Anger damages the liver, sadness overcomes anger; joy damages the heart, fear overcomes joy; pensiveness damages the spleen, anger overcomes pensiveness; grief damages the lungs, joy overcomes grief; fear damages the kidneys, pensiveness overcomes fear. The hundred diseases arise from qi. Anger makes qi rise, joy makes qi slacken, sadness makes qi dissipate, fear makes qi descend, cold makes qi contract, heat makes qi leak out, fright makes qi become chaotic, fatigue makes qi be consumed, pensiveness makes qi bind.

I — Interpretation
Emotions are not purely psychological phenomena, but movements of qi with clear physiological directions. Each core emotion corresponds to an organ, and has a specific direction of qi movement: anger → qi rises (liver), fear → qi descends (kidneys), joy → qi slackens (heart), grief → qi dissipates (lungs), pensiveness → qi binds (spleen), fright → qi becomes chaotic. When one remains in a certain emotion for a long time, the corresponding organ will be damaged because of the imbalance in qi movement. Conversely, by using the principle of the five phases overcoming one another, one emotion can be used to restrain another emotion—sadness overcomes anger (metal overcomes wood), fear overcomes joy (water overcomes fire), anger overcomes pensiveness (wood overcomes earth), joy overcomes grief (fire overcomes metal), pensiveness overcomes fear (earth overcomes water). This is the regulatory technique of "using emotion to overcome emotion." But this is not simply "using happiness to fight sadness," but rather a strict analytical chain of emotion → organ → qi movement → regulatory strategy.
A1 — Past Application
Case 1: The physiological pathway of anger causing qi to rise
- Problem: Why anger leads to specific physical symptoms
- Use of the methodology: The Jutong Lun explains in detail: anger makes qi reverse, and in severe cases causes vomiting of blood and sunxie. The qi movement rushes upward in reverse; upward it causes vomiting of blood (qi forces blood to overflow upward), downward it causes sunxie (liver wood overacts on spleen earth)
- Conclusion: A single outburst of rage can cause both qi and blood to reverse upward (headache and red face) and digestive disorder
- Result: Formed a complete reasoning chain of "emotion → direction of qi movement → specific symptoms"
Case 2: The physiological pathway of fear causing qi to descend
- Problem: Why fear leads to lower-limb and urinary problems
- Use of the methodology: Fear makes essence retreat; when it retreats, the upper jiao closes; when it closes, qi returns; when it returns, the lower jiao distends. Fear causes essence and qi to retreat downward, the upper jiao becomes unobstructed, and qi movement all sinks downward, leading to lower abdominal distention and abnormal urination and defecation
- Conclusion: The direction of qi movement in fear is "downward and inward contraction," corresponding to excessive storing function of the kidneys
- Result: Explained the qi-movement mechanism of phenomena such as "weak legs" and "incontinence" during extreme fear
Case 3: The therapeutic technique of using emotion to overcome emotion
- Problem: How to regulate organ damage caused by excessive emotion without medication
- Use of the methodology: The Yinyang Yingxiang Dalun gives five pairs of "using emotion to overcome emotion" relationships. For example: if a person is excessively angry and damages the liver, sadness can be used to restrain it (sadness overcomes anger, metal overcomes wood); if a person is excessively pensive and damages the spleen, anger can be stimulated to break it (anger overcomes pensiveness, wood overcomes earth)
- Conclusion: Emotion itself is both a pathogenic factor and a therapeutic tool; the key is to use the five phases overcoming one another to restrain it
- Result: formed a set of purely emotional regulation therapy that does not rely on medication
A2 — Trigger Scenario (Future Trigger) ★
In what situations would a user need this skill?
- Being in a certain intense emotion for a long time (continuous anger/anxiety/sadness/fear), and physical symptoms begin to appear
- Unexplained physical discomfort appears, and there is suspicion that it may be related to a recent emotional state
- Wanting to understand what long-term effects a specific emotion can have on the body, in order to gain self-awareness
- Need to use one emotion to dissolve another excessive emotion (such as using exercise to vent anger to break through excessive rumination)
Language signals (these should activate it when they appear in the user's words)
- "I've been angry/anxious all the time lately, and I feel like my body is having problems too"
- "When my mood is bad, my body feels uncomfortable too"
- "Why do I get a headache/stomachache every time I get angry"
- "Is there a way to regulate emotions without relying on medication"
- "What effects does long-term anxiety/sadness have on the body"
- "I can't control my emotions, what should I do"
Distinction from adjacent skills
- Difference from
observation-inference: The external observation to infer internal state method infers fromexternally observable signals(complexion/pulse/sound) to infer internal states, while the emotion-organ model infers fromemotionsto infer organ states. Both are methods of inferring the internal, but the signal sources are different—the former uses physical signals, the latter uses emotional signals. - Difference from
seasonal-regimen: The emotional regulation in seasonal nurturing isadjustment according to seasonal direction(rising in spring, astringing in winter), while the emotion-organ model isanalysis of organ effects according to specific emotion types and selection of regulation strategies. The former is time-driven, the latter is emotion-driven.
