About this skill

中国风歌词(Chinese Style)

This skill handles one thing: making the China in a lyric not pasted on, but grown out of it. Vocabulary, rhetoric, imagery as complete sets, and the measure of allusion are all here. ★ It is the L3 style layer, and does not replace any L1/L2—theme, imagery method, and rhyme category and tonal patterns still follow their own skills.

1. Constituent requirements of Chinese-style lyrics

1.1 An operable criterion: every keyword can be traced to a source

The very format of Vincent Fang's book is the criterion:first the original lyrics are presented, then annotations are made on the cultural background, etymology, and allusions of the Chinese-style imagery or keywords appearing in the lyrics(Vincent Fang p0011). For the thirty-four lyrics in the book, it organizesone hundred twenty-ninesources of wording (Vincent Fang p0009, p0193).

★ Use it in reverse, and you get a hard criterion: Can you say what that classical-sounding word in your lyrics is, where it comes from, and which dynasty it belongs to? If you cannot, it is just a character that "looks very Chinese"; readers will not press you on it, but you yourself will feel insecure— and that insecurity will keep you from letting it bear anything in the whole passage, so it degrades into decoration.

Vincent Fang himself explained the motive for this book: pop lyrics lean toward colloquial speech and emotion, some meanings lack room for discussion in the text, so simply publishing a lyrics collection would be inappropriate (Vincent Fang p0008). ★ "Being able to withstand annotation" is the dividing line between Chinese-style lyrics and ordinary lyrical lyrics.

1.2 The families of vocabulary

The one hundred twenty-nine annotations in the bookare not random; they cluster in a few families. When writing Chinese style, take vocabulary from these families:

Family Words appearing in the book (examples) Page
Geography and territory the northern frontier, Jiangnan, Chang'an, the Central Plains, the Nine Provinces, Dunhuang, the Mongolian Plateau, the Bund, Mudanjiang Vincent Fang p0016, p0017, p0051, p0059, p0045
Dynasties and historical events Eastern Han, Three Kingdoms, the Zhenguan era, the Yellow Turban Rebellion, 1943 Vincent Fang p0058, p0054, p0060, p0019
Objects and crafts blue-and-white porcelain, Xuan paper, sky-blue color, bronze mirror, scroll bar, embroidered shoes, qipao, nü'er hong Vincent Fang p0111, p0112, p0113, p0077, p0083, p0117, p0121
Identities and trades waiter, female warrior role, storyteller, living Buddha Vincent Fang p0015, p0029, p0103, p0065
Calligraphy, painting, and the scholar's study regular script, Han clerical script, Song typeface, splashed-ink landscape, painting of ladies, signature Vincent Fang p0020, p0113, p0083, p0112, p0084
Plants and colors willow, red bean, peony, banana, chrysanthemum, pear-blossom white, sky-blue color Vincent Fang p0015, p0017, p0112, p0114, p0097, p0087
Measures and currency three taels of silver (the tael was the statutory currency unit in the mid-to-late Ming dynasty) Vincent Fang p0016
Religion and classics meditation, stirring up dust, reincarnation, Sanskrit chanting, the Great Tibetan Canon, hexagram names from the Zhouyi Vincent Fang p0107, p0074, p0047, p0099, p0100, p0065
Medicine Compendium of Materia Medica, names of Chinese medicines, turtle jelly, cordyceps, Hua Tuo Vincent Fang p0089, p0090, p0091, p0092
Martial arts and the jianghu jianghu, martial arts world, horse stance, life-and-death contract, Huo family fist, kung fu Vincent Fang p0080, p0030, p0079, p0081, p0120
Opera and musical instruments Pingju, Qinqiang, cipai, pipa, erhu, wooden fish, transverse flute Vincent Fang p0119, p0121, p0083, p0041, p0030, p0108

★ Two properties you can use directly:

  1. These words are all nouns, and the vast majority can be photographed. "shop assistant" "three taels of silver" "embroidered shoes" "bronze mirror"—they naturally satisfy lw-song-intent the requirements of anchor_object . This is where Chinese-style vocabulary has its biggest advantage: the classical lexicon itself is a lexicon of concrete nouns.
  2. Every word carries a whole set of background associations. Example: "jianghu" originally meant the geographical Three Rivers and Five Lakes, in Zhuangzi it refers to a vast and carefree place, Fan Zhongyan used it in contrast to "the imperial court," and only in martial arts novels did it become the society in which heroes roam (Vincent Fang p0080). ★ When you use this word, you are inviting one of its layers of background into the lyric—invite the wrong layer, and the tone of the whole passage goes off.

See the full table at reference.md §1。

1.3 ★ Coined words also count as Chinese style

Chinese style does not mean you can only use words the ancients used.

For "wolf-fang moon" in Fa Ru Xue, the book explicitly notes:this word has not been cited in any ancient poetry; it first appears in this lyric, its function is to use the imagery of "wolf fang" to emphasize the bleakness and vastness of the scene (Vincent Fang p0073).

