About this skill

Rap Lyrics (说唱的词)

This skill only covers the words themselves. How the vocal sits in the arrangement, how delivery is distributed, how the beat is made—that'sComposition and Arrangement(Rap Arrangement) and Vocal Coaching territory, not this library's.

The division of labor is a clean cut:

说唱编排(作曲编曲) ── 音节落在哪一拍、哪一拍休止、用哪档声音说
本 skill lw-rap ── 那些音节是什么字、押几处韵、押的是什么、说的是什么

★ At the boundary there's only one thing to align:Rhyme placement. The arrangement side writes it as "landing on beat 4 or on a weak beat"; this skill writes it as "how many characters this line should rhyme"; Placement is recorded with a flow diagram (§2.2); this skill doesn't invent its own system.

★ The biggest difference between this skill and other skills in this library

rap lyrics are written by "how many syllables fit per bar", not by "a nice-sounding sentence".

"How to Rap" puts this most directly: a singer can hold one note for a long time, "I love you"—three words can carry an entire verse;the same word count in rap can't even fill half a bar(p0125). So a hip-hop song requires far more words than other genres ("How to Rap" p0124).

Two consequences run through the whole piece:

  1. Density is the first parameter—first decide how many syllables per bar, how many of them rhyme, then talk about what to write
  2. ★ Rhyme isn't decoration, it's structure—rhyme connects line to line, and the rhyme scheme is the skeleton of the verse (§4)

1. Three dials: how rap lyrics differ from pop lyrics

Set these three numbers before you start writing; they determine everything that follows.

Dial What it asks Common values When you can't decide
Syllable density How many syllables per bar 8–16 (mostly on a 16th-note grid) First hum meaningless syllables along with the beat and count them (§8.2)
Rhyme density How many of these syllables rhyme 1 per bar → 11 (§2) Start with 2 per bar
Intelligibility target How much should the listener understand on first pass Everything / the gist / just sound good Depends on content form (§5)—story type must be fully understood

★ The three constrain each other: high syllable density + high rhyme density → intelligibility necessarily drops. This is not a flaw, it's a choice, but it must bechosen(§2.4).

Failure condition: starting to write lyrics before these three numbers are set → the lines come out with random lengths and random rhyme positions, and will inevitably need major revision once put on the beat.

2. Rhyme density

2.1 Where it comes from: rap rhymes are an order of magnitude denser than pop lyrics

In early hip-hop, rhyme appeared only onthe connecting words at the end of phrases— in the example given in 《How to Rap》, two bars have only two rhyming syllables, "mine" and "rhymes" (p0118). Later MCs began filling rhymes into every bar:

Statement Who said it Source
Before Rakim everyone rhymed only the end words; Rakim demonstrated **"put rhymes within a rhyme"(rhymes inside a rhyme); Big Daddy Kane expanded it to7–8 rhyming words per line** Masta Ace 《How to Rap》p0118
I try torhyme two words per bar, while an ordinary rapper rhymes once per bar—that doubles the writing workload and is extremely difficult Termanology 《How to Rap》p0119
I likewhole-line rhyme, not just rhyming the last two syllables; rhyming 4, 5, 6, or 7 syllables is all fine Rah Digga 《How to Rap》p0119

An example you can use directly as a ruler: Kool G Rap《Know Da Game》— the first bar has 4 rhyming syllables (blown / home / zone / roam), the second bar has 7 (flown / dome / blow / chrom- / -o- / -somes / bones), 11 rhyming syllables across two bars(《How to Rap》p0118–p0119)。

★ Use it as the upper-limit dial: 11/2 bars is the high-density end; 1 per bar is the 1980s end. Where the song you're writing falls on this line is a decision you must make.

2.2 Which positions the rhymes fall on

Position Effect Source
Line end(falling on beat 4) Most common, most conspicuous 《How to Rap》p0120
Mid-line (internal rhyme) When it falls on an unstressed syllable it is not conspicuous, more like conversation 《How to Rap》p0120–p0121
Across beats, across measures The "funky rhythm" in Nas's《N.Y. State of Mind》 starts 4 beats earlier and extends to the next weak beat; "I be kicking" extends from the first measure into the second measure 《How to Rap》p0121
Whole line(rhyming in multiple places within the line) Extremely high density, the approach of Rah Digga 《How to Rap》p0119
Shift the whole section Tajai: add a few words at the beginning and cut a few words at the end, "scoot it over" the whole section, and the rhyme lands in an unexpected position 《How to Rap》p0122

★ How to assign rhymes that cross measures(《How to Rap》p0121–p0122 gives the rules for determining this; count rhymes by them when writing):

