The Authoritative Guide to ASO Growth and App Cold Start

🌍 Language / 语言: Chinese | English

Chinese Version

Compiled from: Instructor Wang Hengjia's ASO study meeting notes (March 2026) Supplementary materials: Public industry research and best practices

Core Framework

This guide covers the complete cycle of App growth:

Module Core Content
ASO Fundamentals Store page optimization, keyword research, rating optimization, ranking rules
Cold Start Strategy Organic First principle, channel matrix, App vs Web differences
UGC Operations Creator sourcing and screening, pricing and incentives, management structure
Multi-Platform Content TikTok/Instagram/YouTube Shorts differences and strategies
AI-Assisted Content Creation AI video production, account health maintenance, multi-version testing strategy (must comply with app store policies)
Platform Comparison App Store vs Google Play algorithm rule differences

Core ASO Tools

Tool Pricing Features
Astro ~$80-90/year User-friendly interface, suitable for independent developers
Diandian Data On demand Domestic tool, global data, powerful features
AppTweak On demand AI-powered insights, professional-grade
AppFollow On demand Review management + keyword research

Establish an Evidence Baseline First

Before executing any ASO revamp, export the last 28 days of data by country/region and traffic source: impressions, product page views, first-time downloads, conversion rate, revenue, and D1/D7/D30 retention. Establish a change log recording store versions, release dates, keyword rankings, creative versions, and concurrent paid campaigns.

An effective ASO review must answer at least four questions:

  1. Did keyword rankings or search impressions change?
  2. Did the impressions → product page view rate change?
  3. Did the product page view → first-time download rate change?
  4. Did D7/D30 retention, rating quality, or revenue deteriorate?

Seeing downloads rise alone cannot be attributed to ASO; you must also rule out paid campaigns, being featured, version releases, and seasonality. The current Gingiris asset library does not yet contain an App Store before-and-after case with the complete metrics described above, so this skill provides an execution framework and does not promise a fixed improvement range.

Supplementary Notes from the Original Apple Notes Study Record

The "ASO Study 0307" from 2026-03-07 supports the following execution order: start from user search intent, compare search demand, difficulty, competitor coverage, and regional differences; only after sufficient traffic, run A/B tests on store creatives; for cold start, the founder first personally validates the Organic Winning Format, then hands it to UGC creators to replicate, and finally scales the validated creatives.

The original notes are a study record, not a controlled growth experiment. For complete evidence and compliance boundaries, see references/apple-notes-field-evidence.md。

Compliance Red Lines

  • Do not purchase ratings, reviews, search volume, downloads, or chart positions;
  • Do not use device farms, bulk accounts, or network spoofing to evade platform review;
  • Do not use shell apps to bypass takedowns or enforcement;
  • Request ratings only from real users, without filtering or incentivizing positive reviews;
  • Use official PPO / Store Listing Experiments and transparent ad delivery for testing.

Core principle of cold start: Organic First

Step 1: The founder gets hands-on personally

  • Run your own social media accounts
  • Personally test various content formats
  • Find the "Winning Format" that consistently produces viral hits

Step 2: Replicate the successful template

  • Hand the Winning Format to UGC creators
  • Build a management process (contracts, payments, data dashboards)

Step 3: Scale with paid ad spend

  • Use the best-performing organic content as ad creatives
  • Meta ads (Facebook + Instagram) are the first choice

Comparison of three major short-video platforms

Platform User age Paid conversion rate Core metrics
TikTok 13-18 years old Lowest Completion rate, share rate
Instagram 18-25 years old Medium Share Rate、Like Rate
YouTube Shorts 25-35 years old Highest First 3-second retention rate, completion rate

UGC pricing reference

Base pricing: $10-20 per asset

Incentive plan example:

  • Base fee: $20
  • 10,000 views: +$20
  • 100,000 views: +$50
  • 1,000,000 views: +$200

Key differences between App Store vs Google Play

Dimension App Store Google Play
Core algorithm Precise metadata matching Text content understanding + technical performance
Keyword strategy Concise, weight-first Comprehensive, density-first
Role of the description Does not affect search ranking The long description is key
Technical metrics Indirect impact Android Vitals directly affect ranking