The criterion is not "the ancients used it," but "it belongs to that material world, and you can say what it is describing." A wolf fang is something that exists in that world, the moon is something that exists in that world, and the two combine into a new word—legitimate. ★ Conversely, if you combine two abstract words into an "ancient-style word" (for example, such-and-such zhi shang, such-and-such cheng shuang), what is synthesized is not an object, only a longer adjective.

1.4 What cipai teach us: Chinese style is naturally "lyric writing"

The book explains cipai very clearly:first there is a fixed cipai form, that is, a musical score, and the meaning of the lyric is then filled in according to the pattern, which is why it is called "tianci"; it is the same as modern lyrics, where the music comes first and the lyrics are filled in afterward(Vincent Fang p0083). A cipai only regulates the formal pattern of the lyrics and usually has nothing to do with the content; the same cipai can have many different lyrics (Vincent Fang p0083).

★ Two consequences:

Consequence Explanation
Chinese style mostly followsmusic first, lyrics afterward See lw-workflow §2. The melody is fixed first, and the number of characters and sentence patterns follow the melody
A cipai name can be used as title material, but it is not content Hua Lian Die swaps the cipai "Die Lian Hua" around to make the song title (Vincent Fang p0083, p0176)

2. Wordplay: sixteen rhetorical devices

The book is titled Wordplay in Lyrics, and its second part, "Rhetoric in Lyrics," explains sixteen rhetorical devices in detail(Vincent Fang p0009, p0123, p0193), each one illustrated with his own lyrics.

★ The way to use this section is not "pick a few and apply them," but rather to check in reverse: after writing a passage, see which ones can be recognized in it; if none of them match, that passage is probably just sentences, not lyrics.

2.1 First remember one thing: transformation is the trunk

In the same book, one song, "Blue and White Porcelain," is marked with eight types of techniques (metaphor,间隔 repetition, transformation, conversion, hyperbole, description, parallelism, and inversion; Fang Wenshan p0142–p0147), and the book's judgment on this song is:"The most frequently used technique in the lyrics of 'Blue and White Porcelain' is transformation."(Fang Wenshan p0144). In the line-by-line annotations for 'East Wind Breaks,' the most densely marked are likewise transformation and rhetorical question (Fang Wenshan p0134–p0135).

★ Transformation (turning abstract things into things you can touch) is the backbone technique of the Chinese style, and the other fifteen are its accessories. This also connects perfectly with lw-imagery §2:abstract nouns are the most direct source of an AI flavor, and transformation is the oldest set of methods in Chinese for handling abstract words——not deleting them, but giving them weight.

2.2 The Sixteen Items

For each item, give:the definition in the book → the example in the book → ★ failure conditions。

1 | Exclamation (Fang Wenshan p0124)

Beyond semantics, the tone clearly expresses strong emotions such as joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness; generally expressed through interjections and particles. Example: 'Dao Ma Dan' "A bowl of hot soup, ah, warmed me for a whole night" (Fang Wenshan p0124). ★ Failure: the interjection replaces the event. If two or more "ah/ya/xi" appear in one passage, the emotion becomes fill-in-the-blank.

2 | Metaphor (Fang Wenshan p0124)

"Using that to explain this," using a concrete and familiar object image to explain an abstract theme; composed ofvehicle + simile marker + ground. Example: 'Chess King' "The affairs of the world are like a chessboard"——"the affairs of the world" is the vehicle, "are like" is the simile marker, and "a chessboard" is the ground (Fang Wenshan p0124). 'Grandpa's Tea' "The tea Grandpa brewed, like a splash-ink landscape painting" (Fang Wenshan p0124). ★ Failure:the ground is more abstract than the vehicle. "Missing is like fleeting time"——both ends are intangible, which amounts to no comparison. → lw-imagery §5

3 | Repetition (Fang Wenshan p0125)

Repeatedly using the same word or phrase."Lei" is spaced repetition(repeated words / repeated sentences),"die" is continuous repetition(repeated characters / repeated sentences). Example: 'Little Little' "Little touches, rain falling in profusion, little spats make one ache" uses both repeated characters and repeated words, emphasizing childlike innocence (Fang Wenshan p0125); 'Lady' "Lovesickness sent by red beans, lovesickness sent by red beans" is a repeated sentence (Fang Wenshan p0125); 'Blue and White Porcelain' "Outside the curtain the banana leaves provoke a sudden rain, the door ring provokes verdigris, and I, passing by that Jiangnan town, provoked you" uses three "provoke" in a row (Fang Wenshan p0144). ★ Failure: the repeated word itself carries no information. The reason "provoke" can sustain three repetitions is that ithas the sense of actively provoking, giving life to the passive banana leaves and door ring(Fang Wenshan p0144)——if replaced with "de" or "le," it is merely verbose.

