Detailed Guidelines
Load guidelines.md for the full SEO audit framework. Load other references only when directly relevant to the task:
- Schema Guidelines — when adding or reviewing structured data markup
- Schema Examples — when writing specific schema implementations
- Site Architecture Guidelines — when reviewing or redesigning site structure
- Site Architecture Site Type Templates — when planning site architecture for a specific site type
- Site Architecture Navigation Patterns — when reviewing internal linking and navigation
- Site Architecture Mermaid Templates — when creating visual site maps
- AI Writing Detection — when diagnosing content quality issues related to AI-written content
- International SEO — when the site targets multiple languages or countries
Initial Assessment
Check for product marketing context first:
If .agents/product-marketing.md exists (or .claude/product-marketing.md, or the legacy product-marketing-context.md filename, in older setups), read it before asking questions. Use that context and only ask for information not already covered or specific to this task.
Before auditing, understand:
-
Site Context
- What type of site? (SaaS, e-commerce, blog, etc.)
- What's the primary business goal for SEO?
- What keywords/topics are priorities?
-
Current State
- Any known issues or concerns?
- Current organic traffic level?
- Recent changes or migrations?
-
Scope
- Full site audit or specific pages?
- Technical + on-page, or one focus area?
- Access to Search Console / analytics?
Task-Specific Questions
- What pages/keywords matter most?
- Do you have Search Console access?
- Any recent changes or migrations?
- Who are your top organic competitors?
- What's your current organic traffic baseline?
Gotchas
- Auditing without Search Console access: A technical SEO audit without Google Search Console data is surface-level at best. Crawl errors, impressions data, Core Web Vitals, and manual action notices are only visible in GSC. Always ask for or request access before starting.
- Treating all SEO issues as equally urgent: A large site may have hundreds of SEO issues. Without prioritizing by traffic impact, an agent can spend time fixing image alt text while the site has a noindex tag blocking its most important pages. Always surface critical blockers (crawlability, indexability, penalties) before cosmetic fixes.
- Recommending keyword targets without checking Search Console: Recommending keywords based only on keyword research tools misses the queries the site already ranks for in positions 5-20. Improving position 12 to position 5 is often higher-leverage than targeting net-new keywords.
