Journal positioning
Sponsored by the Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, domesticinternational economics/open macrofirst-tier journal. The core marker isinternational perspective: trade, investment, finance, exchange rates, global value chains, openness and growth. A purely domestic article unrelated to "openness/external" factors, even if well done, is considered out of scope.
When to trigger
- The topic involves trade, tariffs, FDI, exchange rates, cross-border capital, GVCs, or global shocks
- Use China's opening-up policies (WTO accession, free trade zones, Belt and Road, foreign investment access) as quasi-experiments
- The article has an international dimension but is written as a "domestic policy evaluation," so the positioning is off
- Want to judge whether to submit to 《世界经济》 or 《金融研究》/《中国工业经济》
Topic preferences
- Causal questions in an open economy: how external shocks/policies transmit through trade, investment, and financial channels
- International comparison and global vision: cross-country data, multi-country panels, global value chain decomposition
- Interaction between China and the world: the two-way impact of China's opening-up process on domestic and foreign actors
- Chinese tests or extensions of international economic theory
Methods and data
- Mainstream: trade/customs microdata (e.g., firm-product-destination country), cross-country macro panels, input-output/GVC decomposition (e.g., KWW, ADB MRIO)
- Quasi-experimental identification is also valued: tariff shocks, trade agreements, exchange rate reform, and foreign investment negative list adjustments as exogenous variation
- Gravity models, event-study, shift-share (Bartik) instrumental variables are common—note the modern critiques of shift-share inference
- For macro-finance topics, VAR/local projections can be used to characterize shock transmission
Structure and writing
- The introduction should put the "international/open" dimension first, so reviewers can see at a glance that it fits the journal
- Mechanisms must be clearly explainedtransmission channels(trade channel, financial channel, expectation channel, ...)
- Engage with classic and frontier international trade/international finance literature (do not cite only domestic literature)
- Policy implications should lean toward theopening-up policylevel (trade, exchange rates, capital account, industrial opening)
Routing to prevent mis-submission
- This journal is quickly positioned as belonging to the "open economy and international issues" channel; only when the manuscript's core contribution satisfies "open economy, international trade, GVCs, exchange rates, FDI, or cross-country comparison must be the main contribution" should 《世界经济》 be the first choice.

If these journals' readership is closer, do not force submission to this journal merely because of similar names, regions, or variables. - Common mis-submission: if it is only domestic policy evaluation, prioritize returning to general economics or industrial economics journals. Before formal advice, still enter the official verification checklist.
Official verification checklist
- Before formally giving submission format/process suggestions, first read
../../resources/source-basis.mdand../../resources/official-source-map.md, verify starting from the official source anchors therein or the entry point of the same organizing/publishing system, and state the verification date in the answer. - Search for "The Journal of World Economy submission guidelines / call for papers / author guidelines", and rely on the official website, organizer page, editorial system, or the journal's official CNKI page
- Check whether anonymized main text, author information page, separate funding information sheet, abstract/keywords/JEL or Chinese Library Classification number, and figure/table/reference formatting are required
- Check whether there are requirements for data, code, supplementary materials, copyright agreement, no-fee statement, or special columns
- If this skill conflicts with the latest official requirements, the official requirements shall prevail
Pre-submission self-check
- The "international/open" dimension is established in the early part of the introduction, not tacked on as a label
- Transmission channels are clear (via trade/investment/finance/expectations)
- Data match international economic research (customs/cross-country panel/GVC)
- The identification and inference of shift-share / gravity models hold up
- The literature includes classics and frontiers in international trade/finance
- Policy implications fall at the level of open-economy policy
High-frequency rejection minefields
- The topic is actually a domestic issue, with "international" being just one sentence in the introduction
- GVC terminology is used but no decomposition is done, only narrative
- The shift-share IV does not discuss exogeneity of exposure/inference
- Only domestic literature is cited, lacking international dialogue
- The mechanism stops at "promoted exports" without clarifying the channel
Decision mnemonic
- "External shocks/open policy + transmission channels" → fits The Journal of World Economy
- "Landing point in banking/monetary policy/capital markets" → more suitable for Journal of Financial Research
- "Landing point in domestic industry/firm behavior" → more suitable for China Industrial Economics
- "Pure growth theory with cross-country comparison" → can aim for this journal, but needs empirical support