4 | Transformation / Personification (Fang Wenshan p0125–p0126)

"Zhuan" changes the nature of the described object, "hua" turns it into another essential category of thing; it can personify, objectify, or turn the abstract into the concrete. Example: 'East Wind Breaks' "A pot of wandering, roaming the ends of the earth, hard to swallow" "After you left, wine warms memory, longing grows thin" "A lamp of parting sorrow, standing alone at the window"—— the book's analysis is:abstract nouns such as "wandering," "roaming the ends of the earth," "longing," "parting sorrow," and "loneliness" are transformed into entities that can almost be touched, increasing the weight of the mood they represent.(Fang Wenshan p0126). In "Blue and White Porcelain," "your beauty drifts apart in a single wisp" turns abstract beauty into a thing that can drift like a wisp of mist, the boundary between person and object is blurred and ambiguous, and the meaning of the lyrics becomes profound and complex(Fang Wenshan p0145). ★ Failure: what is transformed is a clichéd abstract word that should have been deleted in the first place (time, youth, distant places). Transformation is not a pardon for abstract words,it merely gives them a measure word and a verb。

5|Parallelism (Fang Wenshan p0126)

Two or more sentences with the same or similar syntactic structure, expressing ideas of the same nature; the number of characters need not be the same. Example: in "Daughter's Red," "What's long is not an oval face, the personality is not gentle and demure, yet I happen to love embroidered shoes; by nature it's not phoenix eyes, the appearance is not classically beautiful either, yet I happen to love embroidered shoes" (Fang Wenshan p0126). ★ Failure: one of the three sentences is filler. The price of parallelism is thatevery sentence is placed on the same scale to be weighed, and the weaker sentence will be heard.

6|Hyperbole (Fang Wenshan p0126)

Especially exaggerated elaboration, clearly exceeding objective fact. Example: in "Zhou the Great Hero," "I stretch my fists and feet slightly, and you roll all the way to the frontier" (Fang Wenshan p0126); in "Blue and White Porcelain," "cooking smoke rises curl by curl, separated by the river for thousands upon thousands of miles"— the book says itexaggerates the distance of gazing across the river, corresponding to the waiting in the previous line, making it seem impossibly far away(Fang Wenshan p0145). ★ Failure: the whole song is exaggeration, with not a single true scale at the bottom.Hyperbole needs something unexaggerated as a reference("across the river" is real, and only then can "thousands upon thousands of miles" be exaggerated).

7|Conversion of Part of Speech (Fang Wenshan p0127)

Changing the customary part of speech of a word, for example turning an adjective or noun into a verb. Example: in "Hair Like Snow," "made the parting bleakly beautiful" "whom have I waited to grow old" (Fang Wenshan p0127); in "Blue and White Porcelain," "just treat it as me, foreshadowing to meet you"—"foreshadowing" is used as a verb from a noun (Fang Wenshan p0146); "your beauty drifts apart in a single wisp"—"a single wisp" is converted from a quantity word to an adverb (Fang Wenshan p0146). The book's judgment of the effect:using "made the parting bleakly beautiful" instead of "made the parting appear more bleakly beautiful" is more dynamic, and the more it reveals sorrowful poetry(Fang Wenshan p0127). ★ Failure: with two conversions of part of speech in one sentence, the sentence is no longer Chinese. At most one place per sentence。

8|Inversion (Fang Wenshan p0128)

Deliberately reversing grammatical order. Example: in "Blue and White Porcelain," "like a handed-down blue and white porcelain beautiful all on its own, your eyes carry a smile," the normal word order should be "your eyes carry a smile, like a handed-down blue and white porcelain beautiful all on its own" (Fang Wenshan p0128, p0146). The book's judgment:inversion does not change the meaning, but the mood is different; without inversion it is more plain and straightforward, and after inversion it gives people more room for imagination(Fang Wenshan p0146). ★ Failure: after inversionthe phrase breaks fall on the melody's breathing points, and when sung it is impossible to tell who is modifying whom.→ See lw-mandarin §4.2's "pause" and lw-structure

9|Imitation (Fang Wenshan p0128)

Write down the senses' perception of things, including sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Example (hearing): "Luan Wu Chun Qiu" uses the onomatopoeia of clashing sabers, staffs, and clubs to depict the battle situation (Fang Wenshan p0128); (sight) "Shuang Dao" "the moon directly overhead, that color Chinese yellow," "Shanghai 1943" "the setting sun slants across the mottled brick wall" (Fang Wenshan p0128); "Qing Hua Ci" "the white-bodied, blue-patterned koi leaps onto the bottom of the bowl" (Fang Wenshan p0146). ★ An example of three senses firing at once:"Outside the curtain the banana plant provokes the sudden rain, the door ring provokes the copper green"—— the book breaks it down for you:seeing the banana plant bent by the sudden rain (sight), the moisture seeping into the door ring and provoking a body of copper green (touch/sight), and at the ear there is still the patter of rain (hearing)(Fang Wenshan p0147). ★ Failure: it is all sight. The Chinese style is especially prone to being left with only imagery.→ lw-imagery §3's sensory distribution check

10|Quotation (Fang Wenshan p0128, p0130)

