About this skill

EDM / Club style layer

The biggest difference between this style and the rest of this library: it is not a "song."

The structure of song-based music is a "sequence of content" (the verse talks about this, the chorus talks about that). The structure of club music is "addition and subtraction of layers."

So many general rules need to be reinterpreted here—butnot invalidated, just changed in form。

1. Required before you start writing

Required Question
① Who is it for, and where will they listen ★ Dance floor or headphones. This decision changes the entire structure (§3.2)
② Which subgenre house / techno / trance / dubstep / future bass…BPM and structure differ enormously
③ Is there a melody ★ If not, the form relies entirely on the layering in §5
④ Who is off the grid ★ Even in a fully quantized style, not every single element in the whole track can be on the grid(§6)

2. ★ Portability table

Technique Can it be carried into song-based music Notes
Using layer addition and subtraction as form ✅ ★ Can be carried over, and it is extremely useful It is mc-arrangement-arch the extreme form of §5 "arrangement as form"
Long build ⚠️ Half transferable Listeners of song-based music have much shorter patience.Shorten it to 2–4 bars and it works(= the pre-chorus anticipation in J-POP,mc-style-jpop §6)
A section with only drums ⚠️ Half transferable In a song it is an effective subtraction event; butdo not make it as long as 16 bars
Four-on-the-floor kick ⚠️ Half transferable Strong style marker
Sidechain pumping ⚠️ Half transferable ★ A very strong marker.example-01 of exclude explicitly excludes modern sidechain pumping
absolute quantification ⚠️ ★ semi-portable, and has prerequisites(§6)
repeated infiltration into the unconscious ✅ Portable §5.2。but song-type ones need to work with the lyrics' progression
the idea "purpose determines form" ✅ ★ portable, and should be ported §3.2

★ criterion:

you can port its structural techniques (layering, build, repetition), but don't port its time scale (the buildup starting at 16 bars).

3. Structure

3.1 Typical shapes

four-on-the-floor 底鼓起
 → 加 hi-hat
 → 加钢琴之类的持续伴奏(以 8+ 小节为单位重复)
 → 正式前奏 → A メロ → サビ
 → 回到只有鼓的段落 → 循环……

Features:

  • melody is optional
  • structurelong and large
  • hasonly drums leftoronly pad left → ★ the thickness drop is extremely sharp
  • with drums as the centerto arrange

3.2 ★ Why this structure works

Two reasons, both related to "where it's heard":

  1. slowly building is more suitable for dancing
  2. ★ a section with only drums makes it convenient for the DJ to mix into the next track

★★ A structure that feels wordy and boring when listened to at home is extremely effective on the dance floor—purpose determines form.

This sentence is the most important sentence in this skill, and it can be ported out: for any question of "is doing this right", first ask "where is it heard, and on which listen" (→ ARR-SPEC's intent.listener_situation)。

Section 3.3 Composition

How the interior of a club track is segmented, two approaches should be viewed side by side:

★ The approach of sustaining form through density (DeSantis p0299): it does not rely on traditional sectional division, but on "revolving around a small amount of material and continuously changing texture density" to sustain the form. Three specific units can be borrowed directly:

  • Buildup: commonly 16 or 32 bars(or multiples thereof), pushing density to the peak of this section by continuously adding layers
  • Breakdown: a low-energy contrasting section, commonly done byremoving all drum elementsor converselyleaving only drums, usually shorter than the buildup, but still measured in 8 or 16 barsunits
  • Drop: the section with the highest density in the whole track, which can follow a buildup or a breakdown;there are usually only 1–2 in a track, while buildups and breakdowns can be more numerous

classic dub techno(such as the Chain Reaction label) takes another extreme: the bassline or drum pattern at the beginning runs through the whole track, with no obvious sectional contrast, and new material is added by layering onto existing material, with little large-scale change (p0299).

Criterion (p0300): for branches closely related to pop music, it is still recommended to use a more traditional song form; for "purely electronic" genres such as techno, trance, and dubstep, a small amount of material combined with continuous changes in density is enough to sustain a sense of structure, and there is no need to force verse/chorus onto them.

4. Build and Drop

4.1 The essence of build is anticipation, not loudness

A common reason a build doesn't rise: the build is only adding things, not "promising".

An effective build must givea predictable endpoint:

  • filter sweep(cutoff one-way upward → the listener knows it’s going to peak)
  • Rhythmic acceleration(8th notes → 16th notes → 32nd notes → the listener can count how many beats are left)
  • Rising pitch(riser)
  • ★ A standstill at the very last moment(→ mc-style-jpop §6’s "sudden full stop, then bang back in")

The fifth type of build ending: the Shepherd tone(Howard & Angus p0248–0250). The spectrum cycles only within one octave; with each semitone rise, each component shifts up one slot, with higher components gradually fading out and lower components gradually fading in; the perceptual effect isan infinitely rising scale, but acoustically it never exceeds one octave. It is the only kind of riser that can continue indefinitely, suitable for sections where you don’t know which bar the drop is in, or where you want to stretch the anticipation out for a long time. How to do it: a set of octave-stacked partials, each with its amplitude controlled by a bell-shaped envelope.

