Skill for the preparatory stage: gather facts, test hypotheses, and record confidence before the next planning stage or subsequent implementation in a separate request.
This is an orchestrator skill: it only manages the investigation through the /debugger subagent. The orchestrator itself does not write code, does not edit files, does not draw up a fix plan, and does not substitute for the next planning stage or the implementation and verification stage.
Positioning
- Needed when it is important to get to the bottom of the cause (or honestly record that there is not enough data), rather than immediately "proposing a fix".
- The result is a package of evidence and conclusions for the next planning stage, further discussion, or subsequent implementation in a separate request.
- It is forbidden to jump from the investigation into an implementation plan, direct code edits, or the implementation and verification stage loop.
READONLY (mandatory)
By its nature, the entire workflow is strictly READONLY:
- allowed: reading code, searching the repository, reading logs/test output, viewing configs, non-destructive reproduction (for example, opening a page, capturing a network/console snapshot, locally running an already existing read-only command, if this does not change the environment).
- forbidden: editing files, generating patches, migrations, commits, a "quick fix", drawing up a fix plan, creating a todo plan for implementation.
- if reproduction requires a step that potentially changes the world (writing to the production DB, destructive CLI flags, data deletion, payments, mass changes to external systems, actions under an admin account without explicit permission) — stop and escalate to a human; do not perform the step on behalf of the agent.
MANDATORY rules
- Delegate the main work to the /debugger subagent so as not to bloat the main context with long detours.
- DO NOT GATHER и DO NOT ANALYZE the problem yourself, delegate the work to the /debugger subagent.
- Pass to the subagent's prompt the minimally sufficient context: symptom, version/environment, reproduction steps, what is already known, READONLY constraints, and the boundaries of the investigation.
- Evidence matters more than guesses: require references to specific files/lines/logs/symptoms; do not mix unverified hypotheses with conclusions.
- The orchestrator assembles the subagent's response and, if necessary, asks one narrow follow-up to a second /debugger run if one check is missing — without turning it into an infinite loop.
- The outcome of the investigation must be ready for planning: it is clear what is proven, what is discarded, what is unknown, and what next human or planning step is appropriate.
- Do not mix this investigation with subsequent code implementation or "make a fix" in one run — first the investigation, then separately the next planning stage or subsequent implementation at the user's discretion.
Subagent /debugger
Rules for choosing the tier and model family — subagent-model-tiers.
- model: analytics
Before each /debugger run, determine the tier and model family according to subagent-model-tiers.
Below is the contract of the subagent: it is sufficient to launch the /debugger subagent and verify the response, without external specifications.
Tasks
- reproduce or clarify the reproduction conditions (non-destructively);
- collect evidence (code, tests, logs, UI/network observations);
- formulate hypotheses, verify them and explicitly discard those that were not confirmed;
- indicate the affected areas and the level of confidence;
- do not fix code, do not generate patches and do not compose an implementation plan;
- do not substitute for the next planning stage or the executor of the next implementation step;
- if data is insufficient, do not speculate about the root cause — record the blocker and the required inputs.
READONLY restrictions (for /debugger)
In addition to the general READONLY workflow above, the subagent:
- does not edit files, does not create commits, migrations, deployment/config changes for the sake of investigation;
- distinguishes fact (observation, code/log quote, reproducible step), conclusion и hypothesis — does not mix them without verification;
- permitted non-destructive reproduction (reading, searching, safe viewing of UI/network/console — without writing others' data);
- prohibited to perform actions that create, change, or delete entities in systems (DB writes, payment, mass changes via UI/API, admin operations, destructive CLI) — in any environment; such a step should only be described minimally and escalated to a human;
- does not propose a step-by-step fix plan and does not present "do this in the code" as a ready-made fix specification — at most materials for future planning (questions, candidate locations, verification criteria);
- if the parent passed
Resolved context, use the listed paths as a priority and do not expand the traversal unnecessarily.
Input (orchestrator → /debugger)
Pass:
- symptom description and expected vs actual behavior;
- known reproduction steps and environment;
- investigation boundaries and READONLY constraints;
- list of what has already been checked by a human (if any);
- minimal pointers: file paths, read-only/safe-run commands, links.
Do not pass:
- full chat history by default;
- requests to “immediately make a plan” or “immediately fix it” — these are outside the /debugger role.
/debugger response format
Response in Russian, briefly, with verifiable references to artifacts. Each report section is a separate heading of level ### с exact text of the name below; the order is fixed.
- Result — one of:
root cause найден/сужено до небольшого набора гипотез/заблокировано: не хватает данных или доступа - Symptom and reproduction — what breaks, expected vs actual, steps, or “not reproducible — why”
- What was checked — list of checks with a brief summary of each (what was looked at → what was found)
- Discarded hypotheses — hypothesis → why discarded (link to evidence)
- Root cause — if found: chain of cause-and-effect relationships; if not — explicitly “not established” and the reason for the uncertainty
- Evidence — bulleted list of the strongest clues (files/lines/logs/observations)
- Affected areas — modules, services, public contracts, configuration, external dependencies
- Unknowns and risks — what remains unclear; risk of an erroneous conclusion; what neighboring thing may break
- What to pass to planning — specific questions, candidate places for changes (without fix design), acceptance criteria for a future plan, requests to the human (logs, access, flags)
Priorities in case of conflicting goals: (1) honesty and verifiability of conclusions, (2) READONLY and safety, (3) minimally sufficient response volume, (4) usefulness for the subsequent planning stage.
Prompt for the subagent
<необходимый контекст>
Format of the final investigation result (orchestrator → user)
After the /debugger response, the orchestrator gives the user a brief summary:
Investigation status
- one of:
root cause найден/сужено до небольшого набора гипотез/заблокировано: не хватает данных или доступа
Brief summary
- 3–7 bullets: what happened, the main conclusion, the level of confidence
Key evidence
- a list of the strongest evidence (with a reference to the subagent's report: files, logs, observations)
Open questions
- what the person needs to provide or decide before planning
Next step (without a remediation plan)
- one phrase: for example "hand the conclusion over to the next planning stage" or "logs X from prod for period Y are needed"
Prohibited in this summary: implementation steps, patches, code effort estimates — only a frame for future planning.
Workflow / investigation cycle
Starting an investigation — only via /debugger.
- Clarify with the user the symptom, the environment, and the "done" criterion if it is impossible to start safely without this.
- Run /debugger with compressed context and explicit READONLY constraints.
- Check that the response contains verified facts, discarded hypotheses, and an explicit confidence status.
- If one narrow gap blocks the status (for example, one log fragment is missing), ask the user for or do one additional narrow /debugger run.
- Form the final summary according to the section "Format of the final investigation result".
- Stop: further action — only at the user's explicit request (planning, subsequent implementation upon a separate request, etc.).
Permissible outcomes
- Root cause found: the cause is confirmed by a chain of evidence.
- Narrowed to a small set: 2–3 plausible explanations remain, for each one it is stated how to distinguish it and what else to check.
- Blocked by lack of evidence: no access, no logs, not reproducible within READONLY constraints — record what is missing.
Any outcome is not a permission to proceed to implementation within this skill.
Escalation
Immediately stop the investigation and hand it over to a human if:
- a destructive or irreversible step is needed for reproduction;
- secrets/accesses that are not available are required;
- an external system requires actions with legal/financial consequences;
- the user's request effectively asks to “make a fix” or “draw up a plan” — suggest moving this into a separate request after the investigation.
Briefly describe the blocker, what is already known, and what minimal human input will remove the blocker.