Citing ready-made phrases, divided intoexplicit quotation(directly marking the quoted text) andimplicit quotation(quoting only the gist, without marking it). Example: "Shuang Jie Gun" "practitioners of martial arts must remember, the benevolent are invincible" is quoted from Mencius (Fang Wenshan p0128); "Xiang Long Shi Ba Zhang"'s "the haughty dragon has regrets, the hidden dragon does not act, the appearing dragon is in the field, the flying dragon is in the sky" comes from the Zhou Yi (Fang Wenshan p0128, p0130; for the source of the hexagram names see p0065). ★ Failure: the quoted sentenceis not of the same origin as this song's material world. The book truthfully notes that "Shuang Dao"'s "an eye for an eye" comes from the Old Testament (Fang Wenshan p0128)—— An external allusive source is not unusable, but you must know that you are mixing blood, and doing so deliberately.→ §3.3

11|Character analysis (Fang Wenshan p0130)

Taking apart the form, sound, and meaning of characters, breaking fixed semantics. Example: "Ju Hua Tai" "sorrow, do not cross the river, autumn heart split in two"——the second half refers to the preceding character "sorrow," playing with a change in the character's form; the book's interpretation is:sorrow is the union of autumn and heart, forcibly split apart, perhaps never able to return to the romance originally imagined(Fang Wenshan p0130). ★ Failure:Character analysis is for the eyes, not for the ears. It holds only under one condition—— like this line, singing out the split character and the two halves split from it in the same line, only then can the ear catch it. A decomposition relying only on character form (understood only by looking at the lyric booklet) is equivalent to zero in listening perception.

12|Contrast (Fang Wenshan p0130–p0131)

Setting two different, especially opposite, ideas side by side for comparison;the stronger the contrast, the deeper the impression. Example: "Hua Lian Die" "you delicately touch and have everything of his, I am around you and you do not feel it"——what is set in contrast is one side possessing everything and the other possessing nothing (Fang Wenshan p0130); "Xiang Long Shi Ba Zhang" "forging cowardice into furnace fire" (Fang Wenshan p0131). ★ Failure: both sides of the contrast are abstract concepts.Contrast must land on two concrete things(one piece of his clothing ⇄ one empty chair of mine), otherwise it is merely two antonyms placed side by side.

13|Rhetorical question (Fang Wenshan p0131)

Use a question instead of a statement to attract attention and give the tone variation. Example: "East Wind Breaks" — "Who is playing on the pipa, a song of East Wind Breaks?" — the book directly makes the comparison: If you use "Someone is playing on the pipa, a song of East Wind Breaks," it feels much weaker; using the rhetorical question method adds a bit of suspense and makes the layers of meaning richer(Vincent Fang p0131). "Faraway" — "When the dream wakes, who is at the windowsill, opening the ending?" (Vincent Fang p0131). ★ Failure: asking more than three times in one lyric.A question only has power if it is not answered; ask too many times and it becomes as if no one is speaking.

14|Hypotyposis (Vincent Fang p0131–p0132)

Use imagination to concretely present past, future, or scenes not before one's eyes. Example: "Sacrificial Wine for Souls" — "Beacon fires in the human world, war drums shake the sky. Swallows flying from afar bring, smoke of war" (Vincent Fang p0131); "Curse of the Golden Flower" — "Banners like rainbows, mountain piles stacked like peaks. This army winds like a dragon, killing intent like wind, blood-colored like wine red" (Vincent Fang p0132). ★ Failure: the scene presentedhas nothing to do with where the speaker is at this moment, and becomes a pure backdrop. → Whose view the scene belongs to and when it can be seen, hand it to lw-narrative

15|Anadiplosis (Vincent Fang p0132)

Use the ending word of the previous line as the starting word of the next line. Example: "Curse of the Golden Flower" — "Emotion drifts and drifts, drifting a lifetime like me... a thousand troops and ten thousand horses, ten thousand horses galloping, that flesh-and-blood kin killing each other like a mistake" — the book says:using three "ten thousand horses" in succession, as if there really were a thousand troops and ten thousand horses surging in like a landslide(Vincent Fang p0132). ★ Failure: the seam of the anadiplosis falls exactly on the boundary of the musical phrase.Anadiplosis must link within the same breath; if the breath changes in between, the fun of the linkage is broken. → Hand it to lw-structure 's line breaks

16|Antithesis (Vincent Fang p0132; for strict and loose standards see Wang Li)

The upper and lower lines have equal character counts, similar syntax, and the same parts of speech, and sometimes also pay attention to matching tones。

  • Intralinear antithesis: in "Nunchucks," "ears steeped, eyes dyed," and in "Sacrificial Wine for Souls," "broken walls, ruined ramparts" — the two words before and after within the line form an antithesis with each other (Vincent Fang p0132)
  • Single-line antithesis: "Eighteen Dragon-Subduing Palms" — "Knock down vexation, capture sorrow" (Vincent Fang p0132)

How loose it can be(Wang Li, An Outline of Poetry and Ci Prosody, p0230–0231):

