About this skill

Two-dimensional classification model of emotional arousal (valence x arousal)

R — Original Text (Reading)

Arousal is a state of being activated and ready to respond at any time. At this moment, your heart beats faster and blood flows faster. Physiological arousal can help the brain activate human physiological functions, mobilize one's various organs, and respond in time when danger is encountered. Anything, as long as it can activate us and form a state of physiological arousal, will move our behavior. Sad emotions are more likely to make you discouraged and depressed, and unable to devote energy to work. Although satisfaction is not a negative emotion, it makes people feel excessively comfortable, so that people are unlikely to talk about or share things related to it, because satisfaction reduces people's level of emotional arousal.

— Jonah Berger, Chapter 3 Emotion

I — Methodological Skeleton (Interpretation)

This model uses two dimensions to classify emotions and predicts the impact of different emotion types on sharing behavior:

Dimension One: Valence (Positive/Negative)—whether the emotion is positive or negative. Dimension Two: Arousal (High/Low)—whether the emotion activates the physiological system (accelerated heartbeat, elevated blood pressure).

This produces four quadrants:

  • Positive + High Arousal(awe, excitement, humor) → promotes sharing
  • Positive + Low Arousal(satisfaction, comfort) → inhibits sharing
  • Negative + High Arousal(anger, worry, anxiety) → promotes sharing
  • Negative + Low Arousal(sadness, depression) → inhibits sharing

Key insight: what determines sharing behavior is arousal, not valence. Although anger is a negative emotion, because of its high arousal, it drives sharing more than satisfaction, which is positive but low arousal. This overturns the default assumption that "positive energy promotes dissemination."

A1 — Application in the Book (Past Application)

Case 1: Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent—awe drives sharing

  • Problem: Why does certain seemingly ordinary content trigger explosive dissemination?
  • Use of the methodology: Susan Boyle was mocked by the audience for her plain appearance, but her heavenly voice stunned the whole room. This triggered the emotion of "awe"—positive and high arousal—and the audience's hearts beat faster and their bodies were activated.
  • Conclusion: Awe belongs to the "positive + high arousal" quadrant and drove a large amount of sharing behavior.
  • Result: Within nine days, the video received more than 100 million views, becoming one of the most popular online videos at the time.

Case 2: United Airlines breaks a guitar—anger drives sharing

  • Problem: Why can a negative experience achieve greater dissemination than positive publicity?
  • Use of the methodology: After Dave Carroll's guitar was broken and his claim was unsuccessful, he created the song "United Breaks Guitars." Anger belongs to the "negative + high arousal" quadrant and likewise activated sharing behavior.
  • Conclusion: Although anger is a negative emotion, because of its high arousal, it drives a larger scale of spread than much positive content.
  • Result: The video received 3 million views within 10 days, United Airlines' stock price fell 10%, with a direct loss of 180 million USD.

A2 — Trigger Scenario (Future Trigger) ★

In what situations will users need this skill?

  1. The user is designing the emotional tone of marketing content and hesitating between "warm and touching" and "shocking and controversial".
  2. The user finds that content quality is high but the share rate is low, and when analyzing the cause suspects that the emotional strategy has gone wrong.
  3. The user is doing public welfare promotion or health promotion and needs to choose between a "fear" or "warm" emotional route.

Language Signals (activate when these appear in the user's words)

  • "The content is good but no one shares it, why?"
  • "Should positive energy or negative emotions be used for promotion?"
  • "Is scare marketing/fear appeal effective?"
  • "Why do angry comments spread faster than positive comments?"
  • "Why do warm and touching ads fail to trigger sharing?"

Distinction from adjacent skills

  • Difference from emotion-injection : The emotional arousal model is a diagnostic tool (judging whether a certain emotion promotes spread), while emotional injection is an operational tool (how to inject high-arousal emotions into content). Diagnose first, then operate.
  • Difference from social-currency : Social currency focuses on "how the sharer looks", while the emotional arousal model focuses on "what the sharer's physiological state is".

E — Executable Steps (Execution)

After the skill is activated, the agent should execute the following steps:

  1. Place the target emotion into a two-dimensional matrix

    • Identify what the main emotion currently featured in the user's content is.
    • Judge the valence (positive/negative) and arousal level (high/low) of that emotion.
    • Completion standard: Confirm which of the four quadrants the emotion falls into.
  2. Diagnose whether the emotion has spreading power

    • If it falls into a high-arousal quadrant (awe, anger, worry, excitement, humor), mark it as "spread-friendly".
    • If it falls into a low-arousal quadrant (contentment, sadness), mark it as "spread-inhibiting" and it needs adjustment.
    • Completion standard: Give a clear "spread-friendly/inhibiting" judgment and the reason.
  3. Recommend the direction for emotional adjustment

    • If the current emotion is low-arousal, suggest replacing it with a high-arousal emotion of the same valence (such as contentment→excitement, sadness→anger/worry).
    • Completion standard: Provide at least one specific emotion replacement suggestion and explain why the new emotion is more conducive to spread.

B — Boundary (Boundary) ★

Do not use this skill in the following situations

  • When the product itself needs trust and a sense of reassurance(such as insurance, medical care, financial advisors) — although anger and worry promote sharing, they may damage brand trust. Spreading power is not equal to brand power.
  • Content aimed at children or sensitive groups— High-arousal emotions (especially fear and anger) may cause psychological harm.
  • In B2B decision-making scenarios— B2B procurement decisions rely more on rational analysis, and the impact of emotional arousal on decisions may be limited.

Failure modes the author warns about in the book

  • Low-arousal emotions cannot drive sharing(ce-005): Sadness and contentment suppress sharing behavior. The sharing rate of sad articles is 16% lower than average. When marketing content is based on a tear-jerking, moving, and heartwarming tone, even if the content is liked, it will not be shared.
  • Relying only on information indoctrination without touching emotions(ce-015): Conveying only rational data while ignoring emotional resonance means the information is received but does not drive sharing.

The author's blind spots / limitations of the era

  • The two-dimensional model simplifies the complexity of emotions—actual emotional experiences are often mixed (such as "surprised and delighted"), and the model does not address the spread effects of compound emotions.
  • The model does not consider cultural differences—the expression of and reactions to "awe" and "anger" may be completely different across cultures.
  • The data in the book mainly comes from sharing of New York Times articles, and the mechanisms of emotional transmission in new media forms such as short videos and livestreaming have not been verified.

Adjacent methodologies that are easy to confuse

  • The common-sense assumption that "positive emotions promote transmission": This model precisely overturns this assumption. Contentment is a positive emotion but suppresses transmission, while anger is a negative emotion but promotes transmission. The key dimension is arousal rather than valence.