  • Next measurecontinues the same rhyme → the two measures merge into one couplet (Nas's example: musician / inflicting / composition continues)
  • Next measureswitches to a new rhyme → the overflowing part counts only toward the previous measure (B.I.G.《Ready to Die》: material / imperial overflow, but the second measure is dominated by ripper / stripper / sipper)

★★ Record landing points with a flow diagram: if you want to write down "which beat this rhyme lands on," use it— mark beats 1–4 at the top, one line is one measure, stressed syllables are bolded and fall under the beat numbers, and empty beats are rests (《How to Rap》p0081, p0085; the MCs in the book each have their own little symbols for pauses, elongation, and stress, p0080). How the landing point is finally determined belongs to the arrangement side; this skill is only responsible for decidingwhat word goes in that slot。

2.3 Density can change, and the change itself is a signal

Technique Explanation Source
Escalation within a verse Dray (Das EFX) starts calm, and only by lines 6–8 does he move to a more complex flow 《How to Rap》p0119
Double up with the instrumental El Da Sensei: drum rolls and extra snares will push you todouble the rhymesthere, to keep the listener interested 《How to Rap》p0119–p0120
Use a sudden change as a section marker Switching from few rhymes per measure to many and then backis itself a section signal 《How to Rap 2》p0203

★ Self-check action: write the number of rhyming syllables in each measure of the whole verse as a string of numbers (4, 7, 4, 3, 3, 6 …). If this string of numbers is the same from beginning to end, what you have written is an exercise, not a song.

2.4 ★ The cost of density: intelligibility

Density is not better the higher it is; this is the most important point in this section.

What you choose What you get What you lose When to choose it
High density(more than 5 places per measure) Technical impact, "catchiness" Listeners cannot grasp the meaning on the first pass battle, braggadocio, songs that need to show off flow
Medium density(2–3 places per measure) Both a sense of rhyme and easy to follow Will not make people marvel Most songs
Low density(1 place per measure or fewer) The content is heard clearly Technically inconspicuous ★ Story-type, conscious-type(§5.2、§5.4)

"How to Rap" p0122 frames this as a direct trade-off: When the content is especially strong, using simpler and more consistent rhyme technique (most rhymes landing on beat 4) actually highlights the content better; Only when you want to show off flow do you use varied rhyme positions and complex rhyme schemes.

R.A. the Rugged Man suggestsdoing both: one song that constantly changes rhyme schemes, and one that keeps the same flow specifically to showcase lyrical ability— he cites Redman: "Rated R" keeps the same flow to showcase lyrics, while tracks like "Green Island" showcase multiple flows ("How to Rap" p0122–p0123).

★ Self-check action (intelligibility test): read the verse to someone who hasn't seen the lyrics, once, and have them retellwhat happened in this section. If they can't retell it and the song is story-type → lower the density. If it's battle-type → don't lower it, but confirm that the punchline line is audible (§6.3).

Failure condition: hooks don't apply high density. Hook lyrics should be simpler than verses, lower in density, and drawn out a bit longer (hooks are usually 4 or 8 bars, verses are usually 16 bars, "How to Rap" p0201–p0202, p0207).

3. Types of rhyme: multisyllabic rhymes and slant rhymes

3.1 Five basic rhymes (this layer is general rhyme principles,lw-rhyme explains the principles; here only rap usage is listed)

Type Definition Example Status in rap Source
Perfect rhyme perfect rhyme Two words end exactly the same cat / hat,mug / plug Early mainstay;repeating the same word now also counts as perfect rhyme—once considered corny, now widely accepted 《How to Rap》p0095–p0096
Assonance assonance Same vowel, surrounding consonants may differ fit / hip,cat / back ★ The most used type in contemporary hip-hop, because it is the most flexible and has the most combinable words 《How to Rap》p0097
Slant rhyme bending words Vowels are only close; achieved bychanging pronunciationto make them the same arms / Mom's(Eminem《Lose Yourself》"arms are heavy" / "Mom's spaghetti")、three / Dre Makes words that don't originally rhyme rhyme 《How to Rap》p0098
Alliteration alliteration Words begin with the same sound jimmy / joke, mama / might The most subtle, doesn't establish a strong link, only improves the overall sound 《How to Rap》p0099
Consonance consonance Same consonants, different vowels sock / sack, cut / cot; "hip-hop" itself is Adds a layer of flow, doesn't carry structure 《How to Rap》p0100

★ Alliteration and consonance cannot be used as rhyme schemes—they are not enough to connect two lines (p0099). To connect lines, you need perfect rhyme, assonance, or slant rhyme.

3.2 Multisyllabic rhymes (compound / multisyllable rhymes)

Definition: A rhyme longer than one syllable, also called multies ("How to Rap" p0100).

