Used for diagnosing runtime issues in Roblox games. First establish a reproducible path, then locate the Server/Client boundary and data flow.
Diagnostic Order
- Reproduce the issue:
- Clarify whether it is Play Solo, Start Server + Players, a live server, or a specific device.
- Collect Output errors, stack traces, trigger steps, player count, and network conditions.
- Narrow the boundary:
- Determine whether the issue occurs in Server, Client, Replication, Physics, UI, DataStore, or an external service.
- Find the corresponding Script, LocalScript, ModuleScript, and Remote.
- Trace the data flow:
- Input sources: player input, touch, ProximityPrompt, UI buttons, Remote.
- State storage: Attribute, ValueObject, CollectionService Tag, Module cache, DataStore.
- Output results: UI, character state, physics objects, network replication, save data.
- Add minimal instrumentation:
- Print key Remote parameters, player UserId, Instance path, and state version number.
- Add sampling or toggles for high-frequency events to avoid flooding Output.
- Temporary logs should be easy to remove.
- Regression after fixing:
- Cover at least the relevant items in single-player, multiplayer, respawn, leave and rejoin, server shutdown, low frame rate, or high latency scenarios.
Common Locating Points
- UI not updating: Check whether the LocalScript is running, whether events are connected, and whether the Remote reaches the client.
- Server not responding: Check the Remote location, parameter types, permission validation, and the service where the server script resides.
- Multiplayer desync: Check whether state exists only on the client, or whether the Instance is not in a replicable container.
- Physics anomalies: Check NetworkOwnership, Anchored, CollisionGroup, Massless, and constraints.
- Performance degradation: Check
Heartbeat/RenderStepped, infinite loops, too many Instances, frequent pathfinding. - Save data loss: Check DataStore throttling, pcall, BindToClose, save on player leave, and session lock.
Output Format
- Reproduction path: How to trigger the issue.
- Boundary determination:Server/Client/Replication/DataStore/UI/Physics。
- Root cause: Explain with the code path, not just guesses.
- Fix: Minimal change and risk.
- Verification: Actual check items; if Studio cannot run, explain the static verification limitations.