Loosening method Criterion
Opposition between neighboring categories also counts as a neat antithesis Direction versus color (north versus yellow), astronomy versus seasons (sun versus spring), and two things often mentioned together (flower versus bird, person versus horse) all count as neat
Need not be neat in every character For a five-character line, if four characters are neat it counts as a neat antithesis; for a seven-character line, if four or five characters are neat it counts
After intralinear self-antithesis, the antithesis between the two lines can be looser "Wind and dust" versus "tears": wind versus dust and tears versus tears are each already neat; between the two lines it is enough that the word classes correspond
Borrowed antithesis Borrow a homophone to form the antithesis: "white" versus "clear," because "clear" and "blue-green" are homophones. ★ This is a homophonic craft ready for use in lyrics

★ Antithesis in lyrics can use the same character(Wang Li, An Outline of Poetry and Ci Prosody, p0103): regulated verse forbids the same character in the paired lines,Ancient-style poetry can and often does repeat characters, “When drawing a bow, draw a strong one; when using an arrow, use a long one” “Cut water with a knife, and the water flows even more; raise a cup to drown sorrow, and the sorrow grows more sorrowful.” What lyrics use every day— “the more… the more…” “some people… some people…”—follows the ancient-style path, not the regulated-verse one, there is no need to avoid repeating characters。

Wang Li’s own closing words:one-sidedly pursuing neat parallelism does not achieve the goal of writing good poetry, late Tang parallelism is neater than High Tang, yet the poetry is not as good as High Tang (p0231). This sentence is the textual evidence for this entry’s "failure."

★ Failure: replacing a character with one no one would actually say just to force parallelism. ★ How to calculate tonal opposition is not here—go to lw-mandarin §3。Chinese-style parallelism only needs to "sound right when read aloud"; it does not have to follow regulated-verse standards.

2.3 How many to use in one passage

★ Hanging three to four in one passage of lyrics is already dense enough. The eight categories throughout "Blue and White Porcelain" (Fang Wenshan p0142–p0147) aredistributed across the whole song, not piled into one passage.

Symptom Judgment
three or four match within one passage, and each falls on a different sentence ✅
one sentence is simultaneously inversion + conversion + character analysis ❌ incomprehensible
not a single one in the whole passage matches ⚠ that passage may just be a transition;the verse and chorus are not allowed to have the whole passage fail to match

3. Imagery system: one lyric is one material world

★ The general method for making imagery systematic is in lw-imagery §4; this section only adds the layer specific to Chinese style: these things must belong to the same era, the same place, the same craft.

3.1 Six ready-made complete sets in the book

Lyric a complete set of vocabulary what the system is Page
"Wife" willow, waiter, three taels of silver, the northern frontier, inn, Jiangnan, red bean one person at an inn in the north, she waits in the south—geographical opposition sustains the whole song Fang Wenshan p0014–p0017
"Shanghai 1943" Spring Festival couplets, regular script, carved doors and windows, longtang alleys, white walls and black tiles, soft Wu speech, the Bund one city + one year Fang Wenshan p0018–p0021
"Blue and White Porcelain" unglazed clay body, blue-and-white, peony, xuan paper, painting of a court lady, sky-blue, Han clerical script, Song typeface, koi, banana plant the whole circle of literati objects drawn out by one piece of porcelain Fang Wenshan p0110–p0114
"Compendium of Materia Medica" nux vomica, cassia seed, Siberian cocklebur, angelica, goji, earthworm… a pharmacopoeia(the book notes these are all names of traditional Chinese medicine ingredients) Fang Wenshan p0090
"Chess King" chariot, horse, cannon, general, advisor, elephant, nine-palace grid, Chu River and Han Border, flying elephant crossing the river, sacrificing the chariot to save the general a chessboard Fang Wenshan p0070–p0071
"Eighteen Palms of the Auspicious Dragon" Haughty dragon regrets, hidden dragon do not use, see dragon in the field, flying dragon in the sky, riding six dragons at the proper time a 《周易》(The book notes that except for "双龙取水", which is taken from Buddhist scriptures, all the rest come from the hexagram names of the 《易经》) 方文山 p0065

★ Common point:Each one can be explained in a single sentence why "these things would appear in the same scene." If you cannot say this sentence, then that pile of words is just words. → write into imagery.system

3.2 The three dimensions of a set

If any one dimension does not match, it is a giveaway.

Dimension Question Example
Era Did this thing exist back then "Silver taels" arethe mid-to-late Ming dynasty's legal currency unit of account (方文山 p0016)—having people in a Tang dynasty story pull out silver taels is anachronistic
Geography Are these two things in the same place The northern frontier and Jiangnan are in the bookused in contrast(方文山 p0016); hutongs belong to Beijing, longtang belong to Shanghai, and are the counterparts of the two cities (方文山 p0013, p0021)
Trade Is this a word from the same craft Ru kiln's "sky-cyan color" (方文山 p0113), xuan paper (p0112), Han clerical script and Song typeface (p0113) are one line; mixing them with martial arts sects in one passage makes both sides lose their weight

3.3 ★ Two real samples of mashup giveaways

The book itself honestly notes two foreign elements—this is more convincing than any counterexample:

Sample What the book says Page
Nunchaku Originated in the Philippines, Bruce Lee learned about this weapon from Filipino martial artists;it was not listed among the eighteen kinds of ancient Chinese martial arts 方文山 p0023
"An eye for an eye" comes from the Old Testament 方文山 p0128

★ The point is not "these two places are written wrong"—both songs hold up. The point is: the author knew they were foreign.