★ This is the default of contemporary rap: single-syllable rhymes (cat / bat / hat) are already rare in modern hip-hop (p0100).

Statement Who said it Source
Multisyllabic rhyme is not rhyming "fight / light / with all my might"; it is "random luck" against "handsome fuck" against "we cop vans and trucks"—basic rhymenot catchy Kool G Rap 《How to Rap》p0101
I try to findones that haven't been rhymed yetrhyme words; the method isto combine two wordsto rhyme with another multisyllabic word Speech (Arrested Development) 《How to Rap》p0101
A whole album of cat / bat / hat is just boring—a small vocabulary means less you can write Masta Ace 《How to Rap》p0101

★ Within a multisyllabic rhyme you can mix rhyme types: In Wu-Tang's "Triumph," "dropping these" rhymes with "mockeries"— "these" and "-ies" are a perfect rhyme, while "drop-" and "mock-" are a vowel rhyme (《How to Rap》p0100–p0101). This point matters: the whole block doesn't have to be perfect; as long as one perfect rhyme holds it up, the rest can work as vowel rhymes.

The pioneers are Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap, who in turn influenced Eminem and Big Pun (《How to Rap》p0101).

3.3 ★ How multisyllabic rhymes "connect": three kinds of links

Multisyllabic rhyme blocks often differ in length and stress position, so what makes listeners hear them as a pair? 《How to Rap》p0102–p0104 gives three kinds, this is the most practical table in this section:

Link type Mechanism Example
① Linked by rhyme It doesn't matter if the rhythm is completely different, as long as the rhyming syllables are strong enough Lady of Rage《Unfucwitable》: "mic brawler" / "night crawler" / "like I'm off that water"—the stress positions are completely different, and the last line even has more syllables, butthe first syllable of each block rhymes (mic / night / like), and each block ends with two rhyming syllables (brawler / crawler / water)
② Linked by rhythm The rhyme is only barely similar; it relies onthe syllable count and stress positions being exactly the sameto establish the link Snoop《Nuthin' but a G Thang》: "One, two, three and to the four" / "Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre is at the door"—at the start it only bends three and Dre together, but the two blockshave 5 syllables each, with stress on the 1st and 4th syllables
③ Partial link Some scattered words attach to the main rhyme block without forming a complete multisyllabic rhyme themselves Jay-Z《22 Twos》: the main rhyme blocks are "too late to come together" / "too much love equal forever"; in addition, "too much" only links to "too,"incomplete but still adds rhyme

★★ ② is the most underrated one:When you can't find a suitable rhyme, don't force the rhyme; align the rhythm. Nelly's way of putting it is—first make what you're saying clear, "you're not worried about if it rhymes" (《How to Rap》p0103–p0104).

★ ③ is the cheapest way to increase rhyme density: you don't have to create a new complete multisyllabic rhyme, attach scattered words to an existing rhyme blockand you can raise the rhyme count in a bar (p0104).

3.4 How to find rhymes

Method Approach Who said it Source
List method List the rhyming words and phrases before writing the lyrics Tash: "I think of the rhyming words first, then I think of the line" 《How to Rap》p0105
Alphabet method Write A–Z once at the top of each page, and while writing go through at / bat / cat / dat… in your head Rah Digga 《How to Rap》p0105
Build sentences around the rhymes Fill a sheet of paper with all the rhyming words, then build sentences around those words Fredro Starr 《How to Rap》p0105
If stuck, downgrade to vowel rhyme When you can't get a perfect rhyme, look for all the words with the same vowel El Da Sensei 《How to Rap》p0105
Rhyming dictionary / dictionary Look up synonyms, antonyms, etymology Wildchild, Myka 9 (recommends Roget's Thesaurus) 《How to Rap》p0105–p0106、p0068

★ Avoiding clichés is the main cost: Akil the MC——"There's a word or a way to say everything, the hard part isnot doing what others have already done"; Termanology says that to find a word no one has rhymed, a verse can take six hours to write(《How to Rap》p0106)。

Failure conditions (the failure points of rhyme-driven writing): Kool G Rap's warning is the hardest one——rhyming words shouldn't determine where the story goes: "You can't just put whatever comes next that rhymes—the story gotta be right too" (decide what happens next first, then go find the rhyme, How to Rap p0050). → This is the same thing as "rhyme-driven vs meaning-driven" in §8.3.