E — Executable Steps (Execution)
After the skill is activated, the agent should execute the following steps:
-
Identify the user's current dominant emotion
- Completion standard: The type of emotion currently most intense and most persistent has been identified from the user's description (one or several of anger/joy/sadness/fear/rumination/fright)
-
Map to the corresponding organ and qi movement direction
- Completion standard: The dominant emotion has been mapped to the corresponding organ (anger→liver, joy→heart, sadness→lung, fear→kidney, rumination→spleen) and qi movement direction (up/down/slowed/dispersing/knotting/chaotic), and possible physical symptoms have been pointed out
-
Choose a regulation strategy (guidance or using one emotion to overcome another)
- Completion standard: Two regulation paths have been given according to the emotion type:
- Guidance: let the emotion flow naturally rather than suppress it (such as allowing sadness and crying rather than forcing oneself to cheer up)
- Using one emotion to overcome another: use the five-element overcoming relationship to choose a restraining emotion (such as sadness overcoming anger, fear overcoming joy), and explain how to safely introduce the restraining emotion
- Stop condition: If the user's emotional state is extremely unstable, it is recommended to seek professional psychological help first, and it is not recommended to use using one emotion to overcome another on one's own
- Completion standard: Two regulation paths have been given according to the emotion type:
B — Boundary ★
Do not use this skill in the following situations
- Severe mental illness (depression, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.) requires professional psychological/psychiatric intervention, and using one emotion to overcome another cannot replace treatment
- Acute physical symptoms (sudden severe headache, chest pain, etc.), even if related to emotions, should first rule out organic disease
- The user has no clear emotional background, only purely physical symptoms—do not force an emotional explanation onto every physical problem
Failure modes the author warns about in the book
- Improper use of using one emotion to overcome another may worsen the condition: using joy to suppress sadness may seem effective but can actually lead to excessive "fire overcoming metal," causing lung qi to become more deeply stagnated
- Emotion regulation is not suppression: the Suwen speaks of "overcoming," not "extinguishing"; it uses one emotion to restrain another to balance excessive emotions, rather than eliminating a certain emotion
- Among the nine qi (anger, joy, sadness, fear, cold, heat, fright, fatigue, pensiveness), cold, heat, and fatigue are not emotions but physical/behavioral factors; do not attribute all qi dynamic changes to emotions
The author's blind spots / limitations of the era
- The correspondence between emotions and zang-fu organs is based on five-phase deduction and clinical observation; modern mind-body medicine has more precise neuro-endocrine mechanistic explanations
- Using one emotion to overcome another lacks systematized operational standards and defined indications, and carries relatively high risk in practical application
- The Suwen does not distinguish normal emotional responses from pathological emotional disorders; the psychological problems faced by modern people are far more complex than in ancient times
Adjacent methodologies easily confused with it
- "Emotion management" is a concept from modern psychology, concerned withregulating emotions themselves, while the emotion-zang-fu model is concerned withthe impact of emotions on the body's zang-fu organs and the reverse use of emotions to regulate the body
- "Mind-body unity" is a philosophical stance, while the emotion-zang-fu model is a set ofoperational analytical-regulatory frameworks: emotion → zang-fu → qi dynamics → regulatory strategy, with specific correspondences at each step
Related skills (to be filled in phase 3)
- depends-on: five-elements-network — the correspondences between emotions and zang-fu organs (anger-liver-wood, joy-heart-fire, pensiveness-spleen-earth, sadness-lung-metal, fear-kidney-water) and the regulatory strategy of "using one emotion to overcome another" (sadness overcomes anger = metal overcomes wood, fear overcomes joy = water overcomes fire) are both built on the framework of five-phase generation and overcoming. Without understanding five-phase overcoming, one cannot derive the correct plan for using one emotion to overcome another.