A giveaway is not equal to using foreign things; a giveaway is not knowing it is foreign. If you know, you can decide whether to let it create an effect (a lyric about East-West mixing exactly needs a hamburger to appear in a hutong, 方文山 p0012), or replace it. If you do not know, it is there costing you points.

Similarly, the term "kung fu" comes from Cantonese in Guangdong and Guangxi and only became common in modern times; in ancient times it was called martial arts, martial skill, martial prowess(方文山 p0120)— Having a character in a costume-drama scene say "kung fu" is this kind of small giveaway.

3.4 Check actions

After writing a passage, copy all the nouns in it into a list, then ask one by one:

  1. Which dynasty is it from? If you cannot answer → look it up, or replace it
  2. Can it and the previous noun appear in the same courtyard?
  3. Can the whole list of nouns be explained in one sentence as their common source?(→ imagery.system)
  4. ★ Is there a word that was put in only "because it sounds ancient"?—that word is the first one that should be deleted

4. Allusions and adaptation

4.1 Explicit and Implicit Quotation

The classification in the book:Explicit quotation marks the quoted text directly; implicit quotation only borrows the general meaning of the original text without specially marking it; the function of allusion isto strengthen the persuasiveness of one's own writing through people's general respect for authoritative works(Fang Wenshan p0128).

★ In lyrics, it is almost all implicit quotation—becausethere is nowhere to put quotation marks, and also because when sung, quotation marks cannot be heard. So the real constraint on allusion in lyrics is:Even if this line is taken as something you wrote yourself, it still has to read smoothly.

4.2 The Four Tiers of Adaptation

From light to heavy, the book gives examples for every tier.

Tier Approach Book example Page ★ Boundary
One | Taking words as they are Directly use ready-made proper names or set phrases "Xianglong Eighteen Palms" directly uses the hexagram names from the Zhouyi as move names Fang Wenshan p0065, p0128 What is taken isthe name, not the sentence. Moving a whole sentence as-is into the chorus is no longer adaptation
Two | Splitting and using Split a line of poetry apart and blend the parts separately into different lines of lyrics "Fa Ru Xue" splits Li Bai's "raising a cup to invite the bright moon" into "raising a cup" and "inviting the bright moon," used separately Fang Wenshan p0077 ★ The book puts it extremely bluntly:"Only the circulation and familiarity of the poetic line are taken, with no relation to the meaning of the original line"(Fang Wenshan p0077)—splitting and using borrows only the familiarity, not the meaning
Three | Changing words to coin phrases Change one character in the original line to coin a new phrase "Fa Ru Xue" takes Li Bai's "in the morning like black silk, by evening it becomes snow," and adds the character "ru" between "fa" and "xue," yielding "fa ru xue" Fang Wenshan p0073 The new phrase must be able to stand on its own (see §1.3 Wolf Fang Moon)
Four | Reversing the use Borrow the allusion, but flip its conclusion "Hua Lian Die" uses the allusion from Shishuo Xinyu of comparing snow to willow catkins, yet writes "willow catkins drift everywhere, but after all they are not snow; the feeling can never be found again"—No matter how alike in spirit, willow catkins after all are not snow, used to express that feelings cannot return to how they were at the beginning Fang Wenshan p0084 ★ The highest level and also the most dangerous: listeners must first recognize the original allusion before they know you have flipped it

★ There is another kind of transformation: swapping ready-made names. "Hua Lian Die" swaps the cipai name "Die Lian Hua" around to formrole reversal in loveas an interesting effect (Fang Wenshan p0083, p0176).

4.3 Allusion can change the original meaning—but it must be accounted for in the lyrics

"Huang Jin Jia" is taken from Huang Chao's "Fu Ju After Failing the Exam": "Wait until autumn comes, the ninth month and eighth day... the whole city wears golden armor." The book points out one key thing:The poem's title contains "chrysanthemum," yet within the poem no chrysanthemum appears; "chrysanthemum" here loses its ordinary symbolic meaning, such as noble purity or steadfastness, and is instead used as a metaphor for golden armor, that is, the soldiers of rebellion(Fang Wenshan p0097).

★ This passage is the upper limit of the freedom of allusion: Things in allusions can be rewritten by you to mean something else, as long as you establish the new meaning firmly in this ci. If you can't establish it, then it's just a misuse.

4.4 What to do if the audience doesn't understand

This is the most practical problem in Chinese style. Three points:

# Approach Basis
1 Start with lines that are widely circulated The explanation in the book about dismantling and using them rests on "circulation and familiarity" (Fang Wenshan p0077)—Half the value of an allusion comes from its being recognized
2 ★ The literal meaning must stand on its own Even if they can't hear that "sky blue" is the allusion to Ru kiln (Fang Wenshan p0113), they can still understand that someone is waiting; The allusion is the second layer, not the only layer
3 Put the annotations outside the lyrics Fang Wenshan's way of handling this is to make a whole book of annotations for the lyrics (Fang Wenshan p0008–p0009)—★ Annotations absolutely must not be written into the lyrics(if sung, they will be read aloud)

★ Point 2 is hard: if a line of lyricsonly feels coherent to those who understand the allusion, then it is a bad line in a song. Poetry can make demands of the reader, songs cannot—A song can only be heard once.