3.5 ★ Not rhyming is also an option

Not every position has to rhyme; sometimes not rhyming is better than forcing a rhyme(How to Rap p0106). Three statements side by side:

  • David Banner:"It doesn't necessarily have to rhyme, if the feeling is there." (if the feeling is there, it doesn't have to rhyme)
  • Big Noyd: there are some things I just want to say, and it may not rhyme with the previous line, but I still say it to make the point clear(p0107)
  • Bootie Brown: Prodigy and Nas don't always rhyme——"you'll feel like, this actually doesn't rhyme, but you don't care, because the way he said it is too cool" (p0107)

★ Self-check action: if there is a line in the verse that isthe most important line in the whole song, check whether it was changed for the sake of rhyming. If yes → change it back, and let it not rhyme.

→ For the general principle of "when to deliberately not rhyme," see lw-rhyme; here I only write the three rap-side examples.

4. Rhyme scheme: how rhyme becomes the skeleton of a verse

Definition: arranging rhyming words and phrases in a particular order throughout a verse—this pattern is the rhyme scheme (How to Rap p0108). MURS compares it to a puzzle: the rhyming words are the pieces, and the rhyme scheme is the picture that tells you where the pieces go (p0108).

4.1 Five rhyme schemes (classified by "how many lines the rhyme connects," How to Rap p0112–p0117)

Rhyme scheme Definition Example When to use
couplet Couplet Two lines connected by the same rhyme Beastie Boys《Shadrach》:handle it / candle to it ★ Most commonly used, easiest to think of;A whole song often starts from one couplet(p0113)
single-liner Single line This line doesn't rhyme with other lines, the syllables within the line rhyme with each other The Game "Put You on the Game": inline indo / Timbo Increases flow variety (commonly used by B.I.G.)
multi-liner Multi-line Three or more lines connected by the same rhyme Public Enemy "Bring the Noise": one / numb / gun / spun across four lines More time-consuming and labor-intensive than a couplet, butthe flow has more room to maneuver; "if you can rhyme four lines, don't rhyme only two"
whole verse Whole section All lines in the whole section use the same rhyme Busta Rhymes "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See": heard of us / murderous / curious, 16 lines with the same rhyme scheme; Kool G Rap "The Anthem" Extremely difficult—you have to write so many rhymes with the same sound while keeping the message clear
extra rhymes Extra rhyme Add another set of words that rhyme with each other but not with the main rhyme scheme, on top of the main rhyme scheme B-Real on OutKast "Xplosion": the main rhyme is the couplet wine / mine, plus pass / glass Adds density without changing the skeleton

Combination(p0114–p0115): they can be mixed within the same section. One commonly cited combination is use a multi-liner to connect the odd-numbered lines, then add a single-liner at the end to make it an even number of lines; a more complex example is "couplet → 8-bar multi-liner → 5-bar multi-liner → single-liner ending", combining into a 16-bar section.

★ Each line has more than one rhyme(p0117): a couplet is not "one rhyme in the first line, one rhyme in the second line"— each line can have multiple rhyming components,as long as the same rhyme continues across two lines, they both count as part of that couplet. → This is exactly the source of the rhyme density in §2.

4.2 How to choose a rhyme scheme

Situation Choice Reason
Just starting to write this song couplet It is often the starting point of the whole song (p0113)
Want to show off technique multi-liner / whole verse Requires more time and energy; the reward is room to maneuver
Content overwhelms everything couplet + rhyme landing on beat 4 The trade-off in §2.4
Every song is the same ★ Change "How to Rap" p0109: different rhyme schemes make each song sound unique; the hallmark of an MC with a limited vocabulary isalways the same rhyme pattern

★ There is nothing wrong with a simple rhyme scheme—if you are as talented as Melle Mel, you do not have to change your flow in every section (p0113). Failure condition: only one rhyme scheme across the whole album → that is not style, it is insufficient vocabulary (p0109).

4.3 The boundary with rap arrangement

Which beat the rhyme lands on is a parameter on the arrangement side(composition and arrangement); what this skill decides is "how many rhymes this line has and what it rhymes with". What is handed over is the lyric draft and the flow diagram marked with the intended landing points (§2.2):

  • The rhyme'slanding points, rests, breath positions → determined by the arrangement side; this skill only marks the intention
  • The rhyme'squantity, type, content → this skill §2, §3

★ A reverse constraint you must know: If the beat is a 3-bar loop, the words must be written specifically for it— use a 3-line multi-liner, or "a pair of couplets + a single-liner," because the rhyme scheme of an even number of bars will misalign with the music's restart point (《How to Rap 2》p0203–p0204). When the time signature is not 4/4, the flow must be rewritten, and the rhyme must land on beat 3 (《How to Rap 2》p0070).

