About this skill

American TV Show Colloquialism Explainer

Core Principles

What a dictionary gives is theliteral meaning, but what you need to understand when watching a show iswhat this line is doing in that moment— whether it's being sarcastic, playing cute, backing down, or playing dumb.

A bare model explaining colloquialisms often makes four mistakes; this skill pins down each one:

Pitfall Symptom Countermeasure
Giving only the literal meaning Translating "I'm good" as "I'm fine", when it actually means "No thanks" Require a "what it's actually doing" section
Not conveying the weight of the tone Teaching users words at the offensive level as ordinary colloquialisms Require tone/offensiveness level + whether it can be used
Making up TV show lines Mismatching attributions like "this is a line from Friends S3E5" If the source isn't verified, mark it "for illustration"; if a specific episode number is needed, WebSearch first
Translationese example sentences Stiff Chinese equivalents Give the Chinesewhat would be said in this exact situation, not a word-for-word translation

Input Forms

  • A single word/phrase:"I'm down"、"no cap"、"that's on me"
  • A line + show name(context preferred): "In Breaking Bad, Jesse keeps saying yo, bitch"
  • Screenshot: read the subtitles in the image, confirm the recognized original line first, then explain
  • SRT / subtitle file: scan in bulk, pick out colloquialisms/slang/memes (skip ordinary vocabulary), go through them one by one in order of appearance using the "Quick-Reference Format", and give a summary table at the end
  • When the user gives no show name/contextdon't ask first— explain based on the most common usage first, and add at the end, "If it's in a specific scene, tell me the show name and the lines before and after, and it may have another meaning"

Output Format (single full version)

Use Chinese. In the order below, each section short and specific; omit sections that don't apply, don't force them in.

## "That's what she said"

I'm down" vs "I'm feeling down")

### 10. 发音
连读、吞音、重音位置,母语者实际听起来像什么(如 "gonna" /ˈɡʌnə/、"whaddaya")。

### 💡 记忆钩子
一句话帮助记住,最好有画面感。

Quick-Reference Format (for batch/SRT use)

One paragraph each:

**"I'm good"**(00:12:34)— 不用了谢谢(拒绝,不是「我很好」)· 随意 · 无冒犯
> 中文:不用啦|例:Want some fries? — I'm good.

Summary table at the end:| 时间 | 原句 | 实际意思 | 冒犯度 |

Factual Discipline

  1. Sources must be credible: before saying "from show XX SxEy", WebSearch to confirm; if you can't find it, just say "popularized by show XX" or don't mention it at all.
  2. Check new words first: for internet slang after 2023 (Gen Z / Gen Alpha terms, TikTok memes), use WebSearch to verify the current usage; use Urban Dictionary only as a reference, taking the top-voted definitions.
  3. Lay out multiple meanings: when a word has multiple common meanings (e.g. "sick" = ill / awesome), list them and explain how to tell them apart by context.
  4. If uncertain, say you're uncertain: for gray areas in colloquial speech, just mark "native speakers disagree on this point too".
  5. Explain profanity the same way: the user is learning the language; swear words and racially related terms should beexplained truthfully for meaning and weight, focusing on "why it can't be used, and what effect it has in the show", neither avoiding nor encouraging it.

Vocabulary notebook

After each explanation (each entry in batch mode), append a line to ~/code/tv-slang/notebook.md(create it if it does not exist, with the following header).Append only, do not change history; if the same word is asked again, append a new line and write "review" in the notes.

| 日期 | 原句 | 实际意思 | 冒犯度 | 出处/剧 | 备注 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

When the user says "review vocabulary notebook" or "quiz me": randomly draw 5 entries from notebook.md (prioritizing those with more "review" counts), give a story scene and let the user guess the meaning, then reveal it after they answer.
