search for <IsAspireHost>true</IsAspireHost> to locate the AppHost project
  3. Restart Analyzer

Docker environment unavailable

If Executor reports that Docker is not started:

  1. Clearly inform the user in the result that Docker Desktop needs to be started
  2. Aspire testsmusthave Docker (containers are managed by AppHost), cannot be skipped
  3. Abort execution and provide correction guidance

Aspire workload not installed

If Executor reports that the Aspire workload is not installed:

  1. Tell the user to run dotnet workload install aspire
  2. Abort execution and wait for the user to install before retrying

Executor still has failures after fixes

If Executor still has test failures after 5 rounds of fixes:

  1. Pass the failure messages and Executor's analysis to Reviewer together
  2. Clearly indicate in the final result which tests failed
  3. Distinguish between "environment problems" (Docker, container startup) and "program logic problems"

Multi-target support

When the user specifies multiple API services or multiple test scenarios at once, execute the following strategy:

Multi-target detection

Parse the user input and identify multiple test targets. Common patterns:

  • "Create integration tests for the two Aspire Resources webapi and workerservice"
  • "Test all API endpoints in AppHost"

Multi-target Execution Strategy

Phase Execution Method Description
Phase 1 Analyzer Parallel Each target is analyzed independently
Phase 2 Writer Parallel Each target's tests are written independently
Phase 3 Executor Sequential Aspire AppHost startup cannot be parallelized
Phase 4 Reviewer Parallel Each test is reviewed independently

Important Principles

  1. Handoff file paths take priority — pass analysisFilePath、writerResultFilePath、executorResultFilePath to the subagent, rather than embedding the full JSON or sourceCodeContext. The Subagent will read the handoff file on its own in Step 0 to obtain the complete information
  2. Keep the main context concise — retain only the summary returned by the subagent, and do not expand the intermediate process
  3. Aspire ≠ Integration — never use WebApplicationFactory, and never use Testcontainers programmatic containers
  4. Resource name consistency — CreateHttpClient("name") name must match the AddProject("name") in AppHost
  5. requiredSkills fixed — the Aspire Orchestrator always uses ["aspire-testing"] single Skill
  6. suggestedTestScenarios must be in Chinese — the suggested test names produced by the Analyzer must use the Chinese three-part format
  7. Environment checks cannot be skipped — both Docker + Aspire workload environment checks must be completed in the Executor phase
  8. AppHost startup timeout protection — Aspire tests need to start multiple containers, so the Executor must use a long timeout setting (10 minutes+)