5. Content: form

For a complete comparison of content and form (subject types, the conventions and writing methods of battle/boast/storytelling), see reference.md。

6. Content tools: techniques used line by line

Content form is the skeleton of the song, and content tools are the specific techniques used line by line(《How to Rap》p0054). The goal is to make every line powerful: Guerilla Black——every word must be purposeful like a bullet(p0055)。

6.1 The trio of figurative language

Tool Definition Example Source
Simile simile Directly compares using like / as Chino XL《No Complex》:"my clique is stoned like their eyes gazed upon Medusa";Masta Ace:"as fake as a tooth-fairy" 《How to Rap》p0058
Metaphor metaphor Does not use like / as,directly replaces the original thing with the thing it is compared to Gift of Gab says "I'm an ancient Zen master" instead of "like an…"; "I'm a chef eating all you carnivores" 《How to Rap》p0058–p0059
Analogy analogy An extended metaphor, which can cover an entire verse, an entire song, or even an entire album 2Pac's 《Me and My Girlfriend》 is on the surface about a girlfriend but is actually about his gun, and the whole song forms one analogy 《How to Rap》p0059–p0060

★ Why it is worth it: a clever comparisonconveys more information with fewer words, and listeners may take a while to catch on—this adds depth to the lyrics (《How to Rap》p0057). MURS's assessment: "Metaphors are powerful—like a dunk" (p0059).

Failure condition: when metaphors pile up until listeners cannot keep up, it is no longer depth but noise. Self-check action: more than two unrelated metaphors in one bar → cut it down to no more than two, or turn them into different sides of the same analogy (this is exactly what analogy does).

6.2 Wordplay

Definition: "playing with words and their meanings—using language in a clever way" (《How to Rap》p0069).

Technique Example Source
Multiple contexts of the same word R.A. the Rugged Man's 《Black and White》 repeatedly uses "white": White House / White Sox / white cops in donut shops / white powder / Snow White / white knight / white lies…the same word means something different each time 《How to Rap》p0069
Pun In De La Soul's 《Ghost Weed #1》, Pharoahe Monch switches back and forth between the literal meaning of "kill / killing" (to kill) and its slang meaning (to perform explosively) 《How to Rap》p0070

★ ①That approach of "one word running through the whole verse, with a different meaning each time" and lw-song-intent 's anchor_object are two forms of the same structural device: an object creates meaning through reappearing, and a word creates meaning through reappearing.

6.3 punchline

Definition: an especially strong line that can "hit" listeners—it can be humor, can be a brilliant metaphor, can be wordplay, as long as it creates impact(《How to Rap》p0071)。

The structure is setup + punch: Canibus in "Uni-4-Orm"—— "If you try to battle me face to face, / I'll bring your career to a stop quicker than anti-lock brakes." (How to Rap p0072)

Approach Description Source
Write the punchline first, then build the verse Write that line down first, then build the whole section around it 《How to Rap》p0072
Keep a material bank When Yukmouth thinks of a punchline while walking, he writes it down and stores it in a "data bank," then puts it in when he finds a suitable song 《How to Rap》p0072
Position Often placed at theendof the bar, to get a reaction from the audience 《How to Rap》p0072
Pair with a 1-beat rest Put the punchline on the second line of the couplet, with a 1-beat rest separating the two lines 《How to Rap 2》p0055–p0057

★ The landing point and rests are ultimately decided by the arrangement side(composition and arrangement); this skill only handleswhat that line is。

Self-check action: Say the punchline on its own.It still works outside of context → it is a punchline; It needs explanation to be funny → it is an idea, not yet a punchline.

6.4 Imagery

Use vivid language to create pictures in the listener's mind——many MCs describe it as "painting with words" (How to Rap p0055). Kool G Rap calls himself a "writer-type rapper," wanting listeners to see a short film (p0056). Classic example: Geto Boys' "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" uses a lot of detail to depict paranoia, creating unforgettable images (p0057).

→ How to find concrete nouns and how to practice object writing belong to lw-imagery, this skill will not repeat them. The only thing to add on the rap side:High density means you have more syllables to pile up details—— This is rap's advantage over pop lyrics, don't waste it on adjectives.

7. Vocabulary and Syntax

7.1 Vocabulary Size

Statement Who said it Source
"The bigger your vocabulary, the more ammunition you have" 2Mex 《How to Rap》p0063
In a "word war," the one with the most weapons usually wins RBX 《How to Rap》p0063
The bigger the vocabulary, the more images you can paint, the wider the audience you can reach — 《How to Rap》p0064
Small vocabulary → the rhyme patterns are always the same Masta Ace 《How to Rap》p0101、p0109

How to expand(How to Rap p0065–p0068): Record new words while reading like a vacuum cleaner (MURS: read as many newspapers as possible, eight comics a week, plus a novel or biography); Interest in a certain subject can expand your word domain (use words like amoeba and paramecium to create cognitive contrast); Crossword puzzles, spelling games, watching the news, chatting with people; use a dictionary to confirm context, look up etymology, and find synonyms and antonyms.

