Analyze the paper PDF and generate a "pre-reading navigation." Since the purpose is for the user to grow by reading the paper themselves, do not summarize the content on their behalf; instead, guide the structure and terminology in advance to improve reading efficiency.

Phase 1: Reading the Paper
Extract the text from the PDF using pymupdf or similar and read the full text. Things to identify at this stage:
- Paper type: review paper, quantitative study, qualitative study, meta-analysis, theoretical paper, etc.
- Section structure: title, page range, and role of each section
- Key variables: independent variables, mediators, dependent variables (for quantitative studies)
- Technical terms: list of terms that are difficult to understand without prior knowledge
- Key tables/figures: numbers of the tables or figures that form the heart of the paper
Phase 2: Zotero Tag Recommendations
Based on the paper content, recommend 3–7 tags to attach in Zotero.
Tag selection rules:
- Use Korean consistently (the language the user would naturally think of when searching)
- For proper nouns/theory names, add a tag with the original-language term alongside it when needed (e.g.,
좌절-공격 가설+frustration-aggression) - For quantitative studies, include the independent variables, mediators, and dependent variables each as tags
- Include a study type tag (e.g.,
양적연구,리뷰논문,질적연구,메타분석) - Include a field tag (e.g.,
사회심리학,상담,발달심리,가족복지)
Tag table format:
| Tag | Reason |
|---|---|
{태그명} |
{one-line explanation of why this tag is applied} |
Wrap tag names in backticks so the user can copy and paste them directly in Zotero.
Phase 3: Reading Guide Body
3.1 "What is this paper trying to do?"
Explain the background and context in 2–3 sentences. At a level where even someone unfamiliar with this field can feel, "Ah, so that kind of problem exists." Use everyday language instead of academic terms.
Below that, add a one-line summary: the paper's core claim in one sentence in everyday language.
3.2 Paper Structure Preview
| Page | Section | Role | Reading tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| p.XX | {section name} | {what this section does} | {pace control + focus point} |
Rules for writing reading tips:
- Pace guidance: "skim lightly," "read slowly," "read with focus"
- Focus points: "focus on the definition," "just check Table 3," "read only the conclusion paragraph"
- Highlight the 1–2 most important sections with a ⭐ mark
- When the paper is long: guide sections that can be skipped ("you can come back to this part later when needed")
3.3 Terms You Need to Know in Advance
| Term | 뜻 | In simple terms |
|---|---|---|
| {English term} ({Korean}) | {Academic definition} | {Everyday analogy or simple explanation} |
Selection Criteria: Include only terms that are difficult to understand without prior knowledge. Also include basic terms that anyone majoring in the field would naturally know (since the user has weaknesses in structuring). For the "In simple terms" column, use analogies, everyday situations, or one-line comparisons.
3.4 Research Model Diagram (for quantitative research)
If there is a research model such as structural equation modeling, regression analysis, or a mediation/moderation model, visualize the relationships between variables as an ASCII diagram. Leave it blank so the user can fill it in while reading which arrows are significant and which are not.
3.5 Worksheet
Create questions in a fill-in-the-blank format to be completed while reading the paper. Since it is structured as answering set questions rather than free-form notes, it prevents concentration from wandering.
Worksheet Question Writing Rules:
- Each question points to a specific section/page of the paper (clearly indicating where to find the answer)
- Focus on questions asking "Why?" and "How?" rather than simple fact-checking
- For quantitative research, include structured questions such as "Mark with O/X which paths are significant"
- The number of questions is proportional to the paper's length: short papers (10p)은 Q1Q5, long papers (20p+) Q1~Q8
- The last two questions are always fixed:
- "My thoughts": The part that was most interesting or raised questions while reading
- "Parts I don't understand": Parts that are not understood or need further explanation
- If you don't know,
?guide them to leave it as
Phase 4: Save
Filename Rules: {대표저자}_{연도}_읽기가이드.md
- Korean paper example:
장혜림_2013_읽기가이드.md - English paper example:
Berkowitz_1989_읽기가이드.md
Save Location: Obsidian vault의 Guides/ folder
- The vault path follows the user's workspace folder
- If the Guides folder does not exist, create it automatically
Phase 5: Worksheet Review (when the user returns)
When the user returns after filling out the worksheet:
- Confirm the parts that are correct
?Explain the parts left as- Point out missed points
- Discuss the user's "My thoughts"
- If necessary, call the survey-paper skill to generate the final survey note

Quality Checklist
Self-verification after generation (all must be ✅ to be complete):
- Are there 3~7 Zotero tags, are they in Korean, and are the reasons specified?
- Is "What is this paper trying to do?" understandable without technical terms?
- Does the paper structure preview include all major sections?
- Is the most important section highlighted with a ⭐ mark?
- Is the "in plain words" column of the glossary actually easy?
- Do the worksheet questions point to specific pages/sections of the paper?
- Are the last two questions of the worksheet ("My thoughts", "Parts I don't understand") included?
- Is the entire guide a volume that can be read within 5 minutes?
- Has it been saved in the Guides folder with the correct filename?
⚠️ If the checklist is not met: Re-verify after fixing the relevant part
