About this skill

Volume Webhooks

Volume is a UK open banking (pay-by-bank) payments provider (API host volumepay.io). When a payment reaches a final status, Volume sends an HTTP PUT webhook to the URL in your application configuration. Each webhook is signed with Volume's RSA private key. You verify it with Volume's public key. There is no shared secret, so an HMAC check is always wrong here.

When to Use This Skill

  • How do I receive Volume payment webhooks?
  • How do I verify the Volume Authorization: SHA256withRSA ... header?
  • Where do I get Volume's webhook public key (sandbox vs live)?
  • How do I handle COMPLETED, SETTLED and FAILED payment webhooks?
  • Why is my Volume webhook signature verification failing?

Verification (core)

Header Authorization: SHA256withRSA <signature>
Algorithm RSA PKCS#1 v1.5 + SHA-256 (Java SHA256withRSA), not PSS
Signature encoding Standard base64 (not base64url, not hex)
Signed content The raw request body bytes. No timestamp, no nonce
Public key https://api.sandbox.volumepay.io/.well-known/signature/pem (sandbox)https://api.volumepay.io/.well-known/signature/pem (live)

The key URL returns a bare base64 SPKI body without the -----BEGIN/END PUBLIC KEY----- lines. Decode it as DER, or wrap it in PEM armour.

const crypto = require('crypto');

// pemBody: text from the .well-known/signature/pem URL (cache it, ~1 hour)
function verifyVolume(rawBody, authorization, pemBody) {
  const key = crypto.createPublicKey({
    key: Buffer.from(pemBody.trim(), 'base64'), format: 'der', type: 'spki',
  });
  const [scheme, signature] = (authorization || '').trim().split(/\s+/);
  if (scheme !== 'SHA256withRSA' || !/^[A-Za-z0-9+/]+={0,2}$/.test(signature || '')) {
    return false;
  }
  // RSA PKCS#1 v1.5 is Node's default padding for RSA keys
  return crypto.verify('sha256', rawBody, key, Buffer.from(signature, 'base64'));
}

Python: public_key.verify(sig, raw_body, padding.PKCS1v15(), hashes.SHA256()).

For complete handlers with tests, see examples/express/, examples/nextjs/, examples/fastapi/.

The examples also cache the key, fail closed (503) when it can't be fetched, dedupe retries, and reconcile the payload against your own payment record. Their tests include Volume's two published, sandbox-signed test calls.

Webhook Events (paymentStatus)

Volume sends no event-type header and no event name. The body field paymentStatus tells you what happened, and Volume sends it only for these final statuses:

paymentStatus Meaning Use it to
COMPLETED Payment succeeded Fulfil the order and notify the customer
SETTLED Funds settled. Virtual accounts only Internal/operational reconciliation, not customer messaging
FAILED Payment rejected. See errorDescription Mark the order failed, let the customer retry

The same payment can produce COMPLETED and later SETTLED, so dedupe on paymentId + paymentStatus.

Handler Rules

  1. Verify the raw bytes first, then JSON.parse. Volume's docs warn that DTO mapping or re-serialisation (e.g. enums) changes the bytes and breaks verification.
  2. Route must accept PUT. Accepting POST too is harmless.
  3. Respond 200 quickly. Volume resends until it gets a 200.
  4. Be idempotent. Retries and duplicates happen.
  5. Reconcile. Check paymentRequest.amount (major units: 24.23 is £24.23, not pence), currency and merchantPaymentId against the payment you created. On a mismatch, stop processing.
  6. Ignore unknown properties. The sample payload includes confirmationOfPayer, which the field table does not list.

Environment Variables

VOLUME_ENV=sandbox # or "live": picks the public key URL
# VOLUME_PEM_URL=https://...       # optional: explicit key URL
# VOLUME_PUBLIC_KEY=MIIBIjAN... # optional: literal key (no fetch). Use in tests

The sandbox and live keys are different. A sandbox-signed webhook will not verify against the live key.

Local Development

# Start tunnel (no account needed)
npx hookdeck-cli listen 3000 volume --path /webhooks/volume
