Client Intake
Purpose
Intake is one of the biggest bottlenecks in legal clinics. A student may spend 45 minutes interviewing, then another hour writing up notes, then still have to spot the legal issues. Meanwhile the waitlist grows.
This skill structures the conversation, generates notes, spots cross-practice issues, and flags conflicts — so the student's energy goes to analysis, not transcription.
What it does not do: Decide whether to accept a case. That is the student's analysis and the supervising attorney's judgment. Claude accelerates information gathering and structuring, not substantive representation.

Read the Supervising Attorney Guide
Check whether ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal-zh/legal-clinic/guides/<实践领域>.md has a practice area guide. If it exists, use its intake questions, red flags, and eligibility criteria in place of the generic defaults below. If it does not exist, use the generic intake and note at the end of the case summary: "This is a generic intake — your supervising attorney can use /legal-clinic:build-guide to customize questions for your clinic type."
When intake begins before the practice area has been routed (workflow step 1), re-check the guide after routing — the guide path depends on which practice area the intake lands in.
Workflow
Step 1: Practice Area Routing
Which practice area does this intake begin in? The client may not know — they know their problem, but not the legal classification.
"Tell me what happened — what brings you to the clinic today?"
Based on the answer, route to the appropriate intake template. If the clinic handles multiple areas and the problem spans areas (a housing client mentions immigration status, a family law client mentions domestic violence), record all relevant areas — cross-practice issue spotting is a feature, not a defect.
Step 2: Practice Area-Specific Intake
Each practice area asks different questions. Use the template for that area in ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal-zh/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.md . If none is provided, default as follows:
Labor disputes:
- Employer, position, start date, whether a labor contract was signed
- Dispute type: unpaid wages, unlawful termination, work injury, social insurance
- Whether labor arbitration has been through (a prerequisite procedure)
- Key evidence: labor contract, pay stubs, termination notice, attendance records
- Statute of limitations urgency: arbitration application period (one year, counted from the date the right was known to be infringed)
Marriage and family:
- Relationship and focus of dispute (divorce, child custody, property division, domestic violence)
- Children involved — ages, current custody arrangement
- Safety: any violence, threats, fear (handle with caution—see cross-cutting flags)
- Existing court rulings/judgments
- Urgency of time limits: whether any court hearings are already scheduled
Consumer rights:
- Type of dispute and amount involved
- Records of communication with the merchant
- Documents: contract, payment receipts, communication records
- Whether there are already related complaints or lawsuits
- Urgency of time limits: statute of limitations (three years, counted from the date the right is known to have been harmed, Article 188 of the Civil Code)
Administrative disputes:
- Name of the administrative organ, type of administrative act
- Whether administrative reconsideration has been undergone
- Key documents: administrative decision, notice
- Urgency of time limits: time limit for applying for administrative reconsideration (60 days) or time limit for filing an administrative lawsuit (6 months)
Step 3: Cross-practice-area issue identification
While running the practice-area template, pay attention to issues outside the area:
| The party says | Also involves |
|---|---|
| "I am worried about my status issue" | Administrative legal issue—even during a labor dispute intake |
| "My spouse [threatening behavior]" | Domestic violence/marriage and family/personal protection order—even during a consumer intake |
| "I cannot work because of an injury" | Possible work-related injury/social insurance/tort issue |
| "They deducted money from my wages" | Wage dispute—labor/administrative intersection |
| "The boss said he would report me" | Labor + possible criminal/administrative reporting issue |
Record each cross-area issue in the summary. The clinic may accept, refer, or handle both—this is the supervising teacher's decision. Students should see it.
Step 4: Conflict of interest check flag
Follow the conflict check process described in ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal-zh/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.md . Refer to Articles 11, 39, and 41 of the Lawyers Law and Articles 26-28 of the Measures for the Administration of Lawyers' Practice. At a minimum include:
- Name of the opposing party—has the clinic represented them or previously represented them?
- Related parties—could the student or clinic possibly have a conflict with anyone else?
- Positional conflict—does this case harm the interests of another client of the clinic?
Flag for review by the supervising teacher. Do not resolve the conflict—present the conflict.
Step 5: Triage classification
Not an acceptance decision—it is triage input:
| Classification | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Urgent | Deadline within a few days, safety issue, irreversible harm imminent |
| Time-sensitive | Deadline within a few weeks, harm ongoing but not immediately irreversible |
| Standard | No immediate deadline, can be handled on a normal schedule |
| Possibly out of scope | Issue is outside the clinic's practice area—flag for referral assessment |
Step 6: Supervisory flag check
Follow the supervisory style and flag trigger conditions in ~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal-zh/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.md . If a formal review queue or configurable flags are enabled, and trigger conditions exist (mention of a deadline, domestic violence indicators, immigration status issues, etc.), note the flag.
Step 7: Deadline handover—required deliverable
If any limitation deadline emerges during intake (answer period, hearing date, statute of limitations deadline, administrative reconsideration application period, etc.),output a directly copy-pasteable /legal-clinic:deadlines --add ... block as part of the intake output. This is a required deliverable, not a suggestion—intake identifies the deadline, and the student should not re-transcribe it into the deadline skill.
Format each deadline as one code block:
/legal-clinic:deadlines --add
case=[案件简称或当事人姓氏关键词]
type=[答辩|庭审|诉讼时效|举证期限|行政复议|申请执行|其他]
description="[一行描述应完成事项]"
due=[需核实——学生+指导老师从触发事件起算]
source="[触发事件 + 法条引用,如'起诉状送达日期2026-05-04,《民事诉讼法》第128条']"
owner=[学生姓名]
warnings=[14,7,3,1]
Rules:
- One block per deadline that emerges. Do not merge.
- When the deadline is statutory (answer period, statute of limitations, statutory application window),
due=leave the value as[需核实——学生+指导老师计算]. The deadline skill does not compute it for you; the student + supervising attorney do the math and update the entry. - When a date is given in the triggering document (hearing date on the summons, date on the administrative reconsideration notice), put that date into
due=. When the date is derived (N days from the triggering event), leave the[需核实]marker. - If no deadline emerges during intake, omit this section—do not invent one.

Practice Area Intake Template Reference
Store practice-area-specific question sets in references/intake-templates/[领域].md. If the supervising attorney has not provided one, use the default template above.
What This Skill Does Not Do
- Decide case acceptance. The student analyzes, the supervising attorney decides.
- Resolve conflicts of interest. Flag for supervising attorney review.
- Give advice during intake. Intake is information gathering; advice comes after analysis and supervising attorney review.
- Produce a final document. The summary is a starting point—the student reads it, corrects anything misstated, and builds the analysis from it.