★★ But vocabulary size is not the goal, these are three mutually balancing statements:

Statement Who said it Source
Look at your target audience: if the audience is other rappers, you can use more obscure words; for the general public, you have to be colloquial——"In the end it's about making people understand what you're saying. Complex or simple is fine, as long as they understand" — 《How to Rap》p0066
Use layman's terms as much as possible, but don't be boring Del the Funky Homosapien 《How to Rap》p0067
Biggie's vocabulary wasn't large,"he just combined words very smoothly, and that worked extremely well for him" Big Daddy Kane on Biggie 《How to Rap》p0066
Over-relying on the dictionary makes you seempretentious K-Os 《How to Rap》p0069

★ Self-check action: In one verse, how many words are ones you wouldn't normally say yourself? More than three → ask about each one, "Is it here because the meaning is right, or because it rhymes/fits the meter/looks impressive?"

7.2 Slang and Its Shelf Life

Slang gives the content color and pins the songtoa specific time, place, or movement(《How to Rap》p0060)。

Point Content Source
★ Slang changes with the culture Q-Tip: in the 1960s people said groovy, later dope, now hot—the same emotion, different words 《How to Rap》p0061
Slang is a personal signature Omar Cruz: dialect and slang are key to setting an MC apart from a uniform sound 《How to Rap》p0061
Regional binding E-40 used a string of Bay Area hyphy slang at the end of "Tell Me When to Go" (ghost-ride the whip, thizz face, go stupid) 《How to Rap》p0062
Slang can set the theme N.O.R.E.'s "Oh No" came from a few slang terms from his block 《How to Rap》p0062
Group-private slang Wu-Tang Clan is known for dense, group-exclusive slang, giving their tracks a unique and instantly recognizable texture 《How to Rap》p0063
You can coin your own Snoop's "Drop It Like It's Hot" turns word endings into "-izzle" 《How to Rap》p0062

★★ Expiration condition (shelf life):Slang pins a song to a point in time, which is both its function and its risk. Read the Q-Tip point (p0061) in reverse and you get:Using current slang means choosing to make this song sound like it belongs to a certain era a few years from now.

  • Wantlong-lasting(substance in §5.4) → use less time-sensitive slang, or only use what has already stabilized
  • Wantregional identity/era feel → use it, and use it accurately (using it wrong is worse than not using it)

Self-check action: For each slang term, ask, "Have I ever used it myself when speaking". No → delete it; it was probably copied from someone else's song.

7.3 Proper Nouns

Proper nouns (names of people, places, brands, works) are the most powerful and also the most fragile category in rap vocabulary. The usages in the source text all carry the same mechanism:they pack a concrete world into two or three syllables at once— Masta Ace's "as fake as a tooth-fairy", Chino XL's Medusa, Canibus's anti-lock brakes ("How to Rap" p0058, p0072) all depend on the listener recognizing that name to work.

Benefit Risk
One name equals a whole passage of description, extremely syllable-efficient ★ If the listener doesn't recognize it, that line is effectively empty
Establishes a concrete time and place (same as §7.2) Like slang, it has a shelf life
Provides ready-made multisyllabic rhyme material ★ Names pulled in just to make a rhyme are the easiest to expose

Self-check actions (two questions):

  1. This nameif removed, what is left of this line? Nothing left → it is occupying the place of real content
  2. Was it thought of first, orthought of only to rhyme with the previous line? The latter → replace it (or, per §3.3②, change it to align with the rhythm and drop the rhyme)

8. Writing process

The complete eight sections of the writing process (words first or flow first, how various MCs do it, freestyle versus written writing, methods for revising lyrics) are in reference.md。

9. ★ Transfer table for Chinese rap

Half of the techniques of English rap can be carried over as is, and the other half must be changed, for only two reasons: in Chinese, one character is one syllable, and every syllable carries a tone.

