R — Original Text (Reading)
"You will not be right simply because a large number of people momentarily agree with you. You will not be right simply because important people agree with you." (1961) "Neither a conventional nor an unconventional approach, per se, is conservative." (1965)
I — Methodology Skeleton
True conservatism = knowledge + rationality, not conformity:
- Conventional practice is not equal to conservative practice
- Unconventional practice is also not equal to not being conservative
- The correct standard: Are your assumptions right? Are the facts right? Is the reasoning right?
- "Public opinion surveys cannot replace thinking"—majority agreement does not increase correctness
- A CEO who misleads the public will ultimately mislead himself—honesty is the foundation of conservatism
A1 — Application in the Book
Case: The Ten-Year Bet
- Use: Buffett and Protégé made only one investment decision over ten years—do nothing
- Result: S&P 500 returned 125.8% vs. five funds at 2.0%-8.7%—"doing nothing" won
A2 — Trigger Scenarios
- Most people recommend a certain investment but you are not sure
- Your analysis is contrary to market consensus
- Someone uses "industry practice" to persuade you
- You are doing something "different from others" and feel uneasy
Language Signals
- "Everyone says..."
- "All the analysts recommend it"
- "Why not follow along?"
- "Isn't it safer to be a bit more conservative?"
E — Executable Steps
-
Separate "most people" from "evidence"
- Completion standard: List the evidence supporting your judgment (independent of "who else says so")
-
Test your assumptions/facts/reasoning
- Completion standard: Every step withstands the test of "what if it's wrong?"
-
Accept being right alone
- Completion standard: If independent analysis concludes the opposite of the group, are you willing to stick to it?
B — Boundaries
- Independent ≠ stubborn—if your analysis is falsified, you should change
- Sometimes the majority is indeed right—you cannot automatically do the opposite just because "everyone does it"
- Author's blind spot: Buffett has enough capital and reputation to withstand "being alone"—ordinary investors have different capacity to withstand pressure
