Journal positioning
Sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, it is the leading comprehensive, interdisciplinary social-science journal. It is not an "economics journal" or a "management journal" — economics, sociology, political science, law, history, and philosophy all coexist in one journal. The measure is intellectual weight, not methodological complexity. A technically refined empirical article with a trivial question is almost certainly out of range.
When to trigger
- Want to aim for the highest domestic social-science platform, and need to first judge whether it is "qualified enough"
- Have big data / good identification on hand, but cannot articulate a "big question"
- The article's disciplinary affiliation is ambiguous, and you want to know which disciplinary narrative to lean toward
- The whole piece is "estimated coefficients + robustness," lacking theoretical propositions
Topic preferences (by priority)
- Major theoretical and real-world issues: able to engage in dialogue at the level of national development, civilization, institutions, and governance
- Original theoretical contribution: propose concepts, propositions, or analytical frameworks, rather than verifying existing conclusions
- China's independent knowledge system: distill general theory from Chinese experience, and respond to "the question of China / the question of the times"
- Interdisciplinarity: standard technical work within a single discipline is inferior to an interdisciplinary narrative with theoretical depth
Golden sentence pattern: This article not only answers "whether X affects Y," but also answers "what general mechanism the phenomenon of X→Y reveals / which existing theoretical judgment it revises."
Attitude toward methods: methods serve the thesis
- Empirical, speculative, normative, historical comparative —methods are pluralistic, with no preference for any one
- Quantification is only one kind of evidence, and cannot replace theoretical argumentation; a purely regression-based article needs to supplement the level of theoretical propositions
- If advanced methods are used, they must be translated into "what intellectual problem does this help us see more clearly," otherwise it is mere showing off
- The rigor of concept definition and logical deduction carries no less weight than empirical identification
Structure and writing
- The introduction first establishes "the importance of the question and the focus of debate," then establishes this article's proposition, and only at the end discusses data/methods
- The whole text unfolds around thecore proposition, with each section answering "how this step supports the proposition"
- Style: macro vision + scholarly restraint, avoid sloganizing, avoid the tone of a policy report
- Literature dialogue must touch ontheoretical origins(classic authors and schools), and cannot merely pile up empirical work from the past five years
- Length is usually long (more than 20,000 characters is common), with a complete structure and standardized notes (footnote/bottom-of-page note style)
Routing to prevent mis-submission
- This journal is quickly positioned as belonging to the "comprehensive social science" channel; only when the manuscript's core contribution satisfies "social-science theoretical propositions, social structure, or original interdisciplinary explanation must be the core contribution" should Social Sciences in China be taken as the first choice.
- For similar profiles, first compare:
securities-market-herald(Securities Market Herald) /shanghai-journal-of-economics(Shanghai Journal of Economics) /social-security-studies(Social Security Review) /sociological-studies(Sociological Studies). If the readership of these journals is a closer fit, do not force a submission to this journal merely because of similar names, regions, or variables. - Common mis-submission: if it is merely an empirical application in economics and management, return to the corresponding economics and management specialty journal. Before formal advice, it is still necessary to go through the official verification checklist.
Official Verification Checklist
- Before formally giving submission format/process advice, first read
../../resources/source-basis.mdand../../resources/official-source-map.md, start verification from the official source anchors therein or from the entry point of the same host/publishing system, and state the verification date in the answer. - Search for "Social Sciences in China submission guidelines / call for papers / author guidelines", and take the official website, host institution page, editorial system, or the journal's official CNKI page as authoritative
- Check whether anonymous main text, author information page, separate listing of funding information, abstract/keywords/JEL or Chinese Library Classification number, and figure/table/reference formatting are required
- Check whether there are requirements for data, code, supplementary materials, copyright agreement, no-fee statement, or special columns
- If this skill conflicts with the latest official requirements, the official requirements shall prevail
Pre-submission Self-check
- Can state in one sentence "the original theoretical proposition of this article", rather than "the empirical findings of this article"
- The importance of the question stands at the national/civilizational/institutional/governance level, not some niche market
- There is substantive dialogue with classical theoretical schools, not a literature listing
- The method has been translated into intellectual discoveries, and does not stop at coefficient tables
- No policy-report tone (the four-piece set of "strengthen, improve, advance, promote" appears 0 times)
- The format conforms to the journal's footnote/reference standards
High-frequency mismatch signals (≈ desk reject)
- The topic is "an evaluation of a certain policy's effect on a certain outcome", without rising to a theoretical proposition
- The entire piece is a technical display, and the theoretical contribution is only a paragraph of boilerplate at the end
- The disciplinary narrative wavers, resembling neither economics nor sociology, and no one claims it
- Treating "new data/new method" as the contribution itself
Decision Mnemonics
- "I have findings but no proposition" → first fill in the theoretical proposition layer, otherwise do not submit
- "I can explain a big question but the evidence is weak" → still closer to the target than "strong evidence but no question"
- "This is actually a good empirical industrial economics paper" → submit instead to China Industrial Economics or Economic Research Journal
- "This is actually quantitative sociology" → you can still aim for this journal, but you must fully develop the sociological theoretical dialogue, otherwise fall back to Sociological Studies