5. Coordination with arrangement (writing only from the lyric side)

5.1 ★ Instruments named in the lyrics are a promise to the arrangement

The first line of the chorus of "Dong Feng Po": "Who is using a pipa to play a tune, Dong Feng Po," the book explains its literal meaning:using the pipa, this instrument, to play a qupo named "Dong Feng"(Fang Wenshan p0041).

★ Once this line is sung, there must really be a pipa in the arrangement. If an instrument is named in the lyrics but cannot be heard in the arrangement, that is one of the easiest flaws to catch in Chinese style— it is easier for ordinary listeners to notice than using the wrong allusion, because the ears can match it directly.

Instruments named in the book and given a character:

Instrument Character given in the book Page
Pipa First appeared in the Qin dynasty; "pushing the hand is pi, pulling the hand is pa"; in ancient poetry it has long beenparting sorrow, frontier fortresses, hidden resentmentbound together (Bai Juyi's "Pipa Xing," Wang Han's "Liangzhou Ci," Wang Changling's "Cong Jun Xing") Fang Wenshan p0041
Erhu A kind of huqin; its name first appears in the Tang dynasty, and it is named for having only two strings Fang Wenshan p0030
Transverse flute Tradition says it was introduced after Zhang Qian was sent to the Western Regions during Emperor Wu of Han's reign; also called "hengchui";its sound is clear and far-reaching, lingering and melodious, able to draw out a person's deep feelings Fang Wenshan p0108
Wooden fish A Buddhist ritual instrument;before chanting sutras, strike it twice to settle the mind; during chanting, striking it can maintain mindfulness; the regular sound of the wooden fish gives the chanting rhythm Fang Wenshan p0108
Bangzi (jujube wood) A percussion instrument of Qinqiang; when struck it makes a clanging sound, so Qinqiang is also called "Bangzi qiang" Fang Wenshan p0121

★ The wooden fish entry is the most useful for arrangement: what the book says isIt was originally a thing for keeping time and steadying the mind—— The lyrics mention the wooden fish, so its place in the arrangement should be the rhythm layer, not a timbral embellishment.

5.2 Proper names of musical forms in the lyrics are not instructions for musical form

"Qupo" has a precise meaning in the book: Song dynasty daqu was divided into three sections—sanxu, paibian, and po—and "qupo" is a section that became independent from daqu (Fang Wenshan p0041).

⚠ What is written into the lyrics is this name, not this structure. Do not demand that the arrangement be in the three-part form of daqu just because the lyrics say "a song of East Wind Breaks." Musical form belongs to composition and arrangement.

5.3 What to hand over to composition and arrangement

What to hand over How to write it
Instrument named in the lyrics + which line it appears in Write into prosody.sections[].notes or the note field of LYR-SPEC, and indicate "named here on the lyric surface, the arrangement must deliver it"
Dynasty/regional setting Write into imagery.system—it will affect the timbral direction
Opera elements(Peking opera's singing, recitation, acting, and fighting; Qinqiang) Only mark "which opera genre is quoted in the lyrics" (Fang Wenshan p0119, p0121),singing style goes to vocal direction (voice), orchestration goes to composition and arrangement

★ Always out of scope: pentatonic modes and modal color, Chinese instrumental orchestration methods, tempo and texture, reference tracks → composition and arrangement. Inverted tones and harmonic coordination stay in this library (lw-tone-check、lw-cantonese), and the lexical tones to be observed when writing the melody are written in prosody and handed over (lw-workflow §6)。

6. The three most common failures

6.1 Piling up diction without events

Symptom: eight classical nouns in one section, and after reading it you cannot say what happened.

★ Criterion (measure it backward against complete lyrics in the book): The set of lyrics in "Wife" holds up because underneath there is one thing—a person at an inn north of the passes, while she waits in Jiangnan(Fang Wenshan p0014–p0016); Underneath "Shanghai 1943" isa person looking at an old house and old photographs(Fang Wenshan p0018). Vocabulary is the evidence of that thing, not a substitute for that thing.

Self-check: Cross out all adjectives and allusions in this section, leaving only verbs and nouns. Can what remains be assembled into an action? No → this section has no event.

★ Chinese style does not exempt lw-song-intent 's five questions. The greatest danger of classical vocabulary lies precisely here: it is so beautiful that it makes people think the concept is already there.

6.2 Imagery unrelated to the concept

Symptom: the imagery is beautiful and forms a coherent set, but if you replace the whole set of imagery, the thing this song wants to say does not change at all.

★ Criterion:Does this set of imagery serve only this one concept? The entire set of objects in "Blue and White Porcelain" (unfired clay, rice paper, sky-cyan, koi, banana plant, Fang Wenshan p0110–p0114) is bound towaiting— "Sky-cyan waits for misty rain, and I am waiting for you" overlaysglaze color must wait for specific weather to be firedthis thing (Fang Wenshan p0113) with waiting for a person into one sentence. The imagery and the theme interlock as one thing, rather than being placed side by side.