9.1 ★ Transfer table (the main table of this section)

# The approach on the English side Chinese How to change it / why
1 The concept of rhyme density(how many rhyme points per bar) ✅ Directly usable The trade-off between density and intelligibility (§2.4) is unrelated to language
2 Rhyme scheme(couplet / single-liner / multi-liner / whole verse / extra rhymes) ✅ Directly usable A rhyme scheme is the connective relationship between lines and does not depend on phonetic structure
3 Internal rhyme(rhyming within a line) ✅ Directly usable, andChinese makes it easier Chinese is monosyllabic, so any character can serve as a rhyme foot, unlike English, where you have to work it onto a word's stressed syllable
4 Vowel rhyme assonance ✅ Usable → corresponds torhyme categories The Chinese final system is itself a classification of vowel rhyme; for the thirteen rhyme categories table, see lw-mandarin
5 Consonance / alliteration ⚠ Weakened The Chinese initial system is small, and the syllable structure is "initial + final", so the alliteration effect is far less obvious than in English;use it as decoration, not as structure
6 Multisyllabic rhyme multies ★★ The approach must be changed, see §9.2 In English, a single word contains multiple syllables that can rhyme;in Chinese, to rhyme n syllables, you have to rhyme n characters in a row
7 Bending words ⚠ Restricted In Chinese, changing a vowel directly turns it into another character; the only things that can be bent aredialect soundsanderhua/neutral tone(see §9.3)
8 Stress landing on the beat ★★ Change the criterion Chinese does not have word stress like English; the anchor for landing on the beat instead usessemantic stress(the character in the sentence that is to be emphasized) andthe first character of a two-syllable word
9 The timeliness of slang ✅ Equally valid, with greater risk Chinese internet slang turns over faster than English slang
10 Proper nouns ✅ Equally valid Same as §7.3
11 punchline / wordplay / pun ✅ Directly usable, andChinese is stronger Chinese has a huge number of homophones, so pun material is far richer than in English
12 The metaphor trio ✅ Directly usable Language-independent
13 Content form(battle / story / concept / abstract / humor) ✅ Directly usable Language-independent
14 Not rhyming is also okay(§3.5) ✅ Usable, butthe perceptual cost is greater Chinese listeners perceive "rhymed or not" more binarily than English listeners—either it rhymes or it doesn't, there is no "almost rhymes"
15 Tone ★★ English does not have this item See §9.4

9.2 ★★ How Chinese does multisyllabic rhyme

This is the item in the transfer table that most needs to be expanded.

English multisyllabic rhyme relies ona single word having multiple syllables internally(mockeries / dropping these), Chinese has one syllable per character, so Chinese "multisyllabic rhyme" has only one path:

rhyming several adjacent characters in a row.

Method Explanation Which English item it corresponds to
Double rhyme(rhyming two characters in a row) The most commonly used tier. The final two characters of two lines have matching finals Corresponds to the minimal form of compound rhyme (How to Rap p0100)
Triple rhyme and above Density and technical feel increase sharply, but the demand on vocabulary also increases sharply Corresponds to multies of the Kool G Rap type (p0101)
Phrase against phrase Use two words combined to rhyme with another multi-character phrase—Speech's item also holds in Chinese 《How to Rap》p0101
Not everything has to be perfect ★ Borrow Wu-Tang's item:as long as one place in a block has exactly the same final to hold it up, the rest can merely be in the same rhyme category 《How to Rap》p0100–p0101
Connect by rhythm(§3.3②) When you cannot find a multi-character rhyme, let the two blockshave the same number of characters and the same pause positions 《How to Rap》p0103
Partial linking(§3.3③) Hang scattered same-rhyme characters on the main rhyme block; there is no need to make them into a complete multi-character rhyme 《How to Rap》p0104

★★ Chinese double rhyme has a pitfall that English does not have: When rhyming two characters in a row, the first character is often forced to be chosen from a very small candidate set. The consequence is that everyone rhymes the same few groups (things like "…的心 / …的人"). The way to break it: move the position of the double rhyme fromthe end of the linetothe middle of the line(§9.1 item 3: Chinese does internal rhyme more easily than English), or change it to rhythm alignment according to §3.3②.

Self-check action: after writing a section, copy all the rhymesvertically into one column. If two or more groups of exactly the same pairing appear → replace one of them.

9.3 Chinese can only "bend" three things

English bending words rely on changing vowel pronunciation (arms / Mom's). If Chinese changes the vowel, it becomes a different character. The only things that can move are:

What can be bent Explanation Failure condition
Dialect pronunciation Read a certain character in a dialect to make it enter another rhyme category ★ If the listener doesn't know that dialect, they only hear "pronounced it wrong"
Erhua and neutral tone Erhua changes the final, and neutral tone weakens the presence of the rhyme Erhua may not necessarily be audible to non-northern listeners
Loanwords and English words Mixing Chinese and English rhymes is a standard technique in Chinese rap Mixing too much will make the intelligibility of §2.4 collapse outright

★ Failure conditions (shared): the above three thingsEach one lowers intelligibility, and it's the same account as §2.4—before using it, first confirm how much intelligibility budget this song has left.

