Windows File Explorer Manual
Applies to: Windows 11 | Updated: 2026-03-14
1. Core Principles
- Prioritize keyboard shortcuts to reduce ineffective clicks
- When the path is known, go directly via the address bar instead of expanding level by level
- Before searching, first enter the most likely target directory
- For batch operations, prioritize multi-select + standard shortcuts
- Switch views only when the task requires it
2. Main Usage Workflows
The following workflows cover most actual usage scenarios of this app.
Main Workflow A: Directory Navigation
- Double-click a folder in the main content area to enter the next directory level
- Click the parent directory name in the address bar breadcrumb to jump directly back to that level
- Click a node in the left navigation pane (Downloads, C:, etc.) to switch across drives or locations
Main Workflow B: Precise Search
- First navigate to the most likely target directory
- Click the search box (or press
Ctrl+E / F3 to focus)
- Enter keywords to filter in the current directory and subdirectories
- Double-click a result item to open it
Main Workflow C: Jump to Historical Paths
- Click the address bar drop-down entry (or press
F4 to expand the history list)
- Click a target path in the history list to jump directly
Main Workflow D: Batch File Operations
- Use
Shift+单击 to select all files in a continuous range, or Ctrl+单击 to select non-adjacent files one by one, or Ctrl+A to select all
- Perform the target operation:
Ctrl+C copy / Ctrl+X cut / Ctrl+V paste / Delete delete to Recycle Bin / Shift+Delete permanently delete / F2 rename
Main Workflow E: Switch Views
- Click the view switch icon in the lower right corner, or press
Ctrl+滚轮 to zoom file icons
- Details view = show date / type / size; Large icons view = show thumbnail previews
3. Stable Rules
3.1 Routes / Pages / Modules
- Left navigation pane: quickly jump to fixed locations (Downloads, Desktop, disk root directories, etc.)
- Main content area: the main area for displaying the current directory contents and interacting with files
- Address bar: toggles between breadcrumb mode (clickable to jump levels) and plain text mode (can directly enter a path)
- Search box: scope is the current directory and all its subdirectories
- Tabs: supports multiple tabs,
Ctrl+T to create new,Ctrl+W to close,Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab to switch
3.2 Parameters / States / Business Semantics
- When the address bar is in breadcrumb mode, clicking a blank area switches it to an editable plain text path
Alt+D focuses the address bar and selects the path, suitable for directly typing a new path to jump
- Single-click a file/folder = select (status bar displays information); double-click = open/enter
Delete deletes to Recycle Bin (recoverable);Shift+Delete permanently deletes (not recoverable)
- When closing the last tab,
Ctrl+W is equivalent to closing the entire window
3.3 Criteria for Judgment
- Direct pass (keyboard shortcut path): known target path →
Alt+D enter the path to go directly; need to search → Ctrl+E then enter keywords
- Conditional pass (click path): when the path is uncertain, locate layer by layer via the left navigation or breadcrumbs
- Skip directly: when no view switch is needed, do not operate the view control in the lower-right corner
4. UI / Coordinates / Page Mapping
4.1 Page Areas
- Left navigation pane: tree structure; clicking a node jumps directly to the target location
- Top address bar: dual-state breadcrumb mode / editable plain-text path mode; includes a drop-down history entry
- Top search box: located to the right of the address bar; scope is the current directory and subdirectories
- Main content area: list of files and folders in the current directory; supports multiple views
- View switching area in the lower-right corner: click an icon to switch the file display method (details / large icons, etc.)
- Bottom status bar: displays information such as the number of selected items and file size

6. Common Failures and Troubleshooting
Symptom: Search results are inaccurate or miss the target file
- Possible causes:
- The search scope is the current directory, and the target file is not under the current directory tree
- The keyword is misspelled
- Check first:
- Whether the current directory is the most likely parent directory of the target file
- Whether the search keyword is correct
- How to handle:
- First navigate to a directory closer to the target, then run the search again
Symptom: The address bar cannot accept a path / still shows breadcrumbs
- Possible causes:
- The blank area of the address bar was not clicked, so the address bar has not switched to an editable state
- Check first:
- Whether the blank area of the address bar has been clicked (or press
Alt+D)
- How to handle:
- Use
Alt+D Force focus and select the address bar, then enter the path
Symptom:Ctrl+W Accidentally closes the entire window
- Possible causes:
- Only the last tab remains, so closing the tab is equivalent to closing the window
- Check first:
- Confirm the number of tabs before the operation
- Handling method:
- Press
Win+E again to open a new window, then navigate to the target path
7. Self-Improving
When the following situations occur during execution, additional records need to be appended to references/self-improving.md:
- The original process cannot cover actual high-frequency usage paths
- A new failure mode was confirmed during troubleshooting
- A more stable and efficient execution method was discovered
- New facts worth preserving were discovered
Execution requirements:
- Directly modifying the body content of this
SKILL.md is prohibited
- Only appending new content to
references/self-improving.md
- Append only, do not overwrite, do not delete historical records
- Only record observed facts here, do not record inferences, do not record guesses
For the writing format, strictly use references/self-improving-template.md the template provided in it.