Self-check: Replace the entire set of imagery with another set (for example, from porcelain to tea) — will the theme change along with it? No change → this set of imagery is replaceable decoration.

6.3 Being Ancient for the Sake of Being Ancient

Three Specific Manifestations:

Manifestation How to Recognize It
Coining pseudo-classical words Two abstract words pieced together; the resulting thing cannot be photographed (compare with "wolf-tooth moon" in §1.3: both wolf-tooth and moon are physical objects)
Abuse of classical function words "Xi," "zhi," and "hu" are brought in solely to adjust the syllable count. ★ Function words must be counted into the syllables(lw-mandarin §1.2); they occupy a syllable yet carry no information
Dynasty-irrelevant stacking Objects from three dynasties appear in one section, yet the song is not about time travel

★ Final self-check:If this lyric uses no classical vocabulary at all, what remains? One thing, one person, one moment remain—then it is a good lyric, just dressed in ancient costume. Nothing remains—then the ancient costume is all there is.

7. Correspondence with LYR-SPEC Fields

Field This skill
meta.style_layer Fill in lw-chinese-style
meta.flow ★ Chinese style is mostly 先曲后词(the "fill in lyrics" tradition of cipai in §1.4)
imagery.concrete_nouns The vocabulary families in §1.2are naturally a concrete noun bank
imagery.system ★ must be written as "which dynasty / which place / which craft"(§3.1), not "classical imagery"
imagery.forbidden Write in the pseudo-classical words identified in §6.3
rhyme.che Belongs to lw-mandarin; ★ the level and oblique tones of parallel couplets also go there
prosody.sections[].notes Instruments named on the surface of the lyrics and their positions of appearance(§5.3)
narrative.pov / tense_anchor Belongs to lw-narrative; ★ the scenes of "shixian" in item 14 of §2 must hang on these two fields
asymmetry Belongs to lw-structure; ★ Chinese-style parallelism and antithesis are naturally symmetrical,anti-symmetry requires more effort

8. Self-check After Writing

  • Every classical keyword in the lyricscan be stated as to what it is, where it comes from, and which dynasty it belongs to(§1.1)
  • imagery.system is written asa sentence that can be stated clearly, not "Chinese-style imagery" (§3.1)
  • Copy all nouns into a single listand check each one's era / geography / trade(§3.4)
  • If there are foreign objects, they were deliberately placed in, and you can state why (§3.3)
  • Every use of allusion can be marked as belonging towhich tier of adaptation(§4.2); for the one used in reverse, confirm the audience recognizes the original source
  • ★ Every line reads literally even without understanding the allusion(§4.4 item 2)
  • Annotations, creation notesnot a single character entered the lyrics(§4.4 item 3)
  • Instruments named on the surface of the lyricshave already been written into the handoff fields, so only then can the composition and arrangement side deliver on them (§5.1)
  • ★ After crossing out all adjectives and allusions, the remaining nouns and verbs can be pieced together into an action(§6.1)
  • ★ Replace the entire set of imagery, and the thesis will change accordingly(§6.2)
  • The rhetorical devices in one stanzaThree to four, and distributed across different sentences(§2.3)
  • The place with character analysis and character-form wordplayThe ear can catch it(§2.2 item 11)
  • All function words are counted into the syllable count; there is no "xi" or "zhi" used purely to pad the character count (§6.3)

Appendix: Sources

  • All textual evidence comes from Vincent Fang, Zhongguo Feng: Wenzi Youxi in Lyrics (Jieli Publishing House, 2008), with page numbers counted by scanned page (Vincent Fang p0001–p0193). The book has three parts: annotations on key lyrics words (one hundred twenty-nine word sources, Vincent Fang p0009), rhetoric in lyrics (sixteen rhetorical devices, Vincent Fang p0009, p0123), and the lyrics grand quiz (Vincent Fang p0149).

  • ★ The "definitions" and "book examples" of all sixteen items in §2 come entirely from the book; The "failure conditions" for each item are self-drafted by this skill, based on the criteria of other skills in this library (lw-imagery abstract words,lw-mandarin pauses and singability,lw-structure line breaks).

  • ★ The three dimensions of §3.2, the checking actions of §3.4, the four-grade classification of §4.2, and the three kinds of failure and their self-checks in §6, are operational steps generalized from the examples in the book, the book does not list them in this form。

  • ⚠ the book never gives a definitional sentence for "Zhongguo Feng"; the criteria of §1.1 are reverse-engineered from the book's overall format (first list words, then annotate each key word, Vincent Fang p0011).

  • Quoted lyrics are always limited to the short phrases needed for analysis, and the sources are all the same book listed above.

  • The half that does not belong to this skill: the five tones, folk-music instrumentation, and musical form are matters of composition and arrangement, and this skill does not write about them; tone distortion and harmonic matching are in lw-tone-check、lw-cantonese。