4.2 The three reasons a drop doesn’t land

Cause Solution
The build is already as full as the drop ★ Return to mc-arrangement-arch §2:The energy curve must have a descent(the 62/62 strong rule). The build’s peak shouldbe lower than the drop
The low frequencies weren’t cleared out during the build In the build, cut the low frequencies, and bring them back together at the drop—this is the physical source of the "drop"
The drop has nothing new The drop must bring in oneelement that hasn’t appeared before(a timbre, a riff)

4.3 ★ A default value to be careful about

Under EDM prompts, the generation backend willgive you build + drop by default, and it is oftentextbook-style。 example-01 of the exclude exclude in EDM drop is precisely for this.

The criterion is the same as elsewhere:Did you choose it, or did you fall into it by default?

5. Layering is form

5.1 Without melody, where does form come from?

Most contemporary electronic genres without instrumental music tend to avoid traditional verse and chorus sections, and instead create formal contrast through "layered addition and subtraction."

How to express it in ARR-SPEC:

  • form[].name still needs to be filled in, butuse Instrumental / Intro / Outro, and in note write which layers this section has
  • ★ Form is actually carried by roster[].entry/exit carried by, not by form[].name carried by
  • energy_curve becomes the main structural description

★ This is exactly what mc-arrangement-arch §5’s "arrangement is form" section talks about; EDM is its purest form.

5.1a ★ The order in which parts enter is itself structure: the classic Acid approach (Nozaki)

Classic Acid has only four tracks: riff, bass, hi-hat, and kick. They do not enter at the same time; the order of entry is fixed(p0271–0272):

  1. Only the riff
  2. Add hi-hat
  3. The bass comes in
  4. Finally release the 4/4 kick

★ The kick enters last, which is the opposite of the intuition of "lay down the drums first, then stack on top." Three accompanying points (p0273):

  • At the opening, push the riff’s CUTOFF very low so it almost feels like a fade-in. The goal is to make phrases where you "can't hear where the start is," so that until the hi-hat comes in, listeners think the beat is half a beat off from what it actually is. The metric ambiguity is deliberate; the moment the hi-hat enters and locks in, that's the effect
  • Before the hi-hat comes in, manually sweep the CUTOFF open slowly so the monotonous repetition doesn't get tiresome. A slow LFO or filter envelope can do it too, but the author believesonly manual adjustment can produce unpredictable variation
  • When a new part enters, first lower the CUTOFF of the previous layer: before the bass comes in, temporarily turn the riff's CUTOFF down so the two don't push to full at the same time and interfere with each other; after the kick comes in, the riff and bass "entangle freely," controlled by turning the two parameters CUTOFF and RESONANCE at the same time (when one is lowered, the other is raised)

Generalization: in any loop-based style, "who enters first, who enters last" is a decision that must be written into the spec sheet, not defaulted to starting with the drums.

5.2 Repetition itself is accumulation

Repetition seeps into the unconscious and evokes a semi-involuntary bodily response— even without a big climax, repetition itself constitutes accumulation.

★ This mc-melody superficially conflicts with the "anti-predetermined harmony" of §8, but actually does not conflict:

  • Song-type music: listeners arefollowing the content, predictable = boring
  • Club music: listeners aredancing, predictable = able to keep up

This is a real failure condition:mc-melody The rule in §8.1 about "the same phrase repeated 3 or more times," does not hold in club music。

6. ★ Quantization: the one point this skill most needs to make clear

The two sides' claims should be viewed side by side:

Source Claim
DeSantis (p0154) In Techno、House、Electro、EDM ,absolute quantization is entirely appropriate, often accompanied by completely uniform, unchanging velocity
This library's supporting-evidence table "not all parts should be strictly aligned to the grid"62/62 hits, a strong rule

Reconciliation—the key is "all parts":

  • ✅ the drum kit can be absolutely quantized, if the style requires it
  • ❌ but not every instrument in the whole track can be on the grid—that is the fingerprint of a generative model, not a requirement of any style
  • ★ Quantization is a per-instrument decision, not a global switch

Practical approach: quantize the drum kit 100%,leave one played element unquantized (bass, sampled material, vocals, or the attack of a pad layer).

6.1 If everything really must be 0

The judgment itself has already been covered in §6; here we only define how to write it:In checks.exemptions state the reason(for example, "gridding is the language of this style"),exemptions must state a reason; silent skipping is not allowed。

6.2 Drum machine aesthetics

Drum machine aesthetics (signature example: Roland TR-808)deliberately give the hi-hat / snare no velocity variation at all—— Cold, flat, and proud of it.

★ This is alegitimate stylistic choice, not laziness. But it looks identical in spec to "forgot to do dynamics"—so it must be written into exemptions to be distinguished.

7. Timbre: in this style, timbre is composition

In sections without melody, "what timbre is this layer" is the entire content.

→ So mc-sound-design 's weight in this style is far higher than elsewhere.

★ Technique 82 "real-time manipulation" deserves separate mention: The variation produced by a human hand sweeping CUTOFF in real time cannot be produced by quantization or randomization— this is the most natural landing point in this style for the §6 line "leave one thing unquantized".

8. Measured: EDM vs other styles

In the warehouse measured corpus, 10 edm tracks:

Metric edm pop jazz
roster size (median) 32 36 22
number of sections (median) 10 10 9
proportion of instruments present at the opening 21% 21% 16%
number of instruments entering midway 26 29 20
number of instruments exiting early 20 16 10

Reading: EDM'sexits are more than pop's(20 vs 16)—consistent with §3.1 "sections with only drums". But the gap is not as large as R&B (28).

⚠ Do not cite BPM: detected edm median 129, range 68–152, beat tracking has octave errors on electronic music (68 is obviously half of 136).