9.4 ★★ Tone: the item English completely lacks

Every syllable in Chinese carries a tone, which brings two things that don't exist in English:

① Rap section: tone does not affect rhyming, but it affects whether it "flows". Rhyme categories only look at the final, not the tone—so "tian / nian / dian / dian" are all in the same category. But if several consecutive rhymesall have the same toneit will seem flat, all have different tonesit will seem scattered. Self-check action: write the tones of the rhymes in a section as a string of numbers (1 2 4 1 3 …), all the same → replace one or two; no repetition at all → at least make the two before the hook have the same tone.

② Half-sung hook: the tone must pass the inverted-character test. ★★ The rap section has no fixed pitch, so inverted characters do not apply——lw-tone-check judges the melodic interval entering a character; a spoken section has no such interval to judge. But hip-hop hooks are oftenmelodic(the MC in the book says that currently sung hooks are more popular than spoken ones, 《How to Rap》p0202), as soon as a melodic hook appears, inverted characters immediately apply。

→ Every character in the hook must pass lw-tone-check; rhyme categories and level-oblique go to lw-mandarin。 Failure condition: the whole song is rap, and the hook is also spoken → no need to check inverted characters. As long as the hook has a definite pitch direction, this test must be passed。

9.5 Intelligibility of Chinese rap: tighter than English

Three overlapping reasons:

  1. Many homophones → higher probability of mishearing
  2. One character per syllable → the same amount of information takes more syllables, and once density is high it gets muddy
  3. Tones get flattened in fast recitation → resolution drops further

★ So the intelligibility test in §2.4 must be done more strictly in Chinese: For story-type and conscious-type Chinese rap, the recommended rhyme density falls at2 places per bar, leaving the remaining syllables to the content. If you want to show off density, go write battle and braggadocio— those two types don't rely on understanding it the first time anyway (§5.1).

10. Self-check after writing

Content

  • is setcontent form(§5), rather than just having one subject
  • Story type:confirmed line by line that no line was dragged out by the rhyme(§5.2)
  • Concept type: can state this concept'sthree different sides(§5.3)
  • At least one line can stand being read aloud on its own punchline(§6.3)
  • Unrelated metaphors within one barno more than two(§6.1)

Rhyme

  • Setthe target rhyme density, and wrote the rhyme count of each bar as a string of numbers (§2.3)
  • That string of numbersis not the same from beginning to end
  • The rhyme endings were copied out vertically into a column and checked, there are no two or more completely identical pairings(§9.2)
  • Usedassonance/same rhyme category, not only perfect rhyme (§3.1)
  • The whole songhas more than one rhyme scheme(§4.2)
  • The single most important line in the whole songwas not changed for the sake of rhyming(§3.5)

Vocabulary

  • Every slang term was asked "have I ever used it when I speak"(§7.2)
  • Every proper noun was asked "after removing it, what is left of this line"(§7.3)
  • Words I would not normally sayno more than three(§7.1)

Process

  • First used nonsense syllablesto lay out the grid, and after filling in the words went back and checked the rhythm (§8.2)
  • Asked line by line "because of what I want to say, or because it rhymes", the latter no more than 4 lines (§8.3)
  • Didan intelligibility test: read it aloud to someone and have them retell what happened (§2.4)

Chinese

  • Went through the §9.1 transfer table, knowing which items were changed and why
  • The rhyme endings'tone stringwas checked (§9.4①)
  • ★ If the hook is melodic,went through lw-tone-check(§9.4②)

Boundary

  • The landing points and rests of the flow use the flow diagram from §2.2, no separate notation was invented
  • delivery (pitch/volume/timbre/length)was not written into the lyric draft, it belongs to rap arrangement and vocal coaching

Appendix: Sources

  • Main sources: Paul Edwards, "How to Rap: The Art and Science of the Hip-Hop MC", and Paul Edwards, "How to Rap 2: Advanced Flow and Delivery". Both are compilations of interviews with over a hundred MCs, sothe books themselves already place contradictory statements side by side—— this skill preserves that side-by-side placement and indicates who said what.
  • The parts of these two books that discuss the position of vocals in the arrangement, the relationship between flow and the beat, and delivery are not included in this skill—— that is the business of rap arrangement (composition and arrangement) and vocal coaching. This skill only covers the lyrics themselves, plus the flow diagram notation from §2.2 ("How to Rap" p0080–p0085) and the lengths of hook/verse (p0201–p0208).
  • The Chinese rap section (§9) re-derives the source text's English conclusions according to the phonological structure of Chinese, not copied from the books——the books contain no Chinese material. The basis for the derivation is written in each item's "how to change / why", and can be rebutted item by item. The material on rhyme categories and tones is in lw-mandarin and lw-tone-check。
  • The big tables (rhyme scheme comparison, content-form checklist, MC statements side by side, Chinese rhyme-ending material) are in reference.md。
